教学内容分析
旅游熏陶人的情操,增长人的见识;旅游锤炼人的意志,开拓人的智慧;对山川的爱恋还激发人们对祖国的爱,对生活的爱。
本单元的中心话题是旅游,通过旅游日记的方法描述旅游见闻。
热身(Warming up)部分有二个问题组成,第一个问题让学生自己喜欢的交通工具。要求他们对四种交通方式的利和弊进行探讨。第二个问题中给出六个日常交际用语,让学生结合这些句子练习关于旅游的表达方式,从而达到热身的目的。
读前(Pre-reading)部分的问题都是关于河流的,涉及了河流的用处以及选择一条河流旅游的原因。主要是引导学生向阅读部分过渡。
阅读(Reading)部分:本单元“湄公河旅行游记”一共有六部分构成。第一部分The Dream
and plan在Reading中讲述了王坤和王薇梦想沿湄公河做自行车旅行,并为之做准备的过程。文章分了三段,第一段讲了王坤和王薇的梦想及买好自行车,邀请表弟参加。第二段讲了王薇的决心及要面临的困难。第三段讲了他们去图书馆查阅的相关资料。
理解(Comprehending)部分通过一些练习和问题,让学生对课文内容有了初步理解。
语言学习(Learning about language)部分通过在句子中填写课文中的单词和短语,完成短文填空的练习讲述了主要词汇及其运用和主要语法项目(用现在进行时表示将来)。
语言运用(Using Language)部分含四个方面综合训练部分。Reading and discussing 是“湄公河旅行游记”的第二部分A Night in the Mountains,主要讲述了他们在西藏山中度过的一宿,爬山路的艰苦及乐趣。。Listening and speaking 围绕中心话题,讲述王坤和王薇在去大理与表兄弟会面的路上与一个老挝女孩的对话Chatting with a girl这是“湄公河旅行游记”的第三部分。Writing要求学生围绕话题写一封email。练习册Listening是Our journey through Laos, 这是“湄公河旅行游记”的第四部分, Listening task 是By the river in Laos, 这是“湄公河旅行游记”的第五部分, Reading task是The end of our journey这是“湄公河旅行游记”的第六部分。
小结(Summing Up)部分引导学生从本单元的话题,词汇和语法等方面对所学内容进行总结。
学习建议(Learning Tip )部分给学生提出写旅行日志的方法和好处,鼓励学生外出旅行时写旅游日志(travel journal).

Teaching Goals:
1. To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about traveling.
2. To develop Ss’ listening ability.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1. Leading-in
Purpose: To activate Ss and arouse them to talk about traveling.
Ask some Ss what activities they did during the summer vacation. You may ask the following questions.
1. Did you stay at home or go to some places during your summer holidays
2. Where did you go
3. What places have you ever been to
4. Do you like traveling Why or why not
Step 2. Warming Up
Purpose: To lead Ss to the topic of this unit.
1. Pair work
Get Ss to ask each other the questions, and then ask them to present it before the class.
(1) Which means of transportation (bike, bus, ship, plane, etc) have you tried
(2) Which do you like best Why
(3) What do you have to consider before you decide which means of transportation you will use
Sample:
I like traveling by bike best, because it is a good exercise for me to ride a bike. Second, it doesn’t pollute the air like cars. Still another reason is traveling by bike sounds interesting and new because very few people can do it. The last reason is that I won’t suffer from motion sickness if I travel by bike.
2. Group work
Get Ss to talk about a 6-day holiday.
You are going to have a 6-day national holiday. Please work in a group of four to make a plan for the 6-day travel. Your plan will include answers to the following questions.

Q4 What means of transportation will you employ

Step3. Listening (Workbook)
Purpose: To help Ss learn about the context of the Listening part.
1. Group work: Ask Ss to discuss with their partners in groups of four what will happen in the listening text according to the questions. Present your opinions to your classmates.
2. Listen to the fourth part of Journey Down The Mekong and finish the following exercises.
Listen to it and tick the words you hear on the tape.

Discuss the following questions with your group members.

2. Pair work
Do the talking task as required with your partner.

A: Think about it: cans are heavy to carry on a bike. So no cans means no can openers.
B: Yes, you’re right. And I’m not sure about the need for an umbrella.

Ask Ss to read the questions (P58) and think about them carefully.

Discuss the questions with your desk mate.
Listen to the tape about Wang Kun’s description about their tour then check the answers individually.
Step6. Summary
Help Ss to sum up what has been taught and what they have learned in this part, e.g. making a list of the means of transportation, etc.
Step 7. Homework
Write a short composition to introduce one of your trips.

Teaching Goals:
1. To learn about something about Wang Kun and Wang Wei’s attitudes about the trip.
2. To develop some basic reading skills.
3. To develop Ss’ ability to talk about traveling and describe a journey in English.
Teaching Procedures:
Step1. Warming Up
Purpose: To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about Travel journal.
1. Free talk:
Tell Ss a long-trip experience and let Ss talk about their travel experience to their partners.
Group work:
Tell Ss that now they are planning to spend a holiday somewhere in Southeast Asia and ask the questions.
(1) What are you preparing for the trip
(2) Where are you going and what are you planning to do each day
(3) How are you getting there
(4) How long are you staying there
(5) When you leave home, what will your family and your friends say to you
Give Ss a few minutes to discuss the questions in pairs and ask some pairs to act out their dialogues.
Step2. Brainstorming
Purpose: To have Ss learn about some rivers in the world.

Step 3. Reading
Purpose: To have Ss learn more about their tour.
Group work:
Show the map on top of the passage and ask Ss to discuss how many countries the Mekong River goes through. And this is a good time to introduce the new words about geography, such as glacier, rapids, waterfall, plains and so on. Ask Ss to check their vocabulary about geography in groups.
Vocabulary: China; Laos; Burma; Thailand; Cambodia; Vietnam.
2. Individual work
(1) Get Ss to read the text and tell whether the statements are true or false individually.

3. Summing up
We have learned about traveling in this passage. That is to say, before traveling we should make good preparations — making a plan, deciding the place to visit and getting enough information about the place. Then we’ll have a good time. Give Ss a little time to make a simple traveling plan by themselves so that they can share their ideas with their partners.

Step3. Grammar
Purpose: To learn the use of the present continuous tense for future actions.
1. Ask Ss to read the dialogue (P21) and underline the verbs that express future actions. Let Ss study the example. Make sure they understand what to do.
2. Ask the students to check in pairs. Write two of the sentences on the blackboard:

3. Ask Ss to make an introduction of the grammatical phenomenon. Ask questions like these:
What is the verb form ( -ing form.)
In what tense is the verb used (The present continuous tense.)
Does it refer to the present (No, it doesn’t.)
What tense does it refer to (The future tense.)
4. Make a summary: The present continuous tense may be used for future actions. It is used to denote an action which can be pre-planned or prearranged. The following verbs can be used in this grammar: go, arrive, come, leave, start, stay, return, play, do, have, work, wear, spend, see, meet, etc.
5. Ask Ss to read the dialogue again in pairs.
6. Finish the following dialogue with the proper tense.

1. This is the second part of Wang Kun’s journal. From the passage, we know that it is late at night and Wang Kun’s sister is sleeping in the tent.
Ask Ss to discuss the following questions and answer them in pairs.

About Three Gorges Dam
If completed, China’s Three Gorges Dam would be the largest and most powerful dam in the world. It will stretch two kilometers across the Yangtze River, stand 185 meters high, and create a 600-kilometer lake behind it. But the destruction caused by the dam would be equally massive: almost two million people would lose their homes and livelihoods.
