Six people are talking about the newly-built garden on the roof of their building.
Jasmine: I loved the idea when Wilber first told me about it. We had lots of meetings with our
neighbors, trying to make them understand why it’s good to build a garden on the roof. Now
people love coming here, and we have made a lot of friends!
Wilber: The whole thing wasn’t easy at first. But Jasmine helped a lot. And she was really
good at making people happy to donate (捐赠 ) money for the roof garden.
2
David: My kids love going up there. They sit there watching butterflies and birds. The roof
garden brings them closer to nature.
Samuel: You want something green? Visit the park! It’s only one block away! After the roof
garden was built, small insects ,especially flies, started flying into my room! And the kids leave
mud on the stairs when they come down from the roof!
Rosie: Our building is now cooler in the summer. My baby sleeps well even on hot summer
days!
Flora: Guess where these tomatoes are from! Not from the supermarket. They’re from our
roof! It’s wonderful, isn’t?
21. Who dislikes the roof garden?
A. Jasmine B. Samuel C. Rosie D. Flora

Coffee is an important part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I
have drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a completely
different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a café or bar(酒吧 ), you are served with a tiny,
bitter espresso. This is “normal(正常的 ) coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the
huge coffees that we drink in the UK. If you want more than one sip(小口 ) of coffee in Italy,
lungo is a good choice. It is espresso with a little more water added, but still served in a small cup.
In addition, while takeaway coffee is quite popular among Brits, it is not very common at all in
Italy, especially in non?touristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while
standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Usually, breakfast in a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry(酥皮糕点 ). I have been
spoiled for choice with lovely cafés in the Italian town I'm living in. These cafés sell different
kinds of mouth-watering pastries — either plain(无馅料的 ) or filled with cream, chocolate, etc. —
as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy
cappuccino and a pastry with chocolate is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Normally,
an espresso or a macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk) costs around a euro and a cappuccino
3
about 1.50! They are small, of course, but this means that in Italy it is possible to go out for
coffee every day without breaking the bank.
24. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By time. B. By space. C. By example. D. By comparison.
25. Which coffee will you get in Italy if you order one without special instructions?
A. Espresso. B. Lungo. C. Cappuccino. D. Macchiato.
26. What can we learn about the coffee culture in Italy?
A. Takeaway coffee is very popular among Italians.
B. Italians are very often seen drinking huge coffees.
C. Italians like to take short breaks from work for coffee.
D. Coffees are often served along with pastries during breakfasts.
27. What does the author think of Italian coffee?
A. She loves its bitter taste. B. It is too expensive for her.
C. It is a good choice for breakfast. D. The cup it is served in is too small.
C
We have the most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives
building up our friendship circle, new research has claimed.
The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at
which we typically have five close friends. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months,
with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.
The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends
while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new
friendship. The research points out that 25-to-34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook,
compared to 18-to-24-year-olds who make 12,and 35-to-44-year-olds who make just four.
Forever Friends’ relationship coach Sam Owen says, “It is no coincidence that over a third of
us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through
sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often
forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference.”
Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving,
while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19%
to drift away from childhood friends.
With growing pressure being put on friendship these days, it’s important to make time for our
friendship.
28. How many friends can a 20-year-old college student make via Facebook?
A.4. B.12. C.18. D.22.
29. In Paragraph 5,the author is trying to tell the readers __________.
A. that it’s important to make friends B. that it’s necessary to keep friendship
4
C. that much has to be done to keep friendship D. that friendship at school is important
30. The underlined phrase “drift away from” in Paragraph 6 means “__________”.
A. make sense of B. make up with C. feel sorry for D. lose touch with
31. This passage is most probably taken from __________.
A. a novel B.an advertisement C. a newspaper D.a science fiction
D
Seeing the long-term benefit of saving energy, many cities and towns have recently replaced
their old street lights with new LED ones. But, in doing so, they may be affecting people's sleep and
putting the health of humans and other animals at risk, says a new report from the American Medical
Association( AMA) .
The AMA says certain high intensity(强度 ) LEDs can produce a disability glare and a prison
atmosphere. People of Davis, California, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and elsewhere have
complained about 4000K lights and campaigned to get the lighting replaced with 3000K types, or
failing that, so they don't spread light so widely.
More seriously, the 4000K LED units produce 29 % of their luminance(亮度 ) as blue light that
humans sense as a harsh (强烈刺眼的 ) type of white light, the AMA says. Research suggests
this light could harm health, compared with traditional street lighting.
"Brighter nighttime lighting is connected with reduced sleep time, dissatisfaction with sleep
quality, nighttime awakenings, damaged daytime functioning, and obesity," the report says. "White
LED street lighting could also cause chronic(慢性的) disease in the populations of cities
in which they have been fixed."
Blue light, whether from street lights, tablets or shoes, is thought to affect our body. At dusk it
normally reduces our body temperature, limits appetite( 胃口) and makes us sleepy. Some
researchers think blue light is connected with certain cancers.
Cities and towns need to balance the financial savings from fixing some LED lights with the
public health effects. The AMA suggests that 3000K or lower lighting for outdoor areas such as
roadways should be used.
32. What are people in some places complaining about?
A. Their street lights are too old. B. LED street lights are too bright.
C. The street lights waste too much energy. D. They have to pay tax for LED street lights.
33. One bad effect of blue light is that __________.
A. it makes people lose weight B. it increases people's body temperature
C. it causes people to eat less in the evening D. it is the main reason for many cancers
34. The AMA suggests that cities and towns should __________.
A. save money by using more LEDs B. rebuild some roadways to save energy
C. use 4000K lights to replace 3000K lights D. consider people's health when using LEDs
35. What's the main idea of the text?
A. The advantages of LEDs. B. White light and blue light.
5
C. It's time to get serious about light pollution. D. It's important to save energy by using LEDs.

选项。
What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like
the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is
intelligence the result of where and how you live? 36
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the
mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. 37 Mental exercise is particularly important for
young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more
often and give them problems to think about. 38 If, on the other hand, children are left
alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
39 According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or
she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is
probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very
clever thing you did. ”or “ 40 ”
A. It needs exercise.
B. You are such a smart child.
C. A healthy body contributes to one’s intelligence.
D. What people want to express is like this.
E. Parents should also be careful about what they say to young children.
F. The children are then more likely to grow up brightly and intelligently.
G. These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.

Dear Steven,
I’m glad to hear that you want to study in China. Here is what kind of foreign students are
favored in colleges and universities.
As far as I know, the language ability is essential, which helps you communicate with others
and makes it easier for you to understand the courses. Besides, you should have the ability to adapt
quickly to the new environment. What’s more, your interest is valued as well, for it has a lot to do
with success. Last but not the least, those who are willing to shoulder social responsibility are
especially respected and welcomed.
This is some of my advice, and I hope it can be of some help to you. May you succeed! Best
wishes and good luck.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hello, students. Welcome back to English class. Today, we’re talking about writing papers.
(17) Please take out a pencil and paper so you can take notes. (18) When I’m done with the lesson,
you will practice writing. You won’t need your textbooks today. First, you need to pick a topic. (19)
Try to think of something interesting or special that you can say a lot of things about. If you are
11
interested in your topic, then your paper will be more interesting! Write down two or three topic
ideas in your notes. Think about them for a minute, and then choose the best one. Now you need
to think about how to organize your paper. Remember that a good paper must be organized. You
can have a great idea, but if your writing is not organized, I won’t be able to understand anything!
(20) So, decide which part of your topic you want to discuss first, next, and last. Okay, you have a
good start to your papers! Let’s write.
