Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.
I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn抰 only funny; it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.
The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren抰 jealous of him.
In short, we don抰 laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person抯 emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.
What did the author find out after studying psychology?
A. Only good jokes make people laugh. B. Laughter can make people healthy.
C. Funny things can make people laugh. D. Many factors lead to people laughing.
Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?
A. They played a trick on the pedestrians. B. The pedestrians behaved in a funny way.
C. Their emotion was approved of by the show. D. They could feel the pedestrians happiness.
What does the underlined word 揵elittling probably mean?
Praise. B. Blame. C. Make up to. D. Look down on.
B
Money with no strings attached. It抯 not something you see every day. But at Union Station in Los Angeles last month, a board went up with dollar bills attached to it with pins and a sign that read, "Give What You Can, Take What You Need."
People quickly caught on. And while many took dollars, many others pinned their own cash to the board. 揚eople of all ages, races, and social-economic (社会经济的)backgrounds gave and took, ”said Tyler Bridges of The Toolbox, which created the project. "We even had a bride in her wedding dress come up to the board and take a few dollars." Most of the bills on the board were singles, but a few people left fives, tens and even twenties. The video clip(片段)shows one man who had found a $ 20 bill pinning it to the board.
“What I can say for the folks that gave the most, is that they were full of smiles,” Bridges said. “There’s a certain feeling that giving can do for you and that was apparent in those that gave the most." Most people who took dollars took only a few, but Bridges said a very small number took as much as they could.
While the clip might look like part of a new ad campaign, Bridges said the only goal was to show generosity and sympathy. He added that he hopes people in other cities might try similar projects and post their own videos on the Internet.
揂fter all, everyone has bad days and good days," he said. 揝ome days you need a helping hand and some days you can be the one giving the helping hand.
24. What does the expression "money with no strings attached" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Money spent without hesitation. B. Money not legally made.
C. Money offered without conditions. D. Money not tied together.
25. What did Bridges want to show by mentioning the bride?
A. Women tended to be more sociable. B. The activity attracted various people.
C. Economic problems were getting worse. D. Young couples needed financial assistance.
26. Why did Bridges carry out the project?
A. To do a test on people抯 morals. B. To raise money for his company.
C. To earn himself a good reputation. D. To promote kindness and sympathy.

Before the end of the year, workers at Ubiquitous Energy, a company in Redwood City, Calif, will gather in a window-lined conference room to stare toward the future. That抯 because their new glass windows will offer more than an amazing view of the North California sights. They will also be able to power the company抯 lights, computers and air conditioners.
Several years in the making, Ubiquitous’ energy-producing glass is a remarkable technological achievement. Its power lies in the layers of organic polymers (聚合物) between sheets of glass. As light enters the window, the flow between the polymer layers creates electricity which is then collected by tiny wires in the glass.
“It’s sort of like a computer display run in reverse (反过来),” says Veeral Hardev, director of business development at Ubiquitous Energy. “Instead of electricity being sent to different points in a display to light them up, light is producing electricity to be sent out of different points in the window.
Right now the windows produce about a third as much electricity from a given amount of sunlight as the typical solar cells used in roof panels (板).These windows, about half as transparent(透明的) as ordinary glass, don’t work as well as transparent ones. Hardev says the company is likely to improve the transparency (透明度)greatly. As for the lower output of electricity, he notes that windows can cover a much greater surface area than a roof, so lots of windows will produce a surprisingly larger amount of electricity than the production from a rooftop full of higher-efficiency solar panels. 揧ou could do both. says Hardev. 揃ut you抣l get more from the windows. The biggest challenge, he adds, is increasing the windows from less than two square feet now to about 50 square feet.
27. What makes the new glass windows special?
A. They can offer an amazing view. B. They are controlled by computers.
C. They can power the conference room. D. They can help stare toward the future.
28. What is Hardev trying to explain in Paragraph 3?
A. The source of light.
B. The significance of different points.
C. The similarity of computer and glass.
D. The working principle of electricity-producing glass.
29. What can affect power production according to the passage?
A. The transparency of the glass.
B. The quality of the rooftop.
C. The height of the solar panels.
D. The thickness of the glass.
30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Windows: A New Challenge of Technology
B. Windows: No Longer Just for Letting in the Light
C. Power: A Pressing Problem in the Near Future
D. Power: Not Enough from Rooftop Solar Panels

