Four finalists from the Young Scientist Award competition talk about making a video and giving presentations to the judges.
Maria?studied the effects of energy drinks and produced one herself.
If you’re having a block, wait a day or two and look at it with fresh eyes. You’ll find inspiration somewhere. But make sure that you have enough time to complete your video! Waiting until the last minute, when you are all rushed, isn’t a good idea. If you have a plan laid out before you start anything, it helps to keep you moving forward.
Erik?invented a material which can be painted on football boots to stop them attracting mud.
I think the best ideas come from everyday life — because that’s where they are going to be put to use after all! Start thinking of ideas with your family and friends and write down every possibility which comes into your head. But make sure your project is realistic.
David?has found a way of working out how long bicycle tyres will last.
For your video, pick a concept (概念) that you can explain so that it’s visual (形象化的) and interesting. People have different learning styles, so use different methods to explain the same concept. There were some finalists who had memorised a lot more scientific facts than me, but I was able to take a scientific concept and explain it in a simple way.
Anita?produced lights which come on and go off automatically and can be attached to a bicycle.
Making a great video, which gets all the ideas across, isn’t as easy as it looks, so it’s good to look at past entries (参赛作品) from finalists and learn what makes them successful. And one of the hardest parts is fitting your information into two minutes. It seems like plenty of time, but it goes by so quickly!
21. What does Maria suggest people do when making a video?
A. Draw up a plan first.
B. Find new ideas from daily life.
C. Share their thoughts with judges first.
D. Finish their videos as soon as possible.
22. How did David explain his idea?
A. By introducing a new method.
B. By making it clear and interesting.
C. By presenting various scientific facts.
D. By using the same method to show different ideas.
23. How does Anita prepare to make a video?
A. She asks her family for help.?
B. She searches for a realistic idea.
C. She collects the latest information.
D. She learns from past finalists’ works.

Born in Burma (also known as Myanmar) in 1945, Aung San Suu Kyi was the only daughter of Aung San, Burmese nationalist leader. She attended high school in New Delhi and then studied at Oxford University. She moved to New York for graduate studies, where she worked as a hospital volunteer, helping patients learn to read. Following her marriage to Michael Aris, she went to the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also writing several books about her country.
In 1988 Suu Kyi formed a league (联盟) to carry out non-violent civil disobedience (温和抵抗) and toured her country, making speeches calling for democratic (民主的) government of Burma. She promised to serve her country, even at the risk of death, as her father and mother had done, and continued her campaign while facing the arrests and killings of her followers. She was placed under house arrest with her sons in 1989, and went on hunger strike in support of students arrested with her.
After receiving various human rights prizes, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 but was unable to collect it in Oslo as she was still under arrest, and refused to buy her freedom by agreeing not to take part in political activities. She announced that she would use the prize money to provide health and education services for the Burmese people. Her popularity continued to grow, at home and abroad. Suu Kyi discouraged tourists from visiting Burma until it was free. Her husband died in 1999; he had not seen her since 1995 and was refused permission to visit her one last time.
After spending 15 years under house arrest, Suu Kyi regained her freedom. She travelled to Europe, where in June 2012 she finally made her acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize. She believes that solving human rights problems is about discovering and solving the roots of them.

As a teen myself, I’ve seen first-hand the pleasing effects of poetry. Not too long ago, I went on stage to read my poetry at a writing workshop, thinking anxiously to myself: Would the audience understand me? More than being nervous about the quality of my poem, I felt anxious about what my voice would sound like. At the time, I was 14, and still suffering from a speech disorder (语言障碍) that had affected me since I began talking. As I stood, I experienced a sudden appreciation for the blinding lights. I couldn’t see everyone’s face! That made things much easier. I opened my book and began to read.
After the writing workshop, I gained the confidence to read my own work aloud. I learned that writing wasn’t about pronunciation, but about style and the author’s voice. This lesson helped me grow on endless occasions in my life, convincing (使……确信) me that poetry can have an astonishing influence when taught to teens.
One organization that I am part of, WriteGirl, through monthly creative writing workshops, gives girls the skills they need for a brighter future. Although WriteGirl doesn’t only focus on poetry, the organization still uses poetry to teach, inspire and empower girls all across Los Angeles. While the high school graduation rate (比例) in Los Angeles is only 80 percent, every year 100 percent of WriteGirl teens not only graduate from high school, but move on to college.
But are these advantages becoming needless with the fast development of technology being placed in young hands?
It seems the answer is quite the opposite: technology has opened a whole new world for young poets and writers. On?KidBlog, young students can post their poems as a blog post on which others can leave their opinions. The Internet makes it easier for viewers to read poetry. Many people are discovering or rediscovering that poetry is fun and creates many opportunities for self-expression.
As I stepped up to read my writing at the workshop, I learned that poetry is about having a voice, and the courage to use it. With this courage, we free ourselves and become able to influence others.
28. How did the workshop influence the author?
A. It aided her in making a long speech.
B. It helped her find her own strengths.
C. It improved her communication skills.
D. It made her begin to take speech disorder seriously.
29. What can we learn about WriteGirl?
A. It is beneficial to girls’ studies.
B. It brings out girls’ poetic skills.?
C. It encourages girls to teach poetry.
D. It helps girls become famous writers.
30. Which of the following may the author agree with??
A. Poetry is old-fashioned in modern times.
B. Technology makes creating poetry easier.
C. Technology serves as a useful tool for poetry.
D. The Internet slows down the development of poetry.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. How poetry gave me a voice
?B. Why teens don’t read poetry
?C. Approaches to learning poetry
?D. Influence of technology on poetry

