A primary school has banned cards of Valentine's Day ,which falls on February 14th,because of concerns that young pupils spend too much time talking about boyfriends and girlfriends.
Ashcombe Primary School in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, has told parents that cards declaring love can be "confusing" for children under the age of 11, who are still emotionally and socially developing. In this month’s newsletter (简讯), Peter Turner, the head teacher, warned that any cards found in school would be confiscated(没收).He wrote, "We do not wish to see any Valentine's Day cards in school this year. Some children and parents encourage a lot of talks about boyfriends and girlfriends. We believe that such ideas should wait until children are mature enough emotionally and socially to understand the commitment involved in having or being a boyfriend or girlfriend."Mr. Turner said any families wanting to support the Valentine's Day concept should send cards in the post or deliver them to home addresses by hand.
His views were endorsed by Ruth Rice, 46, who has twins Harriet and Olivia at the school. She said, "Children at that age shouldn't really be thinking about Valentine's Day, they should be concentrating on their schoolwork." They are at an age when they are easily influenced and most parents including myself are with Mr. Turner. She added, "The cards caused too much competition. If someone gets a card and another doesn't,then someone will be disappointed."
However, Rajeev Takyar, 40, who has two children Jai, 11, and Aryan, 5, at the school, said he was "outraged".He said, "There are schools that have banned conkers (康克戏) and snowballs, and now Valentine's Day cards."I think banning the cards stops children from having social skills. How are they going to learn about relationships otherwise? It's ridiculous.Alec Suttenwood,
Father of three children, said of the ban, "It's totally ridiculous. Young children just send the cards to each other as friends and to their parents. It's just a bit of harmless fun. There is no difference between this and Mother's or Father's Day."

C篇
Janelle was running late for work, so she just had time for a quick look at herself in the mirror as she was going out. What she saw there made her stop dead in her tracks.
Being a busy college student just one year removed from her teenage years, she wasn’t exactly obsessive-compulsive(有强迫观念和行为的) about the neatness of her clothes. But her boss at the restaurant where she works saw things a little differently. He had recently lectured the entire staff on the importance of appearance, and had specifically mentioned the need for servers to wear clean, unwrinkled blouses. As an assistant manager, Janelle felt it was important to set an example for the other employees. But if she stopped to iron the blouse normally, she would be late —and work without delay was an area of even greater concern to her boss.
So she grabbed her iron and plugged it in and set it for low heat. Carefully holding her blouse away from her body, she continued to iron it while she was wearing it. It seemed like a logical answer to an urgent problem.
And it seemed to be working until Janelle tried to iron the collar and accidentally ironed her neck by mistake. Then it suddenly seemed like a really stupid idea and a really painful one as well. It took more time to treat her burn than it would have taken to iron her shirt properly. And she spent a miserable shift dealing with the pain of the burn.
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? For me it was cutting my own hair. For a former roommate it was trying to pull his own wisdom teeth. For another college acquaintance, it was trying to change the oil in his car while the motor was still running.
“There’s a right way and a wrong way of doing things,” Dad used to tell me whenever I’d spoil the look of our yard by trying out a faster, easier and more creative way of pulling weeds or edging the lawn. “If a thing is worth doing,” he said, “it’s worth doing it right.” There’s a reason why certain things are done in certain ways. Those old, boring, predictable ways work.
61.Janelle found in the mirror that __________.
A.there were stains on her blouse
B.she wore heavy makeup
C.she put on a wrong blouse
D.her blouse was wrinkled
62.It’s learned from Paragraph 2 that______________.
A.Janelle’s boss put doing something on time above appearance
B. Janelle had no sense of responsibility at work
C.Janelle failed to set an example for employees in daily work
D.Janelle didn’t care about the neatness of her clothes at all
63.How did the author first think of Janelle ‘s way to deal with her problem?
A.Ridiculous.B.Fantastic.C.Puzzling. D.Reasonable
64.What does the underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph mean?
A.We are careful enough in daily life.
B.We all have done something creative.
C. We all have done loads of things like Janelle.
D.We all have tried to iron clothes while we are wearing them.
65.What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph ?
A.Be creative. B.Do things right.
C.A bad beginning makes a bad ending. D.Stick to old ways.

A team of researchers in the UK has shown that children who are taken to the library more often and own more books at two years old achieve higher scores in school tests when they begin primary school. The research also showed that although social background has a noticeable effect on a child's readiness for school attending preschool and having their parents teach them a wide range of activities have a positive effect―while extended exposure to television lowers their scores.
"One message coming through loud and clear is that how a child learns in his very early years is critical (至关重要的) for a smooth transition into the educational system " said Professor James Law. "This is a very positive message * as it gets us away from the belief that a child's educational future is predetermined by standard measures of socioeconomic disadvantage such as income housing or the mother's education."
Data from the study shows that children from a positive communication environment have a better expressive vocabulary by their second birthday. These children go on to achieve higher scores in language reading and maths tests when they enter school. In the early years the communication environment is a better predictor of children's success with language than their general social back?ground.
Most children develop speech and language effortless?ly but some are slow to acquire these skills and go on to struggle with literacy (读写能力) and academic skills throughout their schooling. This project set out to uncover what factors contribute to these problems.
Professor Sue Roulstone said "These findings are an encouragement to all parents to provide a positive communication environment for their children from the very start of their lives. The project did identify particular aspects of the communication environment such as having children's books around and not having the television on too much. But the main message is that as parents we can have an impact on how our children learn to talk by providing a range of communication experiences. And the better our children are at talking by the age of two years old the better they will do when they start school."
66. According to the passage, which of the following does NOT have a positive effect on children's success at school?
A. Attending pre-school.
B. Being taken to a library as early as possible.
C. Being involved in various activities.
D.Too much TV watching.
67. From the research,Professor James Law concluded that _____.
A. children could naturally have a smooth transition into the educational system
B. the very early years had a big effect on children's school performance
C. communication with children after they were over two years old was more effective
D. children's educational future was predetermined by their parents' social position .
68.The study shows that two-year-old children who have a positive communication environment do better in ___.
A.maths B.reading C.writing D.speaking
69.What is implied in the passage?
A. The research could help children who suffer from learning difficulties.
B. Parents should take their children to school as early as possible.
C. Teachers should teach children how to communicate with their parents.
D. Children who have good language abilities will not have difficulties in class.
70.People can most probably find this passage in the ____section of a website.
A. environment B. education C. lifestyle D. science

My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something
in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always
stands out. "Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something
great that will set you among the very best." Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe
in myself. "You will do something great." He didn't know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in
my life when I've felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask. "Is this
what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?"
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though.
I've come to believe he'd want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, somebody
else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. As mothers, our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don't give up because they're afraid to fail. They're only afraid of failing us. They don't worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father's letter-is of being a
disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They're writing for you to believe in them. I always knew my
parents loved me. But trust me.:That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief
in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts; "Don't worry; you'll do something great."
Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.
