Norway is the happiest place on Earth, according to a United Nations agency report --- toppling neighbour Denmark from the number one position.
The World Happiness Report measures "subjective well-being" - how happy the people are, and why. Denmark. Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last.
Western Europe and North America ___31___ the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th, respectively. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and those ___32___ by conflict have predictably low scores. Syria placed 152 of 155 countries --- Yemen and South Sudan, which are facing ___33___ famine, came in at 146 and 147.
The World Happiness Report was released to ___34___ with the United Nations' International Day of Happiness on 20 March. It mainly relies on asking a simple, subjective question of more than 1,000 people every year in more than 150 countries.
“Imagine a ladder, with ___35___ numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top," the question asks.” The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?"
The average result is the country's score --- ___36___ from Norway's 7.54 to the Central African Republic's 2.69. But the report also tries to analyze statistics to explain why one country is happier than another. It looks at factors including economic strength, social support, life expectancy, freedom of choice, generosity, and perceived corruption.
This year's report also contains a chapter titled "restoring American happiness", which examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite ___37___-increasing economic improvement.
"The United States can and should raise happiness by ___38___ America's multi-faceted social crisis --- rising inequality, isolation, and distrust --- rather than focusing ___39___ or even mainly on economic growth," the authors said. "America's crisis is, in short, a social crisis, not an economic crisis."
The clear dominance of those countries --- and Denmark in particular --- has encouraged other nations to ___40___ the Danish concept of "Hygge" ---?a cultural concept of relaxation.

A. The speakers, before speaking, predicted how much the listeners would enjoy hearing them talk, and how interesting and effective the listeners would consider them.
B. The reason behind this is that the speakers seem to be able to keep their audience engaged in their stories.
C. Listeners could fill in the gaps in the speaker’s story because they had already seen the video the speaker was describing.
D. Speakers think listeners will most enjoy hearing stories about experiences that the listeners have not themselves had, but our studies suggest the speakers were wrong.
E. That’s because those experiences are so complex that they are nearly impossible for an ordinary person to communicate well.
F. As a matter of fact, however, listeners responded much more positively, when they had seen the video.
To Please Your Friends, Tell Them What They Already Knew
The research emeraged out of some real-life observations shared by Gilbert and co-authors Gus Cooney and Timothy D. Wilson:“Conversation is the most common of all human social activities, and doing it well requires that we know what our conversation partners most want to hear.___67___”says psychological scientist Daniel T, Gilbert of Harvard University.
“When our friends try to tell us about movies we’ve never seen or albums we’ve never heard, we usually find ourselves bored, confused, and underwhelmed. ___68___. And yet, as soon as it’s our turn to speak, we do exactly the same thing to our friends – with exactly the same consequences. We wanted to understand why this happens.”Gilbert explains. The researchers decided to do this by conducting a series of experiments.
In their first experiment, the researchers assigned participants to groups of three, with one person acting as the speaker and the other two acting as listeners. Speakers watched a video and then tried do describe it to the listeners. Some of the listeners had seen the video the speaker was describing, and others had not.
___69___. When the speakers were done speaking, the listeners rated them on these aspects. The results showed that speakers’ predictions were exactly backwards. Speakers expected listeners to respond more positively to their stories when the listeners had not seen the video they were describing ___70___. Although speakers expected listeners to enjoy hearing about a novel experience more than a familiar one, it was actually the other way around.
A second study showed that when asked to predict their own reactions before hearing the story, listeners made the same mistake that speakers did.

Is climate change consuming your favorite foods?
Coffee: Whether or not you try to limit yourself to one cup of coffee a day, the effects of climate change on the world’s coffee-growing regions may leave you little choice. Rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall patterns are reported to have been threatening coffee plantations in coffee __31__ in South America, Africa, Asia, and Hawaii are all being threatened by rising air temperatures and unstable rainfall patterns, which invite disease and __32__ species to live on the coffee plant and ripening beans. The result? Significant cuts in coffee yield and less coffee in your cup. It is estimated that, if current climate patterns continue, half of the areas __33__ suitable for coffee production won’t be by the year 2050.
Tea: When it comes to tea, warmer climates and unstable quantity of water falling to earth aren’t only __34__ the world’s tea-growing regions, they’re also messing with its distinct flavor. For example, in India, the Indian Monsoon has brought more intense rainfall, making tea flavor weaker. Recent research coming out of the University of Southampton suggests that tea-producing areas in some places, __35__ East Africa, could decline by as much as 55 percent by 2050 as the quantity of water falling to earth and temperatures change. Tea pickers are also feeling the __36__ of climate change. During harvest season, increased air temperatures are creating an increased risk of heatstroke for field workers.
?Seafood: Climate change is affecting the world’s aquaculture as much as its agriculture. As air temperatures rise, oceans and waterways absorb some of the heat and __37__ warming of their own. The result is a decline in fish population, including in lobsters (who are cold-blooded creatures), and salmon (whose eggs find it hard to survive in higher water temperature). Warmer waters also __38__ toxic marine bacteria, like Vibrio, to grow and cause illness in humans whenever ingested with raw seafood, like oysters or sashimi.
And that __39__ “crack” you get when eating crab and lobster? It could be silenced as shellfish struggle to build their calcium (碳) carbonate shells, a result of ocean acidification (absorb carbon dioxide from the air). According to a study, scientists predicted that if over-fishing and rising temperature trends continued at their present rate, the world’s seafood __40__ would run out by the year 2050.

