六、阅读理解
A
What do the following animals have in common? Pandas, Mexican burrowing snakes, loggerhead turtles, pink pigeons, small tooth sawfish, and Siberian sturgeons.
They are all endangered animals!
Animals become endangered for a variety of reasons. Here are the four reasons that many animals are in jeopardy:
Excessive hunting: For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks and killed tigers for their beautiful furs. While we still have elephants and tigers in the wild, we cannot say the same about many others that have simply become extinct! Foreign species: Year 1505 was a terrible turning point in the natural history of the island of Mauritius—European sailors discovered this beautiful island in the Indian Ocean and brought dogs, pigs, monkeys, and rats with them. The arrival of humans and those introduced animal species were bad news for dodo birds. About 50 pounds and flightless, dodo birds did not have any natural enemies until then. They ate fruits fallen from trees and built their nests on the ground. Shortly after humans set foot on Mauritius, however, dodo birds realized that they were in big trouble—men killed them for their meat, and those introduced animal species destroyed their nests and ate their eggs. They drove dodo birds to first become rare and then extinct. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681.
Loss of habitats: Humans and animals have always competed for land and other natural resources. We clear an area of a forest for farming. We cut down trees to build beautiful houses. At the same time that we are trying to make our life comfortable, we unintentionally destroy the habitats of wild animals.
Pollution: Pollution has a long lasting and usually has an unchanged effect. If we continue to pollute our planet Earth, our next generations will have to bear the consequences of terrible weather and polluted environment.

4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Animals in Danger B. Animals in Common
C. Protection Animals D. Don’t Kill Animals

Packing a suitcase well is a challenge. You want the clothes to look good when you take them out of the suitcase.
Travel experts suggest you put the items into the suitcase in several layers. First of all, open the suitcase and create the first layer on the bottom. Take the longer clothes, such as dresses or trousers and lay them flat, with the top part inside the suitcase and the bottom half hanging over the side. Next, place your pyjamas (睡衣裤), T-shirts and underwear (内衣) in the suitcase as the second layer. Fill any gaps with toiletries(化妆品), such as soap and shampoo, wrapped in bags to prevent spills. The third layer is for clothes that might wrinkle(起皱褶) easily, such as shirts and blouses. Fold these clothes tidily and put them into plastic bags to avoid wrinkles. Place them on top of the second layer. Next, take the legs of the trousers or the end of the dresses that you have left hanging over the edge of the suitcase and fold them back over the top of the other clothes. This will stop your dresses or trousers from getting wrinkled.
There will be some space around the edges of the suitcase for shoes. Do not pack too many: choose one pair that you can wear for most occasions. Shoes can get crushed in a suitcase, so stuff (塞满) them with socks or toiletries. Wrap the shoes in plastic bags so they will not make the clothes dirty.
If there is some space left on top, add a sweater or any other items that you might need during your journey. For example, if the weather turns cold, it will be easy for you to get your sweater without disturbing your tidy packing. Beware of packing too much into a suitcase. You might cause the locks and zippers (拉链) to break.
5. Which of the followings should be placed in the second layer according to the passage?
A. Toiletries, shampoo and longer clothes.
B. Blouses, shirts that might wrinkle easily.
C. Shoes, soap and shampoo.
D. Underwear, T-shirts and pyjamas.
6. Which of the following is the right order experts give when you are packing?
a. Put those easily wrinkled clothes into plastic bags, then place them in the suitcase.
b. Fold the left part of the longer clothes back over other layers.
c. Lay the underwear, T-shirts in the suitcase.
d. Put the longer clothes such as trousers to the suitcase.
e. Fold the clothes such as shirts and blouses tidily.
A. a-d-c-b-e B. d-c-e-a-b
C. d-e-a-b-c D. e-a-d-c-b
7. Which of the followings is TRUE when you pack your shoes in the suitcase?
A. Shoes should be put on the top of the layer.
B. Fill the shoes with socks or toiletries.
C. Wrap the shoes in the longer clothes.
D. Put the shoes in plastic bags so they won’t get crushed.
8. The writer’s main purpose of writing the passage is to ______.

