四、完形填空
The part of the environmental movement that draws my firm's attention is the design of cities, buildings and products. When we designed America's first so-called "green" office building in New York two decades ago, we felt very alone. But today, thousands of people come to green building conferences, and the 50 that buildings can be good for people and the environment will be 51 influential in years to come .
Back in 1984, we discovered that most manufactured products for decoration weren't designed for 52 use. The "energy-efficient" sealed commercial buildings constructed after the 1970s energy crisis 53 indoor air quality problems caused by materials such as paint, wall covering and carpet. So far 20 years, we've been focusing on these materials down to the molecules(分子), looking for ways to make them 54 for people and the planet.
Home builders can now use materials-such as paints that release significantly reduced amounts of organic compounds-that don't 55 the quality of the air, water, or soil. Ultimately, however, our basic design strategy is focused not simply on being 'less bad'" but on creating 56 healthful materials that can be either safely returned to the soil 57 reused by industry again and again. As a matter of 58 , the world's largest carpet manufacturer has already 59 a carpet that is fully and safely recyclable.
Look at it this way: No one 60 out to create a building that destroys the planet. But our current industrial systems are 61 causing these conditions, whether we like it or not. So 62 simply trying to reduce the damage, we are 63 a positive approach. We're giving people high-quality, healthful products and an opportunity to make choices that had a 64 effect on the world. It's not just the building industry, either. Entire cities are taking these environmentally positive approaches to design, planning and building. Portland, Seattle and Boston have said they want to be green cities. Chicago wants to be the greenest city in the world.

五、阅读理解
A
We usually think of pollution as a harmful waste substance that threatens the air and water. But some people have become concerned about another kind of pollution. It can be everywhere, depending on the time of the day. And it is not thought of as a substance. It is light.
The idea of light pollution has developed with the increase of lights in cities. In many areas, this light makes it difficult or impossible to observe stars and planets in the night sky. In 1988, the International Dark-Sky Association formed. This organization wants to reduce light pollution in the night sky. It also urges the effective use of electric lighting.
There are a number of reasons why light pollution is important. One has become clear at the Mount Wilson Observatory near Los Angeles, California. Mount Wilson Observatory was home to the largest telescopes in the world during the first half of the Nineteen Hundreds.
During that period, Los Angeles grew to become one of America’s biggest cities.
Today, light from Los Angeles makes the night sky above Mount Wilson very bright. It is no longer an important research centre because of light pollution.
Light pollution threatens to reduce the scientific value of research telescopes in other important observatories. They include Lick Observatory near San Jose, California and Yerkes Observatory near Chicago, Illinois.
Light pollution is the result of wasted energy. Bright light that shines into the sky is not being used to provide light where it is needed on Earth. Poorly designed lighting causes a great deal of light pollution.
Lights that are brighter than necessary also cause light pollution. Objects in the night sky are resources that provide everyone with wonder. But light pollution threatens to prevent those wonderful sights from being seen.
1. In the passage the main concern of the writer is that ______.
A. too much energy is wasted as a result of the use of light
B. Americans will no longer enjoy the beautiful sight of the solar system
C. light pollution in North America is more serious than that in other areas
D. it becomes more difficult to observe stars and planets in the night sky as a result of light pollution
2. The main purpose of the International Dark-Sky Association is to ______.
A. make the night sky bright and pretty
B. stop the use of electric lighting
C. prevent the overuse of electric lighting
D. observe stars and planets through a telescope
3. One of the reasons why reducing light pollution is important is that ______.
A. the telescope in all the observatories will not be effective at all due to light pollution
B. light pollution threatens to reduce the scientific value of research in some important research centres
C. it is possible that the world map will be unclear at last
D. the light needed on Earth isn’t made good use of
4. How many observatories are mentioned in the passage?
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.

Nutrition and exercise has always been of the leading importance to me. The concept of living a healthy life style can, at times, be a fearsome task. It takes a lot of time and effort to exercise, eat nutritious meals, all this while working everyday, and trying to have a little bit of fun in between time. So how is it done, what is the secret rule to being the healthy and happy person you want to be?
The secrets are simple, everything in moderation (适度) and don’t try to go beyond your immediate limitations. This little lesson goes for all the good things and bad things we do to ourselves. When starting a new exercise programme go slow at first, let your body learn to adjust and adapt. I am a strong supporter of exercising every day but 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes is adequate for good heart health and physical well being. It doesn’t matter what you do really, swimming, biking, running, or a pick up game of football are all very good.
Exercise is just part of the healthy process that must be balanced with good nutrition. Living in a maritime area allows us to eat a variety of seafood that is particularly good for the body. Seafood is great, but we need to eat more foods low in saturated (饱和) fat and cholesterol (胆固醇); and cut down on high fat ones, especially those high in saturated fat. Try grilling (烧烤) and poaching (水煮) of seafood instead of frying in oil, eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
There are no real short cuts here, but just a little effort can take you down a path to a long, healthy and happy life.
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to be a healthy and happy person.
B. Exercise is a part of the healthy progress.
C. How should people do exercise?
D. How do people eat seafood?
6. The underlined word “maritime” in the third paragraph is probably connected with “______”.
A. ship B. sea C. land D. river
7. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. fruits, vegetable and grains are more important than seafood for people’s health
B. people should eat less seafood fried in oil
C. people should eat more food rich in cholesterol
D. foods high in saturated fat should be eaten more

