TEN-YEAR-OLD Barack Obama was one of the only three black students at his school in Hawaii, US. He felt very different from most other students. White girls wanted to touch his hair. A white boy asked him whether his father ate people. “I lied to them that my father was a Kenyan prince. But I kept asking myself who I am,” said Obama.
However, the boy made history. Obama became the first black president in US history.
Obama was born in 1961, to an African father and a white American woman from a small town in the US. He grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii. This unusual background made him wonder who he was. He once turned to alcohol (酒精) to help forget this question.
With help from his friends, Obama finally turned his life around at college. His hard work made him a star at Harvard. Later, he became only the third black senator (参议员) in US history.
During his race to the highest post in the US, Obama talked about his background. He called for a United States of America, rather than a white America or a black America. “Obama’s success has made Martin Luther King’s dream come true. That is: A man should not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character,” wrote ABC News. (Nov. 21st, 2008)

Mobile phones are being more wide used. They’re light on weight and easy to carry,
offering fast and convenient service for communication. The users use them for make phone
calls, sending short messages and internet-surfing. In recently years, mobile phones have
become popular with middle school students. Quite a few use it to keep in touch with their
families and friends, and which, of course, is convenient. However, I don’t think it was good to
do so. In spite of (尽管) the advantages mentioned above, student users often waste a lot of time
chatting on the phone in his spare time. Some even use them to cheat exams. In addition, mobile
phone bills cost students’ parents a lots of money.

take you rightly to the Friendship Hotel. My class will be over by then or I will pick you up
there. I will take you together to a hot-pot restaurant for dinner and we’ll talk with our plan for
the weekend over dinner. Having a pleasant trip and see you Friday.
Yours,

Nelson Mandela is one of the great figures in the world. He was born in South Africa on July 18th, 1918. He entered university in 1937, and later he received a law degree at the university.
In South Africa, black people were unfairly treated then, so he set up a law office to help poor black people in Johannesburg in 1952, but the law office was closed by government because he attacked anti-black laws. Because their peaceful struggle was not allowed, he encouraged to answer violence with violence. He was sentenced to prison for life on Robben Island for being one of the ANC leaders.
He was released from prison in 1990, and in 1993 he was given the Nobel Peace Prize for his noble work. In 1994 he became President of South Africa and led people in building a fair and free country for all the people there. All his life he devoted his time and energy to helping the poor people , for which he himself suffered a lot . He didn’t care about himself. In my opinion, he is a great man with great achievements.(共11张PPT)

Elias’ story
In 1952, when Elias was 12 years old, he first met Nelson Mandela, who was then a black lawyer offering guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. It was a very difficult period of his life and he needed Mandela’s help. At that time black people were treated unfairly. They had no right to vote and couldn’t get jobs they wanted. They even had no right to decide where to live and had to live in the poorest parts of the country. In addition, they had to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. Faced with the unfair society, the black people chose to attack the laws, first in a peaceful way,
but this was not allowed, so later they turned to violence. In 1963 Elias helped to blow up some government buildings, and later he was put into Robben Island, a terrible prison, in which he met Mandela once again. Mandela began a school for those who had little learning. Four years later, when Elias left the prison, he could find a job working in an office, because he was better educated. However, he lost his job soon after, because the police found out and told his boss what he had done before. He did not work again for twenty years until Mandela came to power in 1994.
