It was a cold morning, and Eduardo Ortega was nervous. He held a large envelope. In it was his dream.
“This is everything," he said. "I've worked for this since I was a young boy.”
Eduardo remembered the long hours working in the fields, picking strawberries and beans. After the workday, his tired friends drank coffee or slept. Eduardo studied, read, and wrote poetry and short stories. Although he missed many classes, he became the school’s best student.
One school year, Eduardo wrote an essay(文章)and won a prize---a flying trip to San Francisco. As he flew, he felt free from his life o? hard work in the fields. He promised himself not to return to that life. He loved to fly.
This morning, Eduardo caught the school bus and went to school with the envelope. He walked past his classmates and sat down at his desk. He opened the envelope and began reading the letter inside. It was the answer to his application to the state university. It was also the answer to the beginning of his dream of becoming a pilot.
Even though Eduardo worked to help his family, his father always encouraged him to go to school. So, while he worked, he also studied.
Eduardo knew that his dream was his father's dream, too. His father was a smart man, but he was too poor to go to college. He loved to read, but never had time, because he worked long hours.
Now, as Eduardo read the words, “Congratulations...you have been accepted,“ he knew that his dream was not lost. One day, he would be a pilot, flying every day to all the exciting places in the world.
24.What did Eduardo do when his friends drank coffee or slept?
A. He attended classes. B. He studied and wrote.
C. He worked in the fields. D. He helped around his home.
25.What was Eduardo's dream?
A. Becoming a pilot. B. Becoming a writer.
C. Traveling around the world. D. Realizing his father's dream.
26.What was Eduardo's father's attitude toward his dream?
A. Supportive. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
27.What was in the envelope?
A. An invitation to a flying trip. B. Encouragement from his father.
C. Congratulations from his friends. D. An admission notice from a university.

I visited Elba last June, joining Mary and John on a bicycling vacation. They made the arrangements for the car, hotel and bicycles. I studied the history of the island, which of course particularly features Napoleon.
Napoleon(now I know) picked Elba as a place for peace when he was forced to give up the throne (王权)as Emperor of France in 1814. Far from being a prison island, Elba is beautiful with towering mountains, thick forests and sweeping bays and beaches.
It is also an island filled with treasure. Very early on this island, locals discovered rich deposits of iron. Soon outsiders, too, discovered the iron and 150 other valuable minerals on this little piece of land. Long before Etruscans and other Greeks set foot on it, Dorians had moved in by the tenth century B. C. and were mining the island. The Romans ruled next) obtaining the minerals and building grand houses overlooking the sea. From the twelfth century until the nineteenth, the island was traded back and forth and was passed to France in 1802. Then came Napoleon, the new ruler of Elba.
I was eager to visit his house in Portoferraio. The Emperor lived with his court and his mother, but his wife, Marie Louise had ensconced herself in the splendid Viennese palace of her father, Emperor of Austria. She lived safely there and showed little interest in visiting her husband in his mini-kingdom. Apparently, Napoleon wasn't troubled much by this. He was too busy riding everywhere on horseback, building roads, modernizing agriculture and, above all, sharpening his tiny army and navy into readiness for his escape.
In the formal gardens behind the house it seemed to me that I could imagine the exiled (流放的)conqueror's anxious thoughts. He might gaze over where I stood now, toward the lighthouse of the Stella fort, the sandy bay, and across it, the green mountains of the Tuscan coast. Napoleon spent only ten months here before making his victorious return to France and the throne.
28.What did the author do for the visit to Elba?
A. He did research on its past. B. He arranged transportation.
C. He planned bicycling routes. D. He booked accommodation.
29.Who might be the earliest outsiders to Elba according to the text?
A. Napoleon and his army. B. Etruscans and other Greeks.
C. Dorians. D. Romans.
30.What does the underlined word “ensconced" probably mean?
A. Settled. B. Locked. C. Cured. D. Controlled.
31.What came to the author's mind during his visit to Napoleon's gardens?
A. Beautiful views on Elba. B. Terrible living conditions on Elba.
C. Napoleon's ambition to regain power. D. Hardship of Napoleon's return to France.

British parents encourage their children to play musical instruments as part of a family tradition and not to raise their social status as Americans do, research says.
Dr. Aaron Reeves of the University of Oxford found that UK parents did not see musical achievement by their children as character building or useful in getting university places or jobs. Instead, it was usually only those parents who played instruments that encouraged their children to follow suit.
This contrasted with research carried out by other academics in America, he said. "Middle-class parents in the US appear to associate cultural practice with other benefits , such as developing specific characteristics and paving the way for educational success. Middle-class families are often marked by a pattern of ‘ concerted cultivation’, where parents organize music-centred activities for their children, often in addition to school-based musical practice."
Researchers had owed this to "parental anxiety over the declining (衰退)fortunes of educated Americans. These parents have become increasingly worried about providing their children with skills and abilities enabling them to stand out from their competitors in the job market.”
By contrast, for British respondents, no such connection was made between what is considered as an overbearing parenting style and future educational or career possibilities. The parents interviewed here did not connect music with usefulness but rather they focused on the value of music as a family tradition and, to a lesser extent, as something valuable in its own right.
One Scottish parent, a chemist by profession, said during the interviews, "We've got two learning musical instruments. If we think it's maybe worthwhile we try and encourage them, but we wouldn't force them." A housewife said, “My son's just turned five and I want him to do the guitar because his uncle does it, but it's up to him.”
In some UK families, said Dr. Reeves, music was even “believed to be an obstacle (障碍; 干扰)to educational success, or at least secondary to it.”
32.What do British parents think of music learning?
A. Useful for job application. B. Helpful for character building.
C. Beneficial to further education. D. Worthwhile as a family tradition.
33.What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Cultural practice. B. Educational success.
C. Concerted cultivation. D. School-based musical practice.
34,What can be inferred from the text?
A. The future of American kids is not promising.
B. American parents hardly link music with success.
C. Music learning is a personal choice for British kids.
D. British parents show little concern about education.
