I
used
to
hate
waiting
in
line,
thinking
of
it
as
a
big
waste
of
time
and
a
test
on
my
patience,
___1___
after
living
in
Israel
for
three
years,
I
have
changed
my
attitude
toward
it.
Probably
because
the
country
is
not
very
big,
with
limited
resources,
___2___
you’re
at
the
bank,
the
post
office
or
the
bus
stop,
you’ll
always
find
a
straight
line
of
people
waiting.
But
instead

____3____
are

___4___
seemed

taking
the
chance
to
relax.
Gradually
I
came
to
realize
that
___5___
(obey)
rules,
which
can
be
clearly
seen
in
queuing
up,
is
an
important
part
of
their
culture.
Once
I
saw
a
young
foreigner
trying
to
jump
the
queue
and
be
shouted
at
by
an
old
Israeli
man,
with
others
joining
in.
The
poor
guy
was
so
ashamed
___6___
he

he
could.
But
don’t
think
Israeli
people
are
cruel.
If
you
have
to
leave

a
short
time,
___7___
the
person
behind
you
agrees,
you
can
always
come
back
and
stand
in
front
of
him
or
her.
However,
if
you
miss
him
or
her,
you’ll
have
to
start
over.
If
you
wait
next
to
the
basketball
court
or
tennis
court
for
more
than
five
minutes,
someone
on
the
court
will
definitely
offer
___8___(exchange)
places
with
you.
This
has
become
part
of
the
culture
in
Israel.
Their
culture
___9___
(reflect)
Israelis’
belief
in
equal
opportunities,
which
may
have
played
a
role
in
helping
Israel
to
stay
on
its
feet
in
the
world
even
after
the
cruel
Holocaust.
Compared
____10____
Israel,
our
way
of
queuing
up
is
much
more
casual.
People
always
go

Culture
can
affect
not
just
language
and
customs,
but
also
how
people
experience
the
world
on
surprisingly
basic
levels.
Researchers,
with
the
help
of
brain
scans,
have
uncovered
shocking
differences
in
perception(感知)
between
Westerners
and
Asians,
what
they
see
when
they
look
at
a
city
street,
for
example,
or
even
how
they
perceive
a
simple
line
in
a
square,
according
to
findings
published
in
a
leading
science
journal
In
western
countries,
culture
makes
people
think
of
themselves
as
highly
independent
entities(实体)
.When
looking
at
scenes,
Westerners
tend
to
focus
more
on
central
objects
than
on
their
surroundings.
East
Asian
cultures,
however
emphasize
inter-dependence.
When
Easterners
look
at
a
scene,
they
tend
to
focus
on
surroundings
as
well
as
the
object.
Using
an
experiment
involving
two
tasks,
Dr
Hedden
asked
subjects
to
look
at
a
line
simply
to
estimate
its
length,
a
task
that
is
played
to
American
strengths.
In
another,
they
estimated
the
line's
length
relative
to
the
size
of
a
square,
an
easier
task
for
the
Asians.
The
level
of
brain
activity,
by
tracking
blood
flow,
was
then
measured
by
Brain
Scanners.
The
experiment
found
that
although
there
was
no
difference
in
performance,
and
the
tasks
were
very
easy,
the
levels
of
activity
in
the
subjects’
brains
were
different.
For
the
Americans,
areas
linked
to
attention
lit
up
more,
when
they
worked
on
the
task
they
tended
to
find
more
difficult--estimating
the
line's
size
relative
to
the
square.
For
the
Asians,
the
attention
areas
lit
up
more
during
the
harder
task
also--estimating
the
line's
length
without
comparing
it
to
the
square.
The
findings
are
a
reflection
of
more
than
ten
years
of
previous
experimental
research
into
east-west
differences
In
one
study,
for
instance,
researchers
offered
people
a
choice
among
five
pens,
four
red
and
one
green.
Easterners
were
more
likely
to
choose
a
red
pen
while
Westerners
were
more
likely
to
choose
the
green
one.
Culture
is
not
affecting
how
you
see
the
world,
but
how
you
choose
to
understand
and
internalize(使内化)
it.
But
such
habits
can
be
changed.
Some
psychological
studies
suggest
that
when
an
Easterner
goes
to
the
West
or
vice
versa,
habits
of
thought
and
perception
also
begin
to
change.
Such
research
gives
us
clues
on
how
our
brain
works
and
is
hopeful
for
us
to
develop
programs
to
improve
our
memory,
memory
techniques
and
enhance
and
accelerate
our
learning
skills.

