B
As
an
adult,
I
realized
that
I
had
no
skills,
so
I
went
to
trade
school.
I
entered
a
cabinetmaking
(家具制造)
program.
I
didn’t
think
I
would
be
good
at
building
furniture.
I’m
not
handy.
Nobody
in
my
family
is.
I
had
great
teachers,
but
making
furniture
is
hard.
There
are
so
many
steps
and
something
can
go
wrong
at
each
one.
I
couldn’t
even
get
organized.
My
toolbox
always
looked
like
a
hurricane
had
gone
through
it.
I
didn’t
fully
know
what
I
was
devoting
myself
to
at
the
beginning,
but
I
kept
going
to
class.
I
tried
to
wrap
my
brain
around
the
math.
The
projects
forced
me
to
solve
new
kinds
of
problems.
My
brain
started
to
build
new
connections.
Working
in
this
new
physical
manner
and
giving
it
100
percent
of
my
effort
had
huge
benefits
for
my
mental
health.
I
got
over
fear
of
embarrassment
and
asked
for
help
at
every
opportunity.
I
spent
that
year
truly
learning.
True
learning
is
a
humbling
(令人谦卑的)
experience,
especially
for
those
of
us
who
are
learning
a
new
set
of
skills.
I
could
understand
exactly
what
was
wrong
with
the
furniture
I
made,
but
I
couldn’t
fix
my
mistakes.
And
yet,
I
kept
trying.
And
failing.
And
failing
again.
Until
I
learned
to
fail
better.
You’re
going
to
be
bad
at
anything
when
you
start
out,
but
I
was
pretty
bad
right
to
the
end.
Even
so,
I
finished
the
program
—
with
honors,
no
less!
My
grades
were
helped
by
my
good
written
work.
Having
to
constantly
push
beyond
my
comfort
zone
has
made
me
a
more
well-rounded
person.
Maybe
most
importantly,
trade
school
gave
me
a
more
realistic
idea
of
my
strengths
and
limitations.
I’m
stronger
than
I
thought!

