In some parts of Holland the land lies so low that the people have to buildgreat walls of sand and earth,to keep out the sea. These walls are called dykes(堤坝)。Sometimes the water from the sea break down these walls, and then the searushes in through the beach, and spreads over the land.Houses and trees, cows and sheep, have been thus washed away, and manypeople drowned(溺水)。
Once, when a little boy was going home in the evening,he saw a hole in one
of the dykes, through which the water was flowing(流出)。His father had often told him that when this happened, unless the water was stopped it would soon make the hole so big that the sea would flow over the land.At first he thought he would run home and tell his father. But then he said to himself,"It may be dark before father can come, and we shall not be able to find the hole again. Or it may get so large that it will be too late to stop it. 个人幸福感
Why do some people seem to be naturally happier than others? Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have known the answer according to their recent study.Nine hundred twins took part in it.Researchers watched them and measured(测量)their happiness levels. The result shows that our genes(基因)control half of the personalities that make us happy. And the other half has to do with lifestyle, career and relationships. That is to say, personal differences in happiness are based on genetic differences between people."All human beings naturally expect happiness. We have found that happiness is partly from genes," said Dr. Alexander Weiss, the leader of the research."This study is both a milestone(里程碑)and a new beginning. We say this because we are now sure that there is a genetic side of happiness and the happy genes have just been found."However, genes are not the whole story. The environment can also influence our happiness levels. In fact, our happiness directly depends on whatever is taking place in our lives. So finding the right things that influence us is the right thing. To become truly happy,we need to perfectly understand our important needs.Unhappiness might happen if we fail to satisfy our needs. Besides, doing simple things, such as keeping a journal and writing down three things that we are thankful for every day,can increase our long-term happiness. Will you try it tonight?

如何应对突发事件
Not everything happens as we expect.41Running into the person youcanceled a date with-while you 're on another date.Realizing you hit “reply all”on an e-mail that you'd do anything to have back. Earthquakes, medical emer-gencies-whatever the situation, the first thing you probably do is panicking(恐慌)。Everybody does. It is hard for us to remember things at the moment.42 At the moment,we're anything but at our best. These normal human reactions can be changed. Box breathing, belly breathing,or other things-you can leam these skills in minutes. Once you calm down, you'll find out correctly what the problem is really about.43Doing thethinking ahead of time also helps you come up with the solution when it's showtime.Performing in a crisis is becoming more important for all of us,for two reasons. Back in the old days, the reliability(可靠性) of most anything we used or did was far less than it is today.44 Unless we practice what hardly ever happens, our ability to respond when it does happen tends to slip away. Reliability can kill you. Also, the systems we use today are more complex(复杂的)。45 So,terrible situations can "come out of nowhere".As technology becomes part of most everything, and as once-large risks
break into countless small ones,we should all learm to breathe, recognize the situation, and work on the plan that we were smart enough to prepare well in advance.
根据短文内容,将下面方框内的句子还原到文中空白处,使短文内容完整、通顺,每个选项只能用一次。(5分)
A. We all experience unexpected moments.
B. We can be told something, but soon we'll forget.
C. No practice always causes us to judge problems in wrong ways.
D. There are seldom moving parts that allow us to see clearly when things will go wrong.
E. Now consider what happens to our preparedness as the chance of something
has happened reduces.
