Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his school team, I was feeling sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity (困境) on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment — it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was trailing (落后) for three quarters of the game. As for me, I had just been dismissed (解雇) from my job earlier in that day.
During the drive home, I kept telling myself that I would find work again in a short time I was always confident in my experience and abilities, but self-doubt was still sticking its foot in the door.
The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan抯 team still trailing. I saw the determination on his face as well as his teammates as they fought back to not only tie the game, but then go ahead by three points. Then, a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to make the game tied again. With the tied scores and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball and with skill and confidence, he made the basket with a defender hanging all over him. The other player was called for a foul (犯规).
As Nathan stood preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points, I saw the focus and determination on his face, with no room for self-doubt. Nathan was able to tune out all the distractions and nail the free throw with such skill, as if he had done it a thousand times.
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me that I had taught him perseverance (毅力) in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment, we both won.
14. What did the author estimate his son抯 team would be like at first?
A. The team would finally win.
B. The team would lose at away court.
C. The team would lose at home court.
D. The team would tie with the opponents.
15. What does the underlined phrase 搕une out in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Avoid. B. Focus. C. Create. D. Receive.
16. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. My son would win in the finals and I would find a job soon.
B. I had once taught my son face to face that we should never give up.
C. It was my encouragement and help that made my son win the game.
D. I would become more confident about my future after this experience.
17. What is the best title for the text?
A. Life Goes Just Like Playing Basketball.
B. It Matters Whether to Win or Lose.
C. A Lesson in Life and Basketball.
D. A Moment of Self-doubt.
C
What抯 the point in dining out when we can have whatever meal we want delivered to our homes as we watch movies on our giant flat-screen TV? According to statistics from Technomic, 86% of consumers are using off-premise (非经营现场的) channels at least once a month, and a third of consumers are using it more than they did a year ago.
Most restaurants companies are chasing these trends simply to keep up with quickly changing consumer demands. Fazoli抯 has spent the past two years investing in its drive-through, carry-out, catering and delivery businesses, and has launched a new loyalty app aimed at making carry-out orders easier. These efforts have paid off so far off-premise sales are up 18.5% over last year for the company, said Jennifer Crawford, director of off-premise sales at Fazoli抯.
But, she noted that sales aren抰 the only benefit to giving priority to these channels. 揟he off-premise channel is a great opportunity to communicate and connect with a new consumer group, Crawford said. 揗any of our off-premise guests have not dined in a Fazoli抯 or experienced our menu. With options like third-party delivery and online ordering, we have the capability to tap into potential new guests.
Sales lifts and new customer potential are great rewards, to be sure. But that doesn抰 mean carrying out off-premise channels comes without challenges. Crawford said a big one is the lack of control and maintaining the guest relationship. 揥hen a guest dines in, we can provide a level of service that improves the consumer dining experience, she said. The lack of control extends into the digital experience, as third-party apps can also be an issue. 揙rders are not often processed properly due to the drop-down (下拉式) menus and default (默认) orders in third-party software,” Crawford said. She added that staffing issues can also arise when heavy delivery periods overlap restaurant busy hours and maintaining food quality and integrity (完好) during delivery time is tricky for certain dishes.
Nevertheless, Crawford believed the juice is very much worth the squeeze. 揂cross the industry, dine-in traffic continues to decline or remain flat. If brands are not driving sales through catering, carry-out and delivery, they are missing out on income, she said.
18. Why does Fazoli抯 invest in off-premise channels?
A. Because it wants to lead the latest changes.
B. Because it wants to see the potential of its consumers.
C. Because it wants to survive in the changing consumer trend.
D. Because it wants to communicate and connect with its new consumers.
19. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. It is challenging to maintain quality and integrity of dishes during delivery.
B. Third-party apps cannot offer as good an experience of ordering as restaurants.
C. Third-party apps may get out of control when consumers experience online ordering.
D. During heavy delivery periods, more staff is always needed to deal with busy dine-in traffic.
20. What is Crawford s attitude towards off-premise channels?
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Ambiguous. D. Cautious.
21. What is the text mainly about?
A. What challenges off-premise channels create.
B. Why restaurants are prioritizing off-premise channels.
C. How important off-premise channels are for restaurant.
D. How restaurants are adapting to the rise of delivery business.
D
The worst outbreak of desert locusts (蝗虫) in decades is presently underway in the Horn of Africa. It is the biggest of its kind in 25 years for Ethiopia and Somalia — and the worst Kenya has seen for 70 years.
What we are seeing in East Africa today is unlike anything we’ve seen in a very long time. Its destructive potential is enormous, and it’s taking place in a region where farmers need every gram of food to feed themselves and their families. Most of the countries hardest hit are those where millions of people are already vulnerable (脆弱的) or in serious humanitarian need, as they endure the impact of violence, drought, and floods.
We have acted quickly to respond to this outbreak. The primary method of battling locusts is the aerial spraying of pesticides (杀虫剂). FAO’s “Locust Watch” service explains that 揳lthough giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers, and huge vacuums have been proposed in the past, these are not useful for locust control. People and birds often eat locusts but usually not enough to significantly reduce population levels in large areas.
The UN抯 Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has released $10 million from its Central Emergency Relief Fund to support a huge scale-up in aerial operations (空中作业) to manage the outbreak.
But the window to contain this crisis is closing fast. Before the beginning of March we must bring this infestation (虫害) under control as that is when the rain and planting season begins. If left unchecked (未受制止的) — and with expected additional rains the number of locusts in East Africa could increase 500 times by June.
We must act now to avoid a full-blown catastrophe. And we will. At the same time, we need to pay attention to a bigger picture. This is not the first time the Greater Horn of Africa has seen locust outbreak approach this scale, but the current situation is the worst in decades. This is linked to climate change. Warmer seas mean more tropical storms, generating the perfect breeding conditions for locusts.
22. What is implied in paragraph 2?
A. People in East Africa are suffering droughts.
B. People in East Africa are going through floods.
C. The locust outbreak will cause crop failure.
D. The locust outbreak is worsening locals life.
23. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We need a bigger picture to study the disaster.
B. It is the second outbreak of locusts in East Africa.
C. It is the largest outbreak of locusts ever in history.
D. The outbreak of locusts is fueled by global warming.
24. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To analyze and compare.
B. To inform and call for action.
C. To argue and discuss.
D. To introduce and assess.
25. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A guidebook. B. A health magazine.
C. A news report. D. A chemistry paper.

第二节 书面表达2(满分20分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams and the great speed of modern life, but behavior on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver抯 seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to hit back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarreling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behavior of politeness is by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don抰 even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A Typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages (堵塞) that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take (互谅互让) from all road users. It is high time we took this message to heart.

第二节 书面表达2
Road manners are getting worse. Civilized driving is not only about polite behavior but requires sensible judgment to identify/recognize it, which is ignored by many drivers. Besides, inappropriate politeness can sometimes put road users in danger. Therefore, with the increased car ownership, modern drivers who lack the driving skills and proper roadmanship should bear give-and-take in mind. (57)
