The Phone Call
It was getting dark. Paul looked out of the window and sighed (叹气). Dad said he would come home by 5∶30, but it was almost 7∶00. Even if Dad came back, it wouldn’t be much fun playing 1 in the dark. Paul walked into his room and threw his baseball into the corner. He tried to do some homework but couldn’t.
The phone rang at about 8∶00. It was Dad, “Paul I’m 2 , but I couldn’t play baseball with you tonight.
I have to finish my work at the office. Maybe we can play this weekend. Oh, no. How about next weekend?…”
Paul couldn’t understand why Dad was so 3 . He threw himself into the sofa and soon fell asleep. His book was still opened to the first page.
The next day at school, Paul didn’t hand in his homework and 4 a test. Mrs Green, his teacher asked him to stay after school. “Paul, you didn’t do your homework. You didn’t pass the test and only got a D. This isn’t like you. What’s wrong?”
Paul just sat there 5 . “Paul, if you don’t want to talk, I will…I know that something’s worrying you,but you have to get it out. You need to tell someone.”
As Paul walked home, he thought of what Mrs Green said. Maybe he didn’t do his homework because he wanted to get his dad’s 6 . He knew Mrs Green was right. He decided to take her advice.
When Paul got home, he 7 his dad. But there was no answer. Then it went to voicemail (语音信箱). Paul began talking, “ Dad, I can’t play with you next weekend. I’ve got lots of problems with my
homework. Also I really don’t want to spend another day looking out of the window and waiting. Whenever you 8 our plans, Dad, it hurts me. It’s not too late to rebuild our relationship, but we have to start small. Maybe you can help me with my 9 sometime. Dad, I love you.” As Paul ended the call, he felt much relaxed. He didn’t know whether his dad would be different, but it didn’t matter. He himself 10 . He expressed his feelings to the right person. He had a clear head as he was doing his homework that evening.

Rich or poor, young or old, we all have problems. We can easily become unhappy 1 we solve our problems. 2 our problems can affect how we do things at school or at home. So how do we deal with our problems?
Most of us have probably been angry 3 our friends, parents or teachers. Perhaps they said something you didn’t like, or you felt they were unfair. Sometimes, people can stay angry for years about a small problem. Time goes by, and good friendships may 4 .
When we are angry, however, we are usually the ones affected. Have you ever seen young children playing together? But they fight very soon, and decide not to talk to each other. However, this usually doesn’t 5 for long. They become good friends again. This is an important 6 for us. We can solve a problem by learning to forget.
Many students often complain about school. They might feel they have too much work to do sometimes, or think the rules are too 7 . We must learn how to change these“problems”into“challenges(挑战)”. As young adults, it is our duty 8 our best to deal with each challenge with the help of our teachers.
By comparing yourself to other people, you will find your problems are not so 9 . Think about Stephen Hawking, for example, a very clever scientist. He can’t walk or even speak, but he regards his many physical problems as unimportant. Now he is known 10 a great scientist in the world. We are probably quite healthy and smart. Let’s not worry about our problems. Let’s face the challenges instead.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter (消防队员) 1 her father was one. 2 , when she was 14, her father died and she was never able to volunteer with him. However, she never 3 .
Now Renee works as a firefighter. Some days she must be ready to deal with any emergency (紧急情况), 4 fighting a fire or helping someone who’s sick. Other days she is in the driver’s seat. Renee works nine to
eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts (轮班).She also has a family to 5 . Her husband is a firefighter too. Dealing with family and work is not easy but she manages them well.
Renee 6 the first time she fought a fire. She was awoken early in the morning by the alarm. She said she was very nervous but did what she had to do.
When I asked what the 7 part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always 8 to do anything for anyone in need.
Fighting fires and saving lives — I think she’s amazing. Renee’s story helps 9 believe that I can do something. I hope someday to be just like her: to work hard and 10 people every day.

The bicycle is one of the simplest(最简单的) yet most useful inventions in the world. What is the 1 surprising is that it was not invented earlier, although the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci had drawn pictures for bicycles, flying machines and some other things. Those things were not produced 2 long after he died.
A person riding a bicycle uses 3 energy(能量) to make the bicycle move and there is no pollution at all. Even so,in developed(发达的) 4 ,most people don’t go to work by bicycle. It is not because bicycles are expensive or people feel 5 if they ride to work. It’s because 6 cars on the roads becomes larger. It certainly becomes 7 to ride a bicycle. As a result, more people put their bicycles away and go to work 8 their cars and,in this way,the situation(局势)is made more serious.

Last year I went to Australia to study and travel. I stayed in Sydney for two months. I visited places of 1 in the morning and took English lessons in the afternoon. A friend and I stayed with a family from Sydney. The homestay(寄宿家庭) parents and brothers were very 2 to us. We talked about a lot of things with each other in English.
My spoken English improved 3 in Australia. I used to speak very little English in China. But in Australia, I had to use it very often. I was soon able to 4 my teachers and homestay family freely.
To me, the best place in Australia is the Sydney Opera House. You can look at it from different sides. I think it is one of the most wonderful buildings in the world. I cannot sing very well, 5 when I was inside, I really wanted to sing.
Time 6 fast when I was in Sydney. Soon came Christmas, then the New Year. I had never spent the New Year 7 my family. But this year, I was so far away from them. I felt a little sad. I missed them so much, and I knew they missed me so much 8 . In the evening, I phoned my family. When I heard their 9 , I began to cry. My homestay mother held me in her arms and comforted me. 10 kind foreign mother I had!

Australia is a famous Oceanian country. The country is famous 1 its wool production and seashore tour. As the climate there is warm and comfortable, many people 2 vacations there every year. I’m a super fan of water entertainment, so I choose it as my destination(目的地).
In Australia, the sky is bluer than blue, the clouds are whiter than white, and all the local people enjoy an optimistic(乐观的)and active life. They also show their kindness and enthusiasm 3 the tourists.
The first stop should be the Sydney Opera House 4 is among the most brilliant and splendid architectures in the world. Many world-class plays are put on in it. The surface and shape of it 5 a seashell with glorious decorations inside.
Then Melbourne is a good choice 6 the next stop. In Melbourne, skin cream is a must to take with you as the sunshine may burn your skin. The most attractive thing to me is the Australia Open, which is one of 7 world-class tennis competitions. Many great players such as Roddick Federer and its local player Hewitt etc. gather to compete. It’s really a feast for the eyes.
Australia is also home to one of the most challenging and exciting surfing and diving projects. 8 we know, it is always called“a country riding on the back of sheep”. From the 9 saying, we can know something about the rich wool-production country. If you love animals, kangaroos and koalas are a good choice to you. So don’t forget Australia 10 you plan a trip.
