Arriving爄n燬ydney爋n爃is爋wn爁rom營ndia, my husband, Rashid, stayed爄n燼 hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport(护照).
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husbands name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents(文件). Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

Your house may have an effect on your figure . Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off . You can make your environment work for you instead of against you . Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights . Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating , for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food . If your home doesn’t have enough window light , get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors . Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites . In one study , people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room . Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing , while cold colors make us feel less hungry . So when it抯 time to repaint , go blue.
Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down , turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes, Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
29.The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.
A. their home comforts B. their body shape C. house buying D. healthy diets
30.A home environment in blue can help people_________.
A.digest food better B.reduce food intake C.burn more calories D.regain their appetites
31.What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A.Eat quickly. B.Play fast music. C.Use smaller spoons. D.Turn down the lights.
32.What can be a suitable title for the test?
A.Is Your House Making You Fat? B.Ways of Serving Dinner
C.Effects of Self-Consciousness D.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?

One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching(干呕)into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.
What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day cause no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is nightmare(恶梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.
Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it抯 taking part, not winning, that抯 important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.
Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone抯 eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.
I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.
33. What can we learn about the author抯 son from Paragraph 1?
A. He talked with some mothers. B. He comforted his classmates.
C. He had difficulty in sleeping. D. He suffered from stomachache.
34. Sports day is still an annul event in this school probably because __________.
A. this is an independent school B. it is a tradition of the school
C. it helps children lose weight D. children enjoy watching sports
35. What does the author think about team games?
A. They should include more stressful races.
B. They are acceptable to different children.
C. They should be abandoned at primary schools.
D. They are less fun for those who love running.

I’m Li Hua, an 18-year-old girl student in Class One, Grade Three. I’m open-minded, easy-going and enthusiastic. I think my English is good enough to communicate with foreigners and I like to make friends. I live in a beautiful apartment and luckily, my parents are glad to have a foreign student to stay with us. We have an extra room for guests. Besides, we have a private car. Most importantly, we just had a homestay American student last year.
If you accept my application to be a host family, I promise to make the foreign student feel at home and we can visit some local places of interest in our free time.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
