Section 1: Warming up (through questioning, presenting and discussing)
First of all, the Ss will be asked a question as to whether they have ever been to a museum before. It doesn’t matter that some of them may have not been to one yet. As to those, they can resort to imagination. They are required to name some objects they “see” in a museum (which can be anything of a long history). Then they will be showed some pictures of ancient money, ancient sculptures, and pictures so on and so forth, which are downloaded from the Internet.
Good morning, class. Today we’re going to learn about In Search of the Amber Room. Before our reading, I’d like to ask you a question.
- Have you ever been to a museum
- Yes.
- Can you name some of the things you saw in it
- Yes, ***.
- ***
- ***
- Very good. Thank you. Now let’s have a look at some pictures, to see whether they are the things you have ever seen in a museum.
(after looking at the pictures)
- what do you call them in Chinese
- wen wu.
- good, do you know how to say that in English
- Cultural relics.
- Great! As we can see, these are pictures, sculptures of ancient people, ancient money. They are not very big or large things. Can you imagine something big or large as cultural relics
- Buildings
- Exactly! Now we’ll see some world-famous buildings that are also known as cultural relics.
Secondly, a question will lead the Ss to think. It is no doubt that these are known as cultural relics, which are not so big in size. What about some large or huge ones, for example, like buildings Can they be cultural relics as well Next, a collection of best-known pictures are presented to the Ss, such as Eiffel Tower in France, Coliseum in Italy, Stonehenge in England, Taj Mahal in India, Great Wall and the Forbidden City in China. They are all known as cultural relics. Thus it is concluded that cultural relics can not only be small pieces but also large ones.
- Are they brilliant
- I think from today on you’ll know the English name of those familiar buildings. They are …
- Eiffel Tower in France, Coliseum in Italy, Stonehenge in England, Taj Mahal in India and Great Wall, the Forbidden City in China.
- Excellent!
- Now look at this opera house in Sydney. It is the youngest cultural relics in the world. How do you feel about it You must think that it is too modern to be called a cultural relic. Never mind. Let’s see what you think about the “cultural relics”. What do you think can a piece be called as a cultural relic What features must it own
- culture.
- ok, representing cultures. Good.
- old.
- ok, having a long history. or created by ancient people.
- precious.
- great! This is very important. We never call what we use in daily life as cultural relics, like chopsticks. What else
- huh.
- ok. That’s enough for the definition of cultural relics. You’re good enough. To sum up, a cultural relic is …
Thirdly, the Ss will be asked to list some features shared by these cultural relics. Supposed keys are “culture, history, valuable, rare, precious”, all of which may suggest a definition of cultural relics.
- We have appreciated some cultural relics, some of which in our country and some in foreign ones. We all like to see them, expecting a chance to touch them, right Unfortunately, some cultural relics are suffering from being stolen, being destroyed by natural disasters, ignorant locals. See the following reports.
- Unaware of this situation, we may be left with little cultural relics which would undoubtedly enrich our understanding of the past. Thus nowadays we call for the protection of them. What’s your opinion of protecting them Now it’s the free talk time.
Finally, several reports about some lost cultural relics in China will be showed to the Ss. The loss of them results from illegal business, stealing, and natural disaster. After that, the Ss will be encouraged to think of ways of protecting cultural relics.
Section 2: Reading (through presenting, skimming and scanning)
This section will be divided into two subsections – pre-reading and reading.
Pre-reading:
The pre-reading section follows two questions given in the textbook. Four pictures tell the Ss the beauty of amber; then an imagination of a room decorated with amber is pre-set. This would lead to the topic of this unit – the Amber Room.

For this reason, the Ss will listen to the tape to have a general acknowledgement of the topic of this text, i.e. the text is about the Amber Room. A picture of the Amber Room is ready for them to appreciate the brilliance and luxury of the Room. Then, according to exercise 2 in the textbook, which contains five questions as main ideas of paragraphs – five paragraphs. The Ss will be asked to match each one with the right paragraph. This way they will have a general view of each paragraph and of the whole text.

How was a new Amber Room built
How did the Amber Room get lost
How was the Amber Room made
Why did the King of Prussia give the Amber Room to the Czar of Russia as a gift