Ever had a time in your life where cash hasn't been as plentiful as you'd like and you've needed to tighten the budget? We all have,
According to the World Bank, global food prices, driven in part by higher fuel costs, are 36% above their level a year ago. Food and drink are among our biggest ongoing expenses, which means it's also one of the biggest opportunities for savings.
There are changes of the way you buy and prepare food that can make a big impact on your bank account. Making significant savings on your grocery bill isn't as hard as you might think, and you can still live well. Here is how.
COOK FROM THE BEGINNING
In general, the more preparation or processing steps a food hag undergone, the higher the price. So it's best to cook things from the very beginning where possible. Even small changa can make a big cost difference. Try buying unwashed whole lettuce or salad leaves and giving them a cleaning yourself, The per-ki10?am price can be as much as ten times more for prepackaged salad leaves.
STEWNG MEAT
Supply and demand play a big role in food pricing. Food that isn't fashionable can be excellent value for money. Unfortunately, lamb chops are not as inexpensive as they once were—but there are still plenty of other options. Look for oxtail, chicken wing tip' and feet, or other organs such as livers and lungs. A quick internet search will give you a host of ideas on how to prepare unfamiliar ingredients. A good place to start is with slow cooked casseroles or stews,
BUY IN BULK
A good rule, based on experience, is that is cheaper", but larger pack sizes aren't always better value. It does pay to compare the price to make sure you really are saving-a—if you can, check the ''unit pricing", which cc—pates prices by volume and weight. And make sure you'll not end up throwing half of it out than using it by the expiry date.
TAKE A LIST
Planning ahead is great way to economize and reduce the risk of expensive impulse purchases, so make a list of what you need before you head to the supermarket. It's also a good idea not to shop while you are hungry to resist the urge to pick up unnecessary food items,
IGNORE THE LIST
Give yourself the flexibility to make the most of the supermarket specials and discounts, and to use different ingredients or change your weekly recipe plans depending on what's on sale or the best value for money on the day.
9. It can be learned from the passage that___________.
A.there may be less opportunity for you to save money when food prices are increasing greatly.
B.checking the expiry date is important when buying foods.
C.the way we prepare our food affects our expenses.
D.changing your weekly recipe plans will help you stay healthy.
10. "Buy in bulk" most probably means "___________.
A. Buy foods in large quantities B. Buy unpackaged goods Only
C.Bu y what's on sale D.Buy goods in smaller pack sizes
11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Prepackaged food is usually of high quality.
B.We had better make a plan in advance about what to buy before going to the supermarket.
C.Preparing unfamiliar ingredients usually costs your money and time.
D.We should ignore the supermarket specials and discounts to avoid being tricked.
七、阅读六选四
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. More than a quarter are in sub-Saharan Africa.
B. There are many reasons for world hunger.
C. It takes the effort of every country to fight against world hunger.
D. In those places, obesity is a far bigger problem than hunger.
E. Those places need far more food than they actually get.
F. By the end of this year, more than 35 million people will have died as a result of not having enough to eat.
In 2009, the number of hungry people in the world reached one billion for the first time. It's difficult not to be shocked by the fact that more than one in seven people in the world do not have enough to eat. 67 Hunger kills more people per year than diseases such as AIDS, malaria(疟疾)and TB (肺结核) combined.
The UN estimates that almost two thirds of the world's hungry people are in Asia, which is of course the world's most populous continent. 68 Although this region has a much lower population than Asia, it has the highest percentage of hungry people. Almost all of the rest are in Latin America, North Africa and the Caribbean. In the richest regions of the world there are only a tiny number of people who don’t have enough to eat.
69 They include wars, droughts, floods, and the over-use of farming land. All these factors affect food production. Many people also blame greedy businessmen for pushing up the prices of basic foods in the global market. But the most important reason, quite simply, is poverty, which has increased recently due to the financial crisis of 2008.
Although many people make the obvious point that there would be less hunger if the global population were smaller, few people would argue that there is not enough food to go around. The basic problem seems to be not a lack of food, but its distribution. In the last 50 years, global food production has risen even more quickly than the global population. There are many areas of the world in which people generally have more than enough food. 70 The answer to world hunger, therefore, may be a balanced food distribution around the whole world. Everyone will have enough to eat, but not overeat.

九、Summary Writing
For anyone who doubts that the texting revolution is upon us, consider this: The average 13- to 17-year-old sends and receives 3,339 texts a month—more than 100 per day, according to the Nielsen Co., the media research firm. Adults are catching up. People from ages 45 to 54 sent and received 323 texts a month in the second quarter of 2010, up 75% from a year ago, Nielsen says.?
Behind the texting explosion is a fundamental shift in how we view our mobile devices. That they are phones is increasingly beside the point.?
Part of what's driving the texting surge among adults is the popularity of social media. Sites like Twitter, with postings of no more than 140 characters, are creating and reinforcing the habit of communicating in micro-bursts.?
Economics has much to do with texting’s popularity. Text messages cost carriers less than traditional mobile voice transmissions, and so they cost users less. Sprint Nextel has reconceived its Virgin Mobile brand to cater to heavy texters in a difficult economy. For $25 per month, users get unlimited texting, email, social networking and 300 talk minutes; for another $15, they get an additional 900 talk minutes. The name of the brand’s new wireless plan: “Beyond Talk.”
Texting’s rise over conversation is changing the way we interact, social scientists and researchers say. We are now inclined to text to relay difficult information. We stare at our phone when we want to avoid eye contact. Rather than make plans in advance, we engage in what research have named “micro-coordination” --- “I’ll txt u in 10mins when I know wh/ restrnt.”
Texting saves us time, but it steals from quiet reflection. “When people have a mobile device and have even a little extra time, they will communicate with someone in their life,” says Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project.?