Hope
Nothing in my life had prepared me for what I had to do. Choosing my words carefully, and fighting to stay calm, I told my 4-year-old daughter that her grandmother had suffered a stroke(中风),that she was unconscious, and that the doctors said she would probably never wake up. As she moved closer to me, Amelia looked at me, eyes bright, and said,“Maybe Grandma will be okay.”“Maybe she will,”I said, keeping back the tears, But I knew better. I was flying up to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from our Florida home in the morning to say good-bye to my mom.
The rest of that awful week, I joined my brother and father sitting by my mother’s side in the hospital room. I held her hand and talked to her. I told her that we still needed her. I told her that it wasn’t time to leave yet. I told her how much I loved her. And I told her that her little granddaughter, Amelia, believed that she’d get better. The doctors, with all their years of training and experience, offered no hope for recovery. The damage was simply too extensive.
Then, a couple of weeks later, an odd thing happened. Mom woke up. She regained consciousness. Persevered through a long and tough recovery, during which she had to learn to walk, read, and write all over again, and eventually returned home to Dad. The only one who wasn’t shocked was Amerlia. The doctors couldn’t explain it. Amelia didn’t need to. Hope came as naturally to her as breathing.
So why are we so afraid to hope sometimes? Maybe it’s because over the year, life’s disappointments can turn us to disillusionment(理想破灭). How many times have you heard someone say:“Hope for the best, expect the worst”?That’s not really hope at all.
Hope is being able to look at our world with all of the joy and wonder of a child.

C. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be likely to continue volunteer work.
D. Individual differences in role identity is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work.
E. Although this result may not surprise you ,it leads to important practical advice.
F. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved.
Suppose you become a leader in an organization . It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization’s activities . To do so , it should help understand why people undertake volunteer word and what keeps their interest in the work.
Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer . _______67__________For example , people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness , to expand their range of experiences , and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate . To select volunteers , you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so . To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately , these programs can shift people’s wish of participating from an internal factor(e.g.,’I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external factor(e.g., ‘ I volunteer because I’m required to do so .”) . When that happens people become less likely to volunteer in the future._________68_________
Once people begin to volunteer ,what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question , researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance , one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year . One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions.____69______ the researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience.”
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role._____70_________ . Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am .” “ Consistent with the researchers “ expectations, they found a positive correlation between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results , once again , lead to concrete advice:” Once an individual begins volunteering ,continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity ---- Item like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contribution can help strengthen role identity.”
VI.Summary Writing
Do you like movies and the cinema? If the answer is yes, then you’ll love hearing that there is a 3D revolution in cinema entertainment coming.
3D technology has been around for many years. The first 3D movie shown to a paying audience can be traced down to as early as 1922. But now 3D movies are being released on a large scale. This year, some major movie studios have released 3D movies, including the blockbuster Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and animations like Up and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
But now does 3D movie technology work and why do you have to wear glasses while watching 3D movies?
The technology is actually simple. When a director is making a 3D movie, he must have it filmed by two cameras, from two slightly different angles, at the same time. Because it is filmed from different angles, if you watch the movie without the 3D glasses, it will look blurred(模糊). In the cinema, the movie is played on a special silver screen. When you watch the movie through the 3D glasses, each of your eyes sees from one of the different angles because each lens of the glasses only lets through one type of polarized light. This makes your brain think it is seeing 3D images.
Unfortunately, there are some problems with 3D movies. Because the movie has to be filmed from two different angles, the filming of 3D movies is really expensive. And, upgrading a screen to 3D and installing the projector can cost tens of thousands of dollars. So we might be waiting a while before every film is 3D, but it will be worth the wait.
