“Would you mind putting all of the heavy things in one bag and all of the light things in another?” I ask the shop bagger at Whole Foods.
“Sure, no problem,” he says. “Are you okay?”
I tell him I’m recovering from (恢复) shoulder surgery and can’t lift more than three pounds with my right arm, and he insists on carrying both bags to my car. He tells me he recently had back surgery, and we chat about our experiences recovering from unexpected surgery.
As I’m cutting vegetables later that evening, I notice myself smiling about the pleasant afternoon I had. As a writer working at home, I spend a lot of time alone each day. I spent the previous month in a sling (悬带), so the silences felt heavier.
On that day in particular, I didn’t see my husband, friends, or family members, but I still felt cheerful. I commented on (评论) Netflix’s “You” with my doctor. I made small talk with the cashier at Whole Foods, who I discovered is also a writer. And there was the friendly conversation with the shop bagger.
It turns out these small interactions (互动) were enough to lift my mood. Our social lives consist of both “weak ties” and “strong ties.” A strong tie is your husband or wife, parent, brother or sister, or best friend, while a weak tie is an acquaintance of sorts — someone like your barista who prepares coffee in a coffee shop or the cashier at your favorite store.
“These kinds of small interactions with acquaintances make us feel good,” says Professor Gillian Sandstrom at the University of Essex. “It makes us feel more trust in the world and more of a sense of community. I think that’s something humans really need.”
So next time, when meeting someone who you know slightly, try making a conversation. And you may feel as happy as me.
24. Which of the following can be used to describe the shop bagger?
A. Confident.? B. Kind. C. Humorous.? D. Proud.
25. What did the author think of her previous life?
A. Terribly painful. B. Quite exciting.
C. Rather busy. D. Very lonely.?
26. Why was the author happy that day?
A. She became a writer’s close friend.
B. She spent quality time with her relatives.
C. She was as healthy as before the surgery.?
D. She communicated with some acquaintances.
27. What do Sandstrom’s words suggest??
A. Weak ties play an important role in our life.
B. Strong ties help build a sense of community.?
C. It is important to interact with family members.
D. It is sometimes hard to meet a nice acquaintance.

An online exhibition shows the works and life of tattoo (纹身) artist Charles “Coco” Bayron, a participant in the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Coco is the co-owner and primary artist at Nu Flava Ink in Congress Heights, Washington, D.C. The following quotes (引述) are taken from a special visit to his studio, which took place shortly after the Festival.
Coco began his artistic career at a young age through various ways. He says, “Art has always been in my life.” He remembers drawing personalized designs on the notebooks of classmates, but failing to impress his art teachers in spite of (尽管) winning the support of other students.
From pen drawings, Coco moved on to drawing graffiti? (涂鸦) in the South Bronx neighborhood where he spent his childhood. “Graffiti came up because we got tired of seeing wasted buildings. We wanted to see some color,” he explains. “All my art teachers would say I wasn’t an artist.” He remembers one teacher who called him “a barbarian (野蛮人), because she didn’t consider graffiti as art.” Coco spoke countless times about the usefulness of art and its existence everywhere. “If you walk in the supermarket, that’s all graffiti. Every letter’s in a different form, everything has a flow (流动性), and there’re cartoon characters!”
Coco took his natural skills and graffiti experience with him as he entered the world of tattooing, some twenty-one years ago. “I started tattooing when I started getting angry about the artwork that my friends had on them,” he explains. “So I went and got a tattoo machine, and I went and did it as a hobby. It was just repairing work.”
Coco remembers a time when people with tattoos were frightening to the public. “When I was growing up, it was the motorcycle guys. You can look at their tattoos, but don’t look them in the eyes.” Now, he says of people with tattoos, “They have their heart on their arms. They’re artists telling their stories.”
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. A list of Coco’s works.
B. An interview with Coco.
C. An introduction to Coco.
D. A description of a festival.
29. How did Coco’s art teachers react to his drawings?
A. They spoke highly of them.
B. They cared much about them.
C. They failed to appreciate them.
D. They regarded them as uncreative.
30. Why did Coco start tattooing?
A. He was inspired by a tattoo artist.
B. He was attracted by his friends’ tattoos.
C. He was angry about the tattoo machines.
D. He was unsatisfied with his friends’ tattoos.
31. How does Coco feel about people with tattoos?

