Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those who are interested in adventure and sport, there is a lot to do. Vanuatu’s islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano(火山)surfing and land diving.
Volcano Surfing
On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 metres into the sky. Yasur is an active volcano, and it erupts(爆发)almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, people have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways it’s very different. Volcano surfers try to escape the erupting volcano—without getting hit by flying rocks! It’s fast, fun and dangerous—the perfect extreme sport(极限运动).
Land Diving
Most people are familiar with bungee jumping, but do you know bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu and is almost fifteen centuries old? The activity, first called land diving, is part of a religious ceremony(宗教仪式). A man ties tree vines(树藤)to his legs. He then jumps head?first from a high tower to touch the earth with the top of his head—without breaking the vine. Every spring, island natives (men only) still take part in this amazing activity.

Hello Sandy,
We have just returned from our holiday. We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors. This is a beautiful place. It is a natural park. There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people just sheep and birds.
Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as he used to. However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live. Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon while the ladies went for another walk. Very pleasant!
I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley (峡谷) below us of the morning sunrise and the mist in the valley. Also, in England, the old steam powered trains (蒸汽火车) are very popular. I have taken many photos of the train and I really want to share them with you.
Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter. It is very early (we usually expect snow in January). It rained all day and then snowed in the evening. Today we have bright sunshine!
Both Jenny and I are well. I don’t know if I told you in the last email that Jenny is now working in a hotel. Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.
Please write to us to tell us your news.
Yours,
Victor

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar (阴历). This day is always the first full moon in the new year. Ancient people also called it Shangyuan Festival. Celebrations and traditions on this day began from the Han Dynasty (朝代) and became popular in the Tang Dynasty.
Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes are usually put on trees, or along river banks on show. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming to ask for help when he was in trouble.
Today, when the lanterns slowly rise into the air, people make wishes.
Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. The riddles are usually short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character (汉字), a famous person’s name, or a place name.
The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao while in southern part they’re named tangyuan. Because making sweet dumplings is like a game or an activity, they are usually done happily by a
group of friends or family members.
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic (浪漫的).
Watching lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this:

When you think of a museum, I bet you don’t think of a place where children run around. But the Science Museum is different. It’s noisy!
You can get to the Science Museum by going on the London Underground from Waterloo on the Jubilee line to Westminster. Then take the Circle or the District line to South Kensington. When you walk out, take a look around you, and you should see it.
What to bring: at least two bottles of a drink for the kids and £10 to spend in the cafes. Entrance is free!
The most interesting and exciting part of coming here is to go to the kids’ area, the Launch Pad on the 3rd floor. At busy times, you may have to wait in line, but staff(工作人员) will provide science toys for you and the kids to play with. It is great fun in there. And if you love science, it should indulge(满足) you as you will learn about science in a fun way. There are also simulators(模拟装置) on the 3rd floor, so think of Floor 3 as a “fun floor”.

She is a cute, quiet girl. As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her. But recently she has become rather mysterious(神秘的), not so open as her. What if she falls in love, which is too early of her age? After all, she is reaching the “dangerous time”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.
One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmates and would return late. This was the first time her mother
agreed, and she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited till nine and decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that time the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and—there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. Bill: My favourite book is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch(女巫) and the Wardrobe (衣橱) by C.S. Lewis. It’s about four children who find a magical land inside a wardrobe. A witch makes the land winter forever. The children help save the magical land from the witch with the help of Aslan, a great talking lion. The children become leaders. But then they come back to our world…until their next journey in Narnia.
Eric: I like reading The Magic School Bus written by Joanna Cole best. The magic school bus can go everywhere, even inside the human body. I like Arnold, a boy in Ms Frizzle’s class. He’s really funny and he’s always scared.
Grace: One of my all-time favourite books is Ugly by Donna Jo Napoli. It’s the story of an ugly young duck. It’s a little sad, but after you finish reading it, you’ll want to read it again and again. The way Donna Jo Napoli writes is special, and you can really get inside the characters’ heads. It sounds like music when it’s being read to you.
Sally: My favourite book is called Bloomability by Sharon Creech. It’s about a girl whose parents are always on the move. Then she is suddenly taken to Switzerland by her aunt and uncle, away from her family. Interested? Then read this book!
Jane: My favourite book is Nancy Drew Mystery (疑案) Stories: The Whispering Statue (低语的雕塑) by Carolyn Keene. I have read it about four times! It is about a girl who loves solving mysteries, and she finds a statue that whispers. Well, I’m not going to tell you the story. I’ll let you read it for yourself.

Gabriel Garqacia Marquez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, passed away at the age of 86 on April 17, 2014. The world paused (停顿) to remember the cultural giant.
