The A+ World Academy is certainly very different from the schools that most of us know. It is not found in a building on the side of a street. The school is based on a Norwegian tall ship that has its own long and interesting history. The ship is called?S?rlandet. It first became a school ship in 1927, and today it is the oldest fully rigged ship (全帆装船) in the world.
Sixty students aged between 15 and 18 come from all over the world to attend the school. They take part in safety drills (演习) preparing them for any possible dangers. While at sea, four to seven hours are spent in the classroom each day. Students are also required to spend two more hours working as lookouts, or in the kitchen. The school year begins in late August and ends in early July.
Beds are offered in the sleeping areas, but most students choose to sleep in hammocks (吊床) which are hung up at night and taken down and packed away in the morning. It’s supposed to be easier to sleep in a hammock at sea when the weather is bad and there is less chance of becoming seasick.
During the school year, the?S?rlandet?visits about 20 different ports (港口). The ship has two teams of 12 professional sailors each. There are seven teachers on board plus a Dean of Students and a doctor. There is no email or Internet when the ship is sailing out at sea, so students have to wait until they reach the next port to catch up with their family and friends. Once they arrive in port, students spend 50 percent of their time on field trips learning about where they are, and the other 50 percent of their time exploring on their own.

The day I walked out of a bookstore with Tom Wolfe’s?The Right Stuff, I’d only meant to buy some glue. But there it was on the shelf, and it looked interesting, so I took my glue money and bought the book. As I lay on my unmade college dorm (宿舍) bed reading about the pilots who became the first U.S. astronauts (宇航员), I discovered something I’d never had: a dream.
In his great works of fiction and nonfiction, Wolfe — who died on May 14, 2018 — made you feel as if you were there in the moment. The characters in?The Bonfire of the Vanities?seemed like real people in New York City, and?The Right Stuff?made me want to be like those test pilots. About 18 years after that day at the store, I made my first spaceflight.
In 2016, I sent him a photo of myself holding? The Right Stuff?and floating in a module (舱) during my year-long stay at the International Space Station from March 27, 2015 to March 2, 2016, and he responded the same day, in very Tom Wolfe fashion, with made-up words and unusual punctuation (标点符号).?“At last I can point with great pride at what I have done for the U.S.A.,”?he wrote. After I got back to Earth, we had lunch at the Carlyle Hotel, at a corner table. He showed up with his white three-piece suit and a walking stick with a wolf on top. I was starting to write a book myself, so I asked him how he did it. “What do you mean?” he said. “I use a pencil.”
24. Which word best describes the author’s getting? The Right Stuff??
A. Costly. ???
B. Dreamlike.
C. Unexpected. ??
D. Troublesome.
25. How does the author feel about Tom Wolfe’s books?
A. They are all true stories.
B. They are closely connected to readers.
C. They focus on people living in the moment.
D. They encourage readers to realize their dreams.
26. What did the author do in 2016?
A. He managed a hotel.
B. He made a trip into space.
C. He took a photo with Tom Wolfe.
D. He wrote a book about his spaceflight.
27. What does Tom Wolfe’s response to the author’s question show?
A. His humor.??
B. His boredom.
C. His honesty.?
D. His misunderstanding.

This week the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra from Venezuela hit with great excitement — a quality not often associated with the world of classical music.
They brought the Festival Hall to life, owing to (由于) their joy, amusing behaviour and uncontrolled enthusiasm for making music. The audience gave the youngsters a big round of applause; children and adults shouted with delight at the end of the concert.
After a basically serious, if exciting, programme, we were all hoping for some colour in the encores (加演节目), and we did get it! The hall suddenly went dark, the orchestra put on their colourful Venezuelan jackets over their black dresses or suits, and the place went wild. As the youngsters gave the first of two encores, both Latin American classics, we were no longer in wet, grey London but experiencing the spirit of Latin America. They stood up, danced and threw their jackets in the air. They had clearly done this no end of times before, but the pleasure they took in it could be felt.
The sound they make is powerful; the 180 young faces are full of concentration and pleasure, and the classical music they make feels really important. The 28-year-old conductor is a?powerhouse, owing to the fact that he jumps on the spot to encourage the orchestra, his hair waving wildly, every bone of his body bending to the notes.
The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra is the product of the El Sistema’s Orchestral Academic Programme run by the Venezuelan government which gives every girl and boy, however poor, the chance to have not only free music classes but an instrument. The result is that no fewer than a quarter of a million children — three quarters of them below the poverty line — are involved in making music in hundreds of orchestras. Given the widespread lack of interest in classical music of teenagers in this country, you couldn’t help feeling that attending one of these events is something they should be made to do.
28. How did the public react to the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra?
A. They were crazy about it.
B. They were moved to tears.
C. They were doubtful about it.
D. They were disappointed by it.
29. What quality does the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra show in Paragraph 3??
A. Care.
B. Strictness.
C. Determination.
D. Enthusiasm.
30. The underlined word “powerhouse” in Paragraph 4 refers to someone _____.
A. who has a lot of energy?
B. who is good at sports ?
C. who has a kind heart
D. who is independent
31. What can we learn about the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra?
A. It is supported by the government.
B. It aims to train the poor to make music.
C. It has changed millions of children’s lives.
D. It consists of world-famous talented musicians.