The
first
“mobile
phone
sidewalk
in
China”
has
appeared
at
a
scenic
spot
in
Chongqing.
The
sidewalk—3
meters
wide
and
50
meters
long—was
built
in
the
Yangrenjie
Scenic
Spot.
It
separates
pedestrians
along
two
pathways.
One
is
for
cell
phone
users
to
walk
on;
the
other
is
for
those
without
cell
phones.
A
warning
sign
shows:
Cell
phones
walk
in
this
lane
at
your
own
risk.
“In
my
mind,
these
sidewalks
help
a
lot
in
minimizing
security
risks
for
mobile
phone
addicts,”
said
Wang
Li,
a
local
resident
who
doesn’t
use
a
mobile
phone
often.
Cases
of
mobile
phone
users
being
injured
while
using
their
phones
and
ignoring
their
surroundings
have
been
reported
by
the
media.
Tourists
who
were
attracted
to
the
sidewalk
took
photos
of
it.
But
many
did
not
comply
with
the
regulation,
and
someone
even
parked
a
car
on
the
sidewalk.
Li
Zhijiang,
a
20-year-old
college
student
from
Guizhou,
regarded
the
sidewalk
as
great
progress.
“I
knew
there
were
such
sidewalks
in
Washington’s
central
business
district,
which
are
very
necessary
for
the
addicts,
especially
in
the
busy
streets,”
Li
said.
Anthony
Edwards,
a
28-year-old
actor
from
England,
was
enthusiastic,
saying
it
was
an
improvement
over
his
home
country.
However,
his
Chinese
colleague,
Xing
Xing,
thought
the
sidewalk
was
“pointless”,
but
added
a
grudging
(勉强的)
acknowledgement:
“Setting
up
special
sidewalks
could
be
a
solution
to
reducing
security
problems
in
particular
situations.
But
this
kind
of
sidewalk
is
not
a
fundamental
solution
and
could
be
an
indulgence
(嗜好)
for
mobile
phone
addicts
in
the
long
run
in
my
mind
and
this
could
even
lead
to
more
problems
in
the
future.”
With
the
increasing
popularity
of
smartphones,
more
young
people
in
China
are
glued
to
them,
a
phenomenon
that
worries
many
experts.
It
is
estimated
that
the
number
of
smartphone
users
in
China
will
be
more
than
500
million
this
year.
28.What
is
the
initial
purpose
of
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk?
A.To
avoid
being
crowded.
B.To
reduce
the
security
risks.
C.To
regulate
the
people’s
behavior.
D.To
make
it
convenient
to
walk
in
the
street.
29.What
can
be
used
to
replace
the
underlined
phrase
“comply
with”
in
paragraph
2?
A.Ignore.
B.Consider.
C.Explain.
D.Observe.
30.What
is
the
third
paragraph
mainly
talking
about?
A.The
mixed
reactions
to
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
B.The
necessity
of
building
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
C.The
problems
of
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk
in
the
future.
D.The
safety
measures
to
protect
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
31.What
do
many
experts
worry
about?
A.The
increasing
popularity
of
smartphones.
B.Cars
being
parked
on
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
C.More
young
people
being
addicted
to
cell
phones.
D.The
mobile
phone
sidewalk
being
ruined
in
the
future.
D
Hardware
in
general,
and
smartphones
in
particular,
have
become
a
huge
environmental
and
health
problem
in
the
Global
South's
landfill
sites(垃圾填埋场).
Electronic
waste(e-waste)currently
takes
up
5
percent
of
all
global
waste,
and
it
is
set
to
increase
rapidly
as
more
of
us
own
more
than
one
smartphone,
laptop
and
power
bank.
They
end
up
in
places
like
Agbogbloshie
on
the
outskirts
of
Ghana's
capital,
Accra.
It
is
the
biggest
e-waste
dump
in
the
world,
where
10,
000
informal
workers
walk
through
tons
of
abandoned
goods
as
part
of
an
informal
recycling
process.
They
risk
their
health
searching
for
the
precious
metals
that
are
found
in
abandoned
smartphones.
But
Agbogbloshie
should
not
exist.
The
Basel
Convention,
a
1989
treaty,
aims
to
prevent
developed
nations
from
unauthorized
dumping
of
e-waste
in
less
developed
countries.
The
e-waste
industry,
however,
circumvents
the
regulations
by
exporting
e-waste
labelled
as"secondhand
goods"to
poor
countries
like
Ghana,
knowing
full
well
that
it
is
heading
for
a
landfill
site.
A
recent
report
found
Agbogbloshie
contained
some
of
the
most
dangerous
chemicals.
This
is
not
surprising:
smartphones
contain
chemicals
like
mercury
(水银),
lead
and
even
arsenic(砷).
Reportedly,
one
egg
from
a
free-range
chicken
in
Agbogbloshie
contained
a
certain
chemical
which
can
cause
cancer
and
damage
the
immune
system
at
a
level
that's
about
220
times
greater
than
a
limit
set
by
the
European
Food
Safety
Authority(EFSA).
Most
worryingly,
these
poisonous
chemicals
are
free
to
pollute
the
broader
soil
and
water
system.
This
should
concern
us
all,
since
some
of
Ghana's
top
exports
are
cocoa
and
nuts.
Some
governments
have
started
to
take
responsibility
for
their
consumers'
waste.
For
example,
Germany
has
started
a
project
that
includes
a
sustainable(可持续的)recycling
system
at
Agbogbloshie,
along
with
a
health
clinic
for
workers.
However,
governments
cannot
solve
the
problem
alone,
as
there
is
an
almost
limitless
consumer
demand
for
hardware,
especially
when
governments
green
policies
are
focused
on
issues
like
climate
change.
Only
the
manufacturers
can
fix
this.
A
more
economically
sustainable
and
politically
possible
solution
is
through
encouraging
hardware
manufacturers
to
make
the
repair,
reuse
and
recycling
of
hardware
profitable,
or
at
least
cost-neutral.
32.What
can
we
infer
from
Paragraph
2?
A.
Electronic
products
need
improving
urgently.
B.
Electronic
waste
is
too
complex
to
get
fully
recycled.
C.
Electronic
waste
requires
more
landfill
sites
across
Ghana.
D.
Electronic
pollution
is
a
burning
question
in
Agbogbloshie.
33.What
does
the
underlined
word
"circumvents"
in
Paragraph
3
mean?
A.
Tightens.
B.
Abolishes.
C.
Gets
around.
D.
Brings
in.
34.What
should
be
the
biggest
concern
according
to
the
text?
A.
The
violation
of
EFSA's
standards.
B.
The
lack
of
diversity
in
Ghana's
exports.
C.
The
damage
to
chicken's
immune
system.
D.
The
threat
of
polluted
food
around
the
world.
35.What
does
the
author
think
is
the
best
solution
to
the
e-waste
problem?
A.
Manufacturers'
developing
a
sustainable
hardware
economy.
B.
Governments'
adjusting
their
green
policies
about
e-waste.
C.
Reducing
customers
'demands
for
electronic
products.
D.
Letting
governments
take
on
the
main
responsibility.

in
money
and
fame,
chances
are
that
you
are
never
going
to
truly
feel
successful.
38.
And
it
is
not
enough
to
maintain
a
long-term
feeling
of
fulfillment
and
happiness.
For
a
truly
successful
life,
your
intention
has
to
be
rooted
in
your
purpose,
in
your
passions
and
in
what
feels
good
to
you.
When
your
intention
is
to
serve
your
purpose
and
express
your
talents,
you
will
feel
true
success
and
satisfaction.
Realize
you
are
already
successful.
39.
The
more
you
can
welcome
that
into
your
life,
the
more
you
will
start
to
feel
it.
Being
grateful
for
the
tiniest
successes
in
life
will
also
help
you
to
create
more
and
more
success.
This
is
a
powerful
mindset
shift.
It
will
help
you
to
be
with
your
ambitions
and
dreams.
40.
A.Have
faith
in
yourself.
B.Success
is
always
after
the
rain
and
wind.
C.Success
is
all
around
you
and
flows
through
you.
D.Once
you
realize
this,
there
is
no
stopping
what
you
can
do.
E.
Success
is
about
being
able
to
live
a
happy
and
satisfactory
life.
F.
Thanking
for
the
biggest
failure
will
help
you
achieve
greater
success.
G.
The
feeling
of
success
that
is
given
through
money
and
fame
is
only
temporary.