The ancient city of Herculaneum lay in the countryside of Campania, Italy. It was about 5 miles southeast of Naples, at the western base of Mount Vesuvius. It was destroyed — together with?Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, Stabiae, and other communities — by the Vesuvius eruption of AD 79. The town of Ercolano now lies over part of the site. Collectively, the ruins of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
Herculaneum was badly shaken by an earthquake in AD?62. And the serious damage to its buildings had not yet been repaired when it was buried by the Vesuvius eruption of August 24, AD 79. It was deeply covered under more than 60 feet of mud and volcanic material. The population of the city at the time was about 4,000-5,000. During early excavations (挖掘), few human remains were found. Then there was a belief that most of the citizens succeeded in escaping toward Naples. In the 1980s, however, excavations at the ancient shoreline of the Bay of Naples uncovered more than 120 sets of human bones (骨骼). The remains suggested that a large number of citizens might have died while trying to escape.
The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were never rebuilt. In the course of centuries they were forgotten. Then, early in the 18th century, a well digger turned up a statue (雕像) on the site of Herculaneum. The local government soon did some excavating and unearthed other valuable art objects. The thick mud and volcanic material above Herculaneum, which had hardened to rock, made excavation difficult, and the work ended. In 1748, a farmer found some things from the buried Pompeii under his yard. Since then, excavations have gone on, with interruptions, to the present; now large parts of the city are open to view.
The number of valuable objects unearthed at Herculaneum — statues and paintings — are far larger than those from Pompeii. The most important discovery is 1,800 rolls of papyrus manuscript (纸莎草原稿).
32. Which statement best describes Ercolano?
A. It is located southeast of?Naples.
B. It lies to the west of Mount Vesuvius.
C. It was built after the earthquake in?AD?62.
D. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
33. What may be the author’s attitude to the belief mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. Supportive. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
34. Why did the digging work stop early in the 18th century?
A. Very few art objects were discovered.
B. The government prevented the work.
C. People began to excavate Pompeii.
D. The covering was deep and hard.
35. What is a major difference between Herculaneum and Pompeii?
A. Herculaneum was rebuilt after the eruption.
B. Excavations started much earlier in Pompeii.
C. Pompeii was ruined by a more disastrous eruption.
D. More art treasures have been found at Herculaneum.

Reasons you should be visiting museums
If you have been to museums, then you must know that they are some of the best places to spend quality time by yourself or with loved ones. ?36 . However, this could not be any further from the truth. Here are three reasons why you should start listing museums as interesting places to visit:
?37
You could be interested in dinosaurs (恐龙), the facts of history or Disney characters; there is always something for everyone in museums. ?38 . Museums tend to (往往会) bring these varied ideas together. Finally, a visit to a museum could show you that you are not the only one with a certain hobby.

Entertainment with a learning angle (角度)
The primary goal of museums is to educate and inspire the community about something while also offering delicacies (美味) for the eyes. You could learn something interesting at the museum that you probably would not have found out otherwise. ?40 .
If you want to try something new, a museum could be just what you need. It is not just fun and adventurous but also life-changing.
A. There is always something to like
B. You get to spend time with loved ones
C. Almost everyone likes visiting museums
D. At the same time, you get to learn in a fun environment
E. We usually think of museums as places where people go?to?learn

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, “It’s time to rise!” It was Mom’s loudest voice, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
“Okay, Mom. I’m getting up and dressed!” I would manage to call back.
Mom spoke loudly again as she announced, “Breakfast is ready!”
By then, I couldn’t get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert (甜点).
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought. It’s only one time, so it’s no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, “Mom! Why haven’t you been putting a dessert in my school lunches?”
Mom answered, “Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you’re not getting them, then who is?”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl — the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn’t like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief; he would take just about anything that wasn’t fastened down (盖紧), so he wasn’t welcome at school. Mom and I concluded that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

One possible version:
Dear Alice,
I’m so glad to hear that you’ll come to work in China and pay a visit to me. I’ve made some plans for your visit.
We can first go to the Century Park, where we can go boating on the lake and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Then, I’ll treat you to dinner at a nice Chinese restaurant. I’m sure you’ll enjoy our local delicious food. After dinner, let’s go to a concert — you’re a music lover, aren’t you?
How do you like the plan? I can’t wait to see you.

One possible version:
???????My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem.?She explained to me that?Carl?didn’t need to be punished; he needed, more than anything, a friend. So Mom said, “I’m going to put two boxes of?desserts?in your lunch: one for you and one for Carl.” And then I put my?lunch bag?in the school closet as usual. I said nothing about the desserts to Carl, but one day, he stopped me and asked, “Why are there always two boxes of desserts in your lunches?” So I told him the reason.
???????Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother.?“That will be fine,” I said, “and you will be?welcome?at our house as long as you don’t?take?anything that doesn’t belong to you.” He agreed. After that, Carl came to our house every day?after school. He always observed our house rules and we enjoyed ourselves. Because of my mother’s example, I learned a lifelong lesson about how to recognize need and show understanding toward others.
