I arrived in this beautiful Spanish island at the start of September, full of enthusiasm and eager to start work as an English teacher. I sorted all the necessary paperwork out and moved into a flat of my own within the first couple of days. Great! Or so I thought. At 4 am and at several intervals after that, I was rudely awoken by the cock that lives opposite me. Fantastic! I now have 5 extra alarms every morning.
In the following weeks, I also started to notice a trend. Things in my flat started to break at the rate of one object per day, like the hot water, bowls, cups, shower, doors or glass shelves. Yes, I am clumsy but things just fell apart. If it wasn抰 broken, it would either be dirty or missing. Using my washing basket for the first time was pretty disgusting. When I took out my clothes, they were swiftly followed by a hundred or so bugs that were living in the bottom.
As for the general lack of equipment in the house, there was no oven, tin opener, sharp knives or potato peeler. It turns out making a burger from scratch wasn抰 the best idea. I have a small microwave and a grill. I thought the general understanding was never to put metal in a microwave but I went with it. Smoke soon started to appear. I was not quite sure if it was the burger or the grill but as soon as I opened the door, the electricity cut out. I spent the following 10 minutes in a dark, smoky room hunting for the power switch using the light from my mobile phone, which broke the week after and left me without a connection to the outer world.
Luckily, I抦 now borrowing a phone and my luck has returned. No more things have broken (probably because there is nothing left to break). I’ve also realized that even if a flat looks pretty, it doesn’t mean its contents work. I am also learning how to adapt to life with limited, broken utensils (厨房用具).
24. What problem did the author have in the morning?
A. She got some noisy neighbors. B. Her sleep was disturbed by a rooster.
C. She often slept late. D. Her alarm failed to work.

A. Her household articles were in poor condition. B. Her flat was pretty old but comfortable.

26. What happened when the author was making a burger?
A. She broke her phone accidentally. B. She suffered a sudden power failure.
C. She was seriously injured. D. She made a terrible mistake.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Learning to live in a new flat. B. Why living abroad is not easy.
C. Remaining optimistic. D. How to choose a nice flat.

Binge-watching (刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession (一连串, 连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, 揵inge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we抣l be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: 揟he days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move. If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what抯 the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, 揂 little of what you fancy does you good.
28. How did the writer develop the first paragraph?
A. By giving a definition. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing some examples. D. By analyzing the cause and effect.
29. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word 揷oncurrently in para. 2?
A. for convenience. B. at the same time.

30. What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ________.
A. people can抰 control their feelings B. people can抰 resist the temptation
C. people have no patience to do work D. people are addicted to waiting for a new episode
31. What advice did the writer give at last?
A. To keep online media from stopping functioning.
B. To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.

In an apartment, people are having a party. They抮e smiling and chatting with each other; they抮e drinking cocktails and enjoying snacks. But the mood lighting is a bit strange. No candles or twinkling Christmas lights here. Instead, the light comes from enormous green-glowing plants in the center of the table.
This is a model inside a museum in New York. The “people” are small silver statues. But the plants are real. They’re watercress planted with nanoparticles (纳米粒) that turn their stored energy into light. It’s a technology developed several years ago by MIT chemical engineer Michael Strano. Now, Strano has partnered with an architect, Sheila Kennedy, to explore how these plants might be a central part of our homes and sustainable energy future.
The plants in the exhibit are newer versions. Their glow is based on an enzyme (酶) called luciferase, which is what gives fireflies their light. Strano and his colleagues first put luciferase and two molecules (分子) that allow it to work inside a nanoparticle carrier. They then immersed plants in a liquid containing the particles, and added high pressure. The pressure pushed the particles into the leaves through tiny pores (气孔).
“For the last two decades, plants have been a part of architecture, but they’ve always been used as green walls or roofs,” Kennedy says. However, the plants in Kennedy抯 models fill entire rooms, their leaves and stems going wherever they choose. For her, this project was an interesting design challenge. She and her team had to figure out how to bring in sufficient water and where to contain enormous amounts of soil.
The team is currently working on making the plants brighter and fixing light particles in larger plants such as trees. They抮e also eager to extend the duration of a plant抯 light from hours to days or weeks.
32. What is special about the apartment according to the first two paragraphs?
A. Plants provide mood lighting for it. B. It is powered by nanoparticles.
C. Real people are enjoying themselves in it. D. It is modeled after a real one.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. What the model is like. B. What gives fireflies light.
C. How the nanoparticles work. D. How to make the plants glow.
34. What actually makes the plants produce light?
A. Luciferase. B. Fireflies. C. Molecules. D. Pressure.
35. What can we know about the plants in Kennedy’s models?
A. The plants grow in restricted space. B. The plants have grown as large as trees.
C The plants still need water and soil. D. The light of the plants can last weeks.

Boys and girls,
Good morning, everyone! I'm Li Hua. It's my great honour to be here and deliver my speech. The topic of my speech is "Being Grateful to Our Parents".
First and foremost, there is no denying that it is our parents who give us lives, spare no effort to look after us and bring us up. In addition, in order to make us live better, so diligent are they that they keep on working all day long. Most importantly, when we get into trouble and are in desperate need of help, they will always support us and encourage us with constant care and love.
So it is high time that we should show our gratitude to them and put it into action. Wish they could always be happy and healthy! Many thanks for your attention.