I
used
to
hate
waiting
in
line,
thinking
of
it
as
a
big
waste
of
time
and
a
test
on
my
patience,
___1___
after
living
in
Israel
for
three
years,
I
have
changed
my
attitude
toward
it.
Probably
because
the
country
is
not
very
big,
with
limited
resources,
___2___
you’re
at
the
bank,
the
post
office
or
the
bus
stop,
you’ll
always
find
a
straight
line
of
people
waiting.
But
instead
of
worrying
or
hurrying
some
are
drinking
hot
coffee;
____3____
are
chatting
to
each
other,
even
though
a
minute
ago
they
were
just
strangers.
___4___
seemed
to
me
that
they
were
enjoying
queuing
and
taking
the
chance
to
relax.
Gradually
I
came
to
realize
that
___5___
(obey)
rules,
which
can
be
clearly
seen
in
queuing
up,
is
an
important
part
of
their
culture.
Once
I
saw
a
young
foreigner
trying
to
jump
the
queue
and
be
shouted
at
by
an
old
Israeli
man,
with
others
joining
in.
The
poor
guy
was
so
ashamed
___6___
he
slipped
away
as
fast
as
he
could.
But
don’t
think
Israeli
people
are
cruel.
If
you
have
to
leave
for
a
short
time,
___7___
the
person
behind
you
agrees,
you
can
always
come
back
and
stand
in
front
of
him
or
her.
However,
if
you
miss
him
or
her,
you’ll
have
to
start
over.
If
you
wait
next
to
the
basketball
court
or
tennis
court
for
more
than
five
minutes,
someone
on
the
court
will
definitely
offer
___8___(exchange)
places
with
you.
This
has
become
part
of
the
culture
in
Israel.
Their
culture
___9___
(reflect)
Israelis’
belief
in
equal
opportunities,
which
may
have
played
a
role
in
helping
Israel
to
stay
on
its
feet
in
the
world
even
after
the
cruel
Holocaust.
Compared
____10____
Israel,
our
way
of
queuing
up
is
much
more
casual.
People
always
go
out
of
their
way
to
get
the
“privilege”
of
a
shorter
wait.

I
have
some
good
news
and
some
bad
news.
First,
the
bad
news:
Just
____11____
(have)
good
grades
may
not
be
sufficient
to
get
you
your
high
school
diploma.
That's
because,
as
of
last
year,
students
are
required
to
complete
90
days
of
practical
training
and
60
hours
of
volunteering
in
order
to
graduate.
Now,
the
good
news:
the
new
requirements
are
going
to
give
you
a
head
start
in
coping
with
the
real
world
_____12_____your
school
days
are
over.
The
Ministry
of
Education
made
the
changes
because
it
____13____(want)
students
to
break
out
of
their
cocoons(茧).
The
ministry
feels
there
are
valuable
and
necessary
lessons
_____14_____
(learn)
outside
of
the
classroom
-
lessons
such
as
the
responsibilities
required
in
a
workplace
and,
by
volunteering,
the
responsibilities
required
of
a
good
citizen.
The
ministry's
changes,
however,
_____15_____
be
somewhat
problematic.
Students
are
busy
with
school
work,
so
where
will
they
find
the
time?
_____16_____
many
organizations
need
volunteers
on
weekends
and
you
can
easily
meet
that
part
of
the
requirement,
finding
a
place
to
do
your
practical
training
will
be
more
difficult.
It
will
probably
have
to
be
done
during
vacations.
Many
Western
companies
offer
internships(实习机会)and
summer
jobs
to
high
school
students.
They
see
_____17_____
as
part
of
their
corporate
responsibility
and
it's
also
a
good
way
for
them
to
identify
potential
employees.
Chinese
companies,
however,
offer
fewer
internships
and
summer
jobs,
and
their
programs
are
not
well-developed.
Students
may
just
end
up
sitting
around
all
day.
_____18_____
(bad)
yet,
there
are
some
companies
which
do
hire
students
but
just
to
exploit
their
labor.
There
are
stories
of
vocational
school
students
who,
as
part
of
their
practical
training,
_____19_____(send)to
factories
where
they
assemble
computer
parts.
They
spend
long
hours
on
an
assembly
line
and
are
paid
low
wages.
Not
much
to
learn
there
_____20_____
how
to
be
tired,
bored
and
broke.
Hopefully,
your
practical
experience
will
be
better
and
you
will
learn
useful
lessons.
The
most
important
of
which
is,
as
one