Australian actor and comedian Rebel Wilson first came to public attention in Australian TV shows such as?Pizza,?The Wedge?and?Bogan Pride. Since then, her career has taken off, with star turns in movies such as?Bridesmaids,?Pitch Perfect?and? The Hustle.
But it seems that just about every time she opens her mouth, whether in person or in character, there’s a weight-based reference. She played a character called Fat Amy in?Pitch Perfect?and years before that she was Fat Mandi in?The Wedge.
Here’s what I want to know: Does Rebel imagine everyone is making fun of her size when they see her? Sadly, it seems so.
I can understand that being large in a fat-phobic (谈胖色变的) society must sometimes be funny and I also understand that as a 100 kg woman in Hollywood, Rebel needs to have a good sense of humour.
But I think she’s past being a symbol for the fat movement and should just get on with being a great actor and comedian. In any case, when you base your whole career on being the funny fat girl offering up your body for laughs, what happens when you lose weight?
It reminds (使……想起) me of British comedian Dawn French, who has been a large woman for many, many years and who declared war on fat jokes a few years ago.?“It is no more acceptable to make a fat joke than to make a racist (种族主义的) joke,”?she said.
Rebel and Dawn are naturally funny women who surely don’t need to use their size in such a manner all the time.
I worry that fat-centred humour makes it acceptable for non-fat people to laugh at fat people and make jokes at their expense.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where larger female actors?—?even excellent ones such as Melissa McCarthy?—?are called?“female hippos (河马)”?by critics, so I can understand them wanting to get in first with a joke.
Rebel gets away with it because she is very funny, but she has so much more to offer than her size being the topic of her own jokes.
32. What do we know about Rebel Wilson??
A. She has a great career.?
B. She is really proud of her size.
C. She came to public attention recently.?
D. She is more famous as a comedian than an actor.
33. What should Rebel do in the author’s opinion?
A. Attempt to lose weight.?
B. Try to be more humorous.
C. Learn from Hollywood stars.
D. Stop making fun of her body.?
34. What does Dawn French think of fat jokes?
A. They lead to racism.
B. They are unacceptable.
C. They have ruined her career.
D. They encourage people to put on weight.
35. How can we describe the name “female hippo”?
A. Objective.?
B. Disrespectful.
C. Admirable. ??
D. Puzzling.
Yodel-ay-hee-hoo
When most people think about Switzerland, they think of Swiss cheese, Swiss Army knives, tall Alpine mountains, and yodeling Most of us have seen at least one movie in which someone stands on a mountainside and calls,?“Yodel-ay-hee-hoo”.??36
Yodeling is widely believed to have originated in the Alpine area as a means of communicating over large distances and calling cows. In the 1200s, early herders in the Alpine area discovered that they could alternate (交替) their voices between a regular (规则的) singing voice and a falsetto (假嗓子) voice. This kind of singing became known as yodeling in English.
?37??By 1830, it was a popular act in theaters and music halls. It was also included in many Austrian and Swiss folk songs. In the United States, some of the traveling singers in the 19th century performed yodeling.??38??Folk singer Jimmie Rodgers made a recording called “Blue Yodel No.1.” He finally recorded 13 blue yodel songs, which combined yodeling with African American blues and work songs. Rodgers’ recording made yodeling popular in the United States.
?39??They do it by rapidly changing from their regular chest singing voice to their falsetto head voice. They might be changing several times in just a few seconds. It takes time and training for singers to learn how to move so quickly between the two voice levels.
?40??Listen to some yodeling performances, then find a mountaintop, or at least some place where you won’t bother anyone, and give it a try.?
A. How do singers yodel?
B. People felt discontent with these wild songs.
C. Yodeling has found its way into many modern movies.
D. Singers began using yodeling in other forms of music.
E. But just what is this strange noise, what is it for, and how did it get started?
F. Many people try yodeling, especially because it is said to help reduce stress.
G. It didn’t take long for yodeling to move from a folk tradition to a type of entertainment.

54. A。55. C。56. B。 She has become positive ... and responsible及She is always by our side可知,作者告诉Carol,爱犬Grace已经“长大了(grown up)”。
58. D。59. A。 I would be more patient及上文中对作者从爱犬身上学到很多的描述可知,作者真心“希望(hoped)”自己能变得更有耐心,这也是他从爱犬Grace身上“学到(learned)”的东西。
60. C。根据本段中的a story had brought us together可知,故事能让人们的心靠得“更近(closer)”。
61. It。
When I lived at home with my parents可知,设空处是对过去事实的描述,应用一般过去时,故填had。
63. lessons。
64. on。 spend ... on ... 上花费……”。
65. taking。 have difficulty (in) doing sth.
66. to get。
67. which。
68. better。
69. unfortunately。 I don’t have a piano any more可知,设空处在此表示“遗憾地”,故填unfortunately。
70. written。