D
揥hy do we have to learn all this boring stuff?.
Of all the complaints and questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom, this was the one most frequently asked. I would answer it by telling the following story.
One night a group of nomads (游牧民) were preparing to retire for the evening when suddenly they were surrounded by a great light. They knew they were in the presence of a god. With great expectation, they waited for a heavenly message of great importance that they knew must be especially for them.
Finally, the voice spoke, “Gather as many pebbles (鹅卵石) as you can. Put them in your hags. Travel a day’s journey and tomorrow night will find you glad and it will find you sad.”
The nomads shared their disappointment and anger with each other. They had expected the inspiration of a great universal truth that would enable them to create wealth, health and purpose for the world. But instead they were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. However, the memory of the light of their visitor caused each one to pick up a few pebbles and store them in their bags while voicing their displeasure.
They traveled a day's journey and that night while making camp, they reached into bags and discovered every pebble they had gathered had become a diamond. They were glad they had diamonds. They were sad they had not gathered more pebbles.
It was an experience I had with a student, whom I shall call Alan, early in my teaching career that showed the truth of that story to me.
When Alan was in the eighth grade, he majored in 搕rouble. He had studied how to be a bully and was getting his master's degree in 搕hief.
Every day I had my students memorize a quotation(语录) from a great thinker. As I began the class, I would begin a quotation. To be counted present, the student would be expected to finish the thought.
“Alice Adams--‘here is no failure except…”
“‘In no longer trying.’I' m present, Mr. Schlatter.”
So, by the end of the year, my young pupils would have memorized 150 great thoughts.
“People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
“No pains, no gains.”
“If you can conceive(想出) it, and believe it, you can achieve it.”
No one complained about this daily routine other than Alan-right up to the day he was expelled (开除) and I lost touch with him for five years. Then one day, he called. He was in a special program at one of the neighboring colleges and had just finished parole (假释).
He told me that after being sent to juvenile hall (少管所) and finally being shipped off to the California Youth Authority for his wrong doings, he had become so ashamed of himself that he had taken a knife and cut his wrists.
He said, 揧ou know what, Mr. Schlatter, as I lay there with my life running out of my body, I suddenly remembered that quote you made me write 20 times one day, 揟here is no failure except in no longer trying. Then it suddenly made sense to me. As long as I was alive, I wasn’t a failure, but if I allowed myself to die, I would most certainly die a failure. So with my remaining strength, I called for help and started a new life.”
At the time he had heard the quotation, it was a pebble. When he needed guidance in a moment of crisis, it had become a diamond. And so it is to you I say, gather all the pebbles you can, and you can count on a future filled with diamonds.
What does the underlined sentence 搃t will find you sad mean?
A. The nomads regretted not having gathered as many pebbles as possible.
B. The God told the nomads to gather pebbles that made no sense to them.
C. The God didn抰 give the nomads the message they expected.
D. The pebbles won't enable the nomads to create fortune.
32. Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage?
A. It was the strong faith of never dying a failure that saved Alan s life.
B. Not all the nomads gathered and stored some pebbles in their bags.
C. Students who finished the half-sentence quotation were counted present.
D. All students don抰 like the daily routine of finishing the half-sentence quotation.
33. Why did Alan kill himself after being shipped off to the California Youth Authority?
A. He hated the hard life in the juvenile hall.
B. He was expelled by the school in the end.
C. He was badly treated at the California Youth Authority.
D. He felt so disappointed and hopeless about himself and his future.
34. According to the passage, we can conclude that Mr. Schlatter is an educator of ______.
A. sympathy and kindness B. generosity and creativity
C. wisdom and patience D. faith and devotion
35. Which of the following may probably be the best title?
A. A naughty trouble-marker. B. The magic pebble.
C. A quotation that was useful. D. Pebbles and nomads.

The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes We decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 36 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 37 As the quality of Risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and can survive from the skill.
So why aren抰 we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. 38
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 39 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
40 For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we抣l continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A.It all depends on your character.
B.Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C.Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D.Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E.This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F.However, we are not all using the same standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G.New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

Mei Mei frowned(皱眉) as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
揗oving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now? Mei Mei whispered, mostly to herself.
揥hat's that? Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok.
揘othing, Mei Mei answered. The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the opening of her new resturant, Mei Mei's parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Mei's age. As she filled their glasses, Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei put her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mei Mei's mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
揌oney, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers.
