I wanted someone to understand me. I started to imagine this friend. Often I imagine our conversations and what we would do, but I didn't give my imagination a face.
Some weeks later I started a new project in school and I was working with one of my schoolmates. We had never worked together before but we got along well. After the project we started to spend some time together in school. One day we decided to take a walk. Ever since that walk we've been friends. We listened and really understood each other.
I had wished for a best friend, but the universe gave me so much more. I have met one of my soul mates(挚友). We can sense each other, and it just takes one look and we know what the other is thinking. I didn't think our friendship could grow much stronger. But now we have known each other for two years and our friendship is growing all the time.
It hasn't only been easy. We have gone through both easy and hard times. But I'm grateful for the hard times, because they have forced me to grow and taught me a lot. My best friend has changed me. She has made me believe in myself. And I am now focusing on achieving one of my biggest dreams. Without her, I wouldn't even have realized what my biggest dream is.

A Few Tips for Self?Acceptance
We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. Where do you start? Here's a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
__28__ Do not follow the people who make you feel not?good?enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own;you are the only you in this world.
__29__ We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. Remember, you are only human. You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate(有同情心的) response? “That didn't go as planned. But, I tried my best.”
__30__ Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strengths before weaknesses. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. __31__
__32__ Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don't feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. Feeling upset again?Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?
A. Nothing is too small to celebrate.
B. Now that you've listed your strengths, list your imperfections.
C. Others' encouragement can contribute to your self?acceptance.
D. Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made.
E. Without self?acceptance, you won’t have enough strengths to face the challenges in your life.

My best friend's mother was a social worker in Detroit, Michigan. Because of that, my friend Victoria and I were introduced early to the world of volunteering.
We did plenty of charity(慈善) work. We always had a good time, and continued to volunteer whenever we had time, often even when we didn't. It became second nature. Hairstyles came and went, but Victoria and I found places to donate our time because that's how we were raised.
One particular morning we signed up for “Paint the Town”, an organization in Detroit to help low?income homeowners clean their houses. We were assigned(分配) a dilapidated(破烂的) house in one of the worst communities of the city. I was afraid as we got near to the front door, not knowing who we would find on the other side. We knocked three times quickly and stepped back, waiting to be let in.
When the door opened, my mouth did, too. Standing there was a little old lady with wisps(一束) of white hair and a purple apron(围裙) tied around her waist.
“Hello,” she said, “I'm Amelia. Please come in and I will show you where to start.” Her smile shone brightly. “I am just baking some cookies for you girls to eat.”
As she led us to the parts of her house that needed painting, my heart softened. Here was one of the scariest?looking houses in the city, but behind its doors was a sweet old lady with a cane and a big smile.
Here we were coming to help her, and instead she was doing something for us—baking homemade cookies and serving us tea!