(C)
Culture
can
affect
not
just
language
and
customs,
but
also
how
people
experience
the
world
on
surprisingly
basic
levels.
Researchers,
with
the
help
of
brain
scans,
have
uncovered
shocking
differences
in
perception(感知)
between
Westerners
and
Asians,
what
they
see
when
they
look
at
a
city
street,
for
example,
or
even
how
they
perceive
a
simple
line
in
a
square,
according
to
findings
published
in
a
leading
science
journal
In
western
countries,
culture
makes
people
think
of
themselves
as
highly
independent
entities(实体)
.When
looking
at
scenes,
Westerners
tend
to
focus
more
on
central
objects
than
on
their
surroundings.
East
Asian
cultures,
however
emphasize
inter-dependence.
When
Easterners
look
at
a
scene,
they
tend
to
focus
on
surroundings
as
well
as
the
object.
Using
an
experiment
involving
two
tasks,
Dr
Hedden
asked
subjects
to
look
at
a
line
simply
to
estimate
its
length,
a
task
that
is
played
to
American
strengths.
In
another,
they
estimated
the
line's
length
relative
to
the
size
of
a
square,
an
easier
task
for
the
Asians.
The
level
of
brain
activity,
by
tracking
blood
flow,
was
then
measured
by
Brain
Scanners.
The
experiment
found
that
although
there
was
no
difference
in
performance,
and
the
tasks
were
very
easy,
the
levels
of
activity
in
the
subjects’
brains
were
different.
For
the
Americans,
areas
linked
to
attention
lit
up
more,
when
they
worked
on
the
task
they
tended
to
find
more
difficult--estimating
the
line's
size
relative
to
the
square.
For
the
Asians,
the
attention
areas
lit
up
more
during
the
harder
task
also--estimating
the
line's
length
without
comparing
it
to
the
square.
The
findings
are
a
reflection
of
more
than
ten
years
of
previous
experimental
research
into
east-west
differences
In
one
study,
for
instance,
researchers
offered
people
a
choice
among
five
pens,
four
red
and
one
green.
Easterners
were
more
likely
to
choose
a
red
pen
while
Westerners
were
more
likely
to
choose
the
green
one.
Culture
is
not
affecting
how
you
see
the
world,
but
how
you
choose
to
understand
and
internalize(使内化)
it.
But
such
habits
can
be
changed.
Some
psychological
studies
suggest
that
when
an
Easterner
goes
to
the
West
or
vice
versa,
habits
of
thought
and
perception
also
begin
to
change.
Such
research
gives
us
clues
on
how
our
brain
works
and
is
hopeful
for
us
to
develop
programs
to
improve
our
memory,
memory
techniques
and
enhance
and
accelerate
our
learning
skills.

We
often
focus
on
building
relationships
with
others
that
we
forget
the
essential
first
step:
being
friends
of
ourselves.
____67____
How
can
we
have
good
relationships
with
others
if
we
don’t
even
have
good
relationships
with
ourselves?
The
problem
might
be
worse
than
we
expect.
Maybe
we
don’t
like
ourselves
without
realizing
it.
Here
is
a
simple
checklist:
Is
there
anything
you
don’t
like
about
yourself
from
these
lists?
Your
past:
Maybe
you
have
made
mistakes
in
the
past
which
you
feel
bad
about.
____68____
Even
if
that
happened
in
distant
past,
your
subconscious(潜意识的)
mind
still
has
a
reason
not
to
like
yourself.
Your
background:
You
might
wish
that
you
were
born
in
a
different
family,
or
that
you
have
a
different
background.
Maybe
you
could
not
accept
the
fact
that
you
are
not
as
lucky
as
others.
They
seem
to
get
whatever
they
want
effortlessly
because
of
their
background.
Your
personal
features:
You
might
have
some
personality
features
that
you
don’t
like.
For
example,
you
may
be
an
introvert(内向的)
and
you
don’t
like
it;
you
wish
you
were
an
extrovert.
Others
might
have
better
achievements
than
you,
and
no
matter
how
hard
you
tried,
it
might
seem
impossible
for
you
to
match
them.
____69____
Is
there
anything
that
resonate
(共鸣)
with
you?
All
these
give
reasons
to
you
not
to
like
yourself.
That
in
turn
makes
it
difficult
for
you
to
be
a
good
friend
to
yourself.
____70____
Here
are
some
tips:
Forgive
yourself;
Accept
things
you
can’t
change;
Focus
on
your
strengths;
Write
your
success
stories;
Stop
comparing
yourself
with
others;
Always
be
true
to
yourself.
A.
That
is
the
first
step
if
we
are
to
have
good
relationships
with
others.
B.
You
might
think
that
it’s
because
you
are
not
smart
enough
or
don’t
have
enough
talents.
C.
You
can
do
something
to
improve
the
relationships
with
others.
D.
Fortunately,
there
are
always
things
you
can
do
to
fix
the
situation.
E.
You
might
be
disappointed
with
yourself
on
why
you
make
such
mistakes.
F.
Sometimes
you
might
not
believe
yourself.