Almost like a clock tower, a town in the western highlands of Guatemala has been able to practically tell the time by the regular (定期的) eruptions of a local volcano. In the town of Quetzaltenango, volcanoes have erupted so frequently that they have nearly marked every passing hour of every day for 96 years.
The source is Santiaguito, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It is situated at the base of the large volcano?Santa María. It took shape about twenty years after the violent eruption of Santa María in 1902.
“Since then, almost continuous small explosions have happened along with the growth of Santiaguito,” says Stephanie Grocke, a volcanologist. “There has not been a long period of time since 1922 when Santiaguito was quiet.”
Scientists are trying to figure out what is causing the regular activity at Santiaguito, Grocke adds.?“What we know for sure is that magma (岩浆) and gas (气体) are steadily rising from deep within the system, allowing the volcano to continuously show signs of life,” Grocke says.
A possible explanation is that before an explosion, the vent, or opening, at the top of Santiaguito is closed, trapping (堵住) hot gases and magma below. As the gas builds up, the pressure increases and eventually tears through the top’s sealed vent, letting out the gases and sending magma and rocks skyward. Santiaguito eventually runs out of fuel, causing eruptions to stop. The materials that were sent out cover the top, reclosing Santiaguito’s vent and starting the process over again.??
The sizes of the eruptions are never the same, Grocke says. Most often, they tend to be small, producing mainly ash plumes (火山灰) that can reach a height of nearly 1,640 feet, or lava flows that travel about two miles from the top. However, there are some eruptions that are very?hazardous.
“At times, larger explosions happen, producing ash plumes that rise less than 3 kilometers above the vent,” Grocke says. Such cases can result in hot fast-moving?flows made up of gas, ash, and rock, which can be deadly to local communities. Volcanic mudflows are also another serious risk.
32. When did Santiaguito form according to the text?
A. Around 1806.
B. Around 1902.?
C. Around 1922.
D. Around 1942.
33. Which of the following about Santiaguito have scientists understood?
A. When the volcano stops erupting.
B. Why the regular activity changes.
C. What is happening inside the volcano.??
D. How fast the magma and gas are rising.??
34. What happens after Santiaguito erupts?
A. The vent is closed again.
B. Cooler gases are produced.
C. The fuel inside gradually increases.
D. More openings form at Santiaguito’s top.????
35. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Weak.
B. Dangerous.
C. Brief.????
D. Similar.

概要写作
???????阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
?????? Man is forever changing the face of nature. He has been doing so since he first appeared on the earth. Yet, all that man has done is not always to the advantage of the earth or himself. Man has, in fact, destroyed more than necessary.
?????? In his struggle to live and get the most out of life, man has destroyed many species of wildlife. Some species may be able to survive the destruction of their habitats while others may not be able to deal with it. Every form of human activity unavoidably changes the wildlife complex of the area. Man has destroyed many forms of wildlife for no reasonable purpose.
?????? Man’s attitude towards animals depends on the degree to which his own survival is affected. He sets aside protection for animals that he hunts for sport and starts a war against any other creature that may cause danger or inconvenience. This creates many problems and man has made unchangeable, serious mistakes in his destruction of predators (捕食者). He has destroyed animals and birds which are useful to farmers as pest controllers. The sad thing is that all the killing of predators has not in any way led to an increase in the number of what he wished to protect.
?????? Broadly speaking, man starts a war against creatures which he considers harmful, even when his activity makes little or no difference. There is a delicate (微妙的) predator and prey (猎物) balance involving also the vegetation of any area, which man can change by thoughtless intervention (干预). Therefore, there is a need for checks and balances. The continued existence of these animals depends entirely on man and his attitude towards his own future.