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Did you know that a drop of your blood can predict(预测) disease you may develop in the future? This is possible through genetic(基因的) testing. The most common type of genetic testing is called “newborn screening”, which is done to find treatable genetic disorders in newborn babies. In many countries, babies are screened in the hospital shortly after they are born. Although it is unusual to find that a baby has a genetic disorder, those that do have a disorder start receiving treatment right away.
Another type of genetic testing is called “predictive gene testing”. This is used to predict an adult’s risk of developing certain diseases later in life. There are many obvious advantages. A negative test can help people feel really relaxed. Jen Thomson, who recently underwent predictive gene testing for lung cancer, explains, “So many people in my family died of lung cancer, which has made me really worried. When the test came back negative, I felt as if someone had lifted a large weight off my shoulders.”
There are also some controversial(有争议的) downsides to genetic testing. Alzheimer's disease(老年痴呆症) runs in An Lee's family. Ann has decided to get genetic testing to see if she is likely to develop it. However, her husband Bao is not happy about her decision. Bao explains , “If the result is positive ,how will it help to know that she will probably develop the disease? If I had the Alzheimer's gene,I wouldn't want to know.”Another problem is that even if someone tests positively for a disease,it doesn't mean that they will surely develop the disease. So a person could spend years worrying about something that will never happen.
49. According to the passage, newborn screening is done ________.
A. to see if a baby is healthy B. to predict the baby’s growth
C. to treat any disorder in the baby D. to find out the baby's gene order
50. What was the problem with Jen Thomson?
A. She had developed lung cancer.
B. Something was wrong with her shoulders.
C. She was afraid of developing lung cancer.
D. All her family members died of lung cancer.
51. Which word can best describe Bao's feeling ?
A. Satisfied. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Happy.
52. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To give a description of Alzheimer's disease.
B. To encourage people to take genetic testing.
C. To tell people something about genetic testing.
D. To point out the problems of genetic testing.
D
Everyone can be angry. But if you take the time to actually examine your anger instead of just “feeling ”angry you'll have a better understanding of yourself. Knowing why you feel so angry can provide you with some surprising answers. These answers can enable you to grow spiritually and mentally.
I can give you a personal example. I went to a meeting once and I was verbally attacked(言语攻击) over an application I supported at my workplace. Various people went on and on about how terrible this system was and that it never worked. That didn't bother me that much. But I was absolutely furious at the comment,“Your job is pointless.”
I was upset that they would treat me that way. But once I took the time to think about what was really making me so mad, I learned a lot. I realized that the comment was more true than I wanted to admit. In the big scheme of things,my job was pointless. It wasn't what I really wanted to be doing with my life and this is what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn't even want to do. I was using it as crutch(依靠) because I didn't have the confidence in myself to take the scary(令人害怕的) road toward what I really wanted to do. As soon as I realized that, a lot of my anger just melted away. I also realized that I needed to start focusing on what I really wanted to do.
I now consider this incident as a great gift. It got me back on track to move in the direction I want to go with my life. I probably wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't taken the time to figure out why I was really so angry.
53. What does the underlined word “furious” probably mean?
A. Surprised. B. Relaxed.
C. Amazed. D. Angry.
54. Why did the author admit that his work was pointless ?
A. Because he didn't do his job wholeheartedly.
B. Because he didn't make enough money.
C. Because he couldn't get on well with his colleagues.
D. Because he didn't have the chance to realize his potential.
55. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author isn't easy to become angry any longer.
B. The author has achieved success in his present career.
C. The author received a lot of gifts after the incident.
D. The author was forced to quit his job.
56. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A magazine. D. A novel.

There was no age barrier that day as we worked on Amelia's house. Amelia stayed close by, talking to us as we painted, telling us about her native Ireland and how she came to Detroit. I felt so sad for her living in such a poor part of the neighborhood with no one to keep her company. When I told her so, she laughed at me.
“Nonsense!” she criticized( 批评). “This is my house even if it is falling down around me. I feel blessed that you girls came to help fix it up. I'm happy here. I've watched the neighborhood change, and seen people come and go, but I always stay. We may all be different on the outside, but on the inside, we are all just after the same thing—community. Keep it up. Nothing will make you happier than helping other people.”What she said to me replayed itself as I volunteered in different parts of the town.
49. A。根据第一段中的“The most common type of genetic testing is called ‘newborn screening’, which is done to find treatable genetic disorders in newborn babies.”得知,对新生儿的基因测试有助于找到可以治疗的基因病症,其中的disorder意为“混乱,病症”。

54. A。从第三段“I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn't even want to do.”可知,作者工作时不是全身心投入,所以反思之后他自己也承认自己的工作没有什么意义。
55. B。从最后一段“I probably wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't taken the time to figure out why I was really so angry.”

M: Hello, Andrea. This is Alex. I have some very good news for you. Miranda was very satisfied with you, and said she's very much looking forward to working with you. Isn't that wonderful? Congratulations, dear! How does it feel to be Miranda's new assistant? I imagine that you're just delighted with this news. So let's see, you can start on Monday, right?
W: Hmm, well, I don't think I can start Monday. I am visiting my father in Baltimore. And because I don't live in New York, I need a couple of days to find a flat, and buy some furniture, and move my things from Avon.
M: Oh, well, then in that case, I suppose Wednesday would be good. OK, see you then.

W: Hi, Joe, many people in our department are leaving for Thanksgiving. What are you going to do?
M: I think I'll just stay at home. I may see some friends and watch a few DVDs, and I probably would go to the Artwork car show. What about you, Ariel? What's your plan?
W: I am going to do some travelling with my family.
M: Oh, where are you going?
W: Toronto. And on our way, we are going to visit my aunt Betty in Kingston.
M: That's exciting. How long do you plan to stay?
W: Two days. I have a get?together party with my college friends on the 10th in Toronto. Oh, I'm afraid I've got to go now. My husband is waiting for me, and we'll have to pick up Daniel from school. Have a nice holiday, Joe.
M: Thank you, you too.

M: Well, I'd love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can't imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can't get around without one because there isn't any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don't have a car, you'd better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that's one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than feel safe but dull.