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in blank with a proper sentence given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Better transportation could help America’s senior citizens lead more active lives.
B. Better public transportation system must be changed in no time to make the senior citizens’ dream come true.
C. Better eating habits, more exercise, and advances in medical care are helping Americans live longer and healthier lives.
D. Isolation is a growing problem for elderly Americans.
E. Travelling by car should not be a Senior citizen’s only position.
F. Mobility plays an important role in the elderly people’s life.
The number of American seniors is growing more quickly than any other portion of the population. _______67______
This is, of course, good news. However, an aging population has needs that are not being met. One of these needs is public transportation. ______68_______ There is a growing need for the benefits that public transportation can provide older Americans.
America’s older citizens require increased mobility. With better public transportation, seniors would have more options when choosing where to live. They would also have more choices when deciding how and where they would like to travel. ______69_______
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 35 million Americans were 65 years old or older in the year 2000. Because there was a baby boom-an increase in births-between 1946 and 1964, the senior population in America will grow much faster than the rest of the population. Many older people already live in suburban locations that lack transit options, and as the baby boomers age, the number of older citizens who live in these areas will continue to increase.
_______70______ Not only does it affect their ability to take care of their basic needs, it also affects their ability to make contributions to their neighbors and society as a whole. This kind of feeling is felt most by those who are over the age of 85 and who have medical conditions that prevent them from driving.
Many people think that the answer to helping mobility for an aging population is simple. They believe that public transportation systems must be upgraded and expanded so that seniors have the resources available to meet their transportation needs.
七、Summary Writing
We’re What We Do
Not long ago, as if they had been infected with a virus, many people searched for dresses on Taobao and shared a screenshot of the search result on social media. This trend came after a claim by a Weibo user who has worked in online retail: Online shoppers whose searches for dresses turn up results priced below RMB 128 have been labeled the “low-priced crowd” by Taobao, based on analysis of their browsing and purchasing history.
You probably shop online and already know that the stores try to make a profile of you as their customer. They keep track of your spending patterns and they predict how much you are going to spend.
To my surprise, people didn’t feel uneasy about this because internet platforms are measuring their habits and trying to make a profile of them. I noticed that the screenshots were often shared together with texts like “I’m a poor guy indeed” or “I’m the high-priced passenger.” For some people, the screenshot — the label given by an internet platform — was an embodiment of their self-image. In consumer psychology, there is this theory that consumption is an important way for people to express their self-image. But can these screenshots define their image? The answer may be not.
Self-image is very complex. Although we tend to “read” each other’s clothes to gauge wealth or social status, we know in our heart that we are more than what we wear. Billionaires can wear torn and faded jeans and their oldest sneakers when riding the subway; while some people spend up to half of their income on clothes, shoes and hair for fear that their “image” might be under attack. The peacock and the lion come to mind. Biologists tell us that animals compete for status through displays of beauty or strength. As humans, we are a little more complicated in how we send signals and perhaps more aware that “image,” especially online, is not reality.
We are more than what we buy and what we wear. Bear these words of the famous philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre: “We are what we do.” A healthy self-image is best constructed through activities which are unrelated to consumption. Sport, crafting, reading, study and volunteering will bring satisfaction, self-worth and personal growth. Compared with paying too much attention to what you wear, learning an instrument or reading a novel is a better investment in yourself.

College and Success in Life
Nowadays, a lot of people believe going to college is the only way to a brighter future. But as for me, college education is important but not a must in life, just as famous saying goes “All roads lead to Rome.”
Undoubtedly, college education has a positive effect on your professional development if you want to have a career such as law, engineering, chemistry or medicine, especially in a society full of competition. Although it can help you succeed in some way, college education is not essential to whether you are successful or not in life. For instance, you can even become a brilliant movie star like Jackie Chan, or a successful businessman like Bill Gates in a particular field without higher education.
In conclusion, college education may be a good preparation but definitely not the only means to your future success.