The
big
Town

clock
was
striking
midnight
when
Frank
began
to
cross
the
bridge.The
dark
night
air
was
cold
and
a
little
wet,
and
the
street
lamp
gave
little
light.Frank
was
anxious
to
get
home
and
his
footsteps
rang
loudly
on
the
silent
night.
When
he
reached
the
middle
of
the
bridge,
he
thought
he
could
hear
someone
coming
near
behind
him.He
looked
back
but
could
see
no
one.However
,
the
sound
continued
and
Frank
began
to
walk
more
quickly.Then
he
slowed
down
again
,
thinking
there
was
nothing
to
fear
in
a
town
as
quiet
as
this.
Just
then
,
he
heard
short
,
quick
steps
closely
behind
him.By
the
time
he
reached
the
other
side
of
the
bridge
,
he
could
almost
feel
someone
at
his
heels.He
turned
round
and
there
stood
a
man
in
a
large
coat.A
hat
was
pulled
down
over
his
eyes
and
very
little
of
his
face
could
be
seen.
Frank
said
something
about
the
weather
in
an
effort
to
be
friendly.The
man
did
not
answer
but
asked
roughly
where
Oakfield
House
was.Frank
pointed
to
a
big
house
in
the
distance
and
the
stranger
continued
his
way.
Then
Frank
wondered
why
the
stranger
had
wanted
to
find
Oakfield
House
at
such
an
hour.He
knew
that
the
people
who
lived
there
were
very
rich.Almost
without
realizing
what
he
was
doing
,
he
began
following
the
stranger
quickly.
The
man
was
soon
outside
the
house
and
Frank
saw
him
look
up
at
the
windows.A
light
was
still
on
and
the
man
waited
until
it
went
out.When
about
half
an
hour
had
passed
,
Frank
saw
him
climb
noiselessly
over
the
wall
and
heard
him
drop
on
the
ground
at
the
other
side.

第一节
Dear
Mike,
Having
got
the
book
you
sent
to
me,
I
can’t
help
writing
this
letter
to
express
my
happiness
and
gratitude
to
you.
This
book,
The
Old
Man
and
the
Sea,
enjoys
great
popularity
around
the
world.
It’s
of
great
use
for
me
to
read
such
a
masterpiece.
I
hope
your
Chinese
has
got
a
breakthrough
these
days.
In
my
opinion,
to
learn
a
language
is
to
learn
its
culture.
I
will
send
you
a
book
whose
name
is
Dream
of
the
Red
Mansion.
After
reading
this
book,
I
think
you
will
be
a
Chinese
expert.
Keep
fighting
and
keep
in
contact.
Yours
sincerely,
Li

It

Would
the
man
have
a

Would
he
be
strong

him
before

Frank’s
heart

He

he
silently

W:Which

are
you

in?
M:I
think
it
is
Chinese

It
is
not
because
the
subject
is
boring,but
because
the

Just
go
straight
down
the

until
you
get
to
the

Turn
right
and
you

I

M:I
am

everyone
uses
paper

W:Yes.
But
we
used
a
lot
of
materials
made
from
plastic
a
few
years
ago.
M:In
the
States,
we
have
used
paper
plates
and
cups
for
years,
because
we’re
concerned
about
the
growing
pollution
problem.
W:People
here
also

about

Now

M:OK!
But

W:Yes,
I

M:Did
you
get
a

from
the

W:I

so.
But
I
can’t

these

they

M:Let

Here’s
your

Have
you

for
the

you
are
going
to
take
this

on
the

W:Yes,
I
did
it
last
week
at
home.
M:OK.
What
you
have
to
do
now
is
to
get
the
class
list.
If
it
shows
all
the

you
take
this

correctly,
then
it
won’t

M:That’s

I

How
did
you
find

W:I
saw
a

notice
stuck
on
a
light
pole
near
the
bus
stop.
I
phoned
the
number
and
I
got

It’s
not
too
hard
to
find
a

these

But
Mike,
study
should
always
come
first.
Do
you
think
that
you
have
enough
time
to
do
a
part-time
job?
M:It’s
hard
to
say.
If
I
can
get
a
job,
it
will
be
very
hard
to
make
good
use
of
my
time.
W:Your
spoken
English
is
perfect.Why
don’t
you
find
a
job
of
teaching
English?
M:But
I
don’t
have
any
teaching
experience.
Speaking
and
teaching
are
two
different
things.
W:I
don’t
have
any
experience
either.
We’re
just
students.
People
know
this.
But
we
are
young
and
energetic.
M:OK!
where
should
I
start?
W:You
can
post
some
notices
on
the
community
bulletin
board
or
other
places.
But
remember,
don’t
post
them
on
the
light
pole
because
you’ll
probably
be
fined.
