I grew up with a four-year gap(差距)between myself and my younger brother. It was an enough distance in age to keep us close as we got older, but also enough of an age gap to make sure we lived our own lives in completely different ways. Having a younger brother while I was a girl was a lot of work for there was a lot of fighting.
However, as we've got older, we've become closer, and I've learned several things in life from my younger brother that I didn't realize I needed before.
My younger brother is one of the most talented and creative souls I've known. He's constantly feeding his creativity with new art forms, new instruments. He always seeks to understand and learn more about the world around him. He's helped remind me through his actions and words that giving up on creativity is something a person should never do.
My younger brother has always been a more introverted type, and if you speak to him, you're lucky to get over three words out of him at a time. Because of this, he's certainly learned the whole “actions speak louder than words” thing. But I've realized from my brother that I needn't speak to fill the silence. Sometimes, it's necessary to spend some of your time in silence and reflect in it. My younger brother has also been through hard times, but he's able to focus on learning from the hard times, unlike me, who tends to hold on to every little thing from my life. It's always been difficult for me to let things go and move on, but my younger brother has been an inspiration for me to try harder at letting go.
24. What does the author think of growing up as the older sister?
A. It is a great advantage.
B. It tends to be enjoyable.
C. It is troubling but inspiring.
D. It isn't always fun and easy.
25. What does the author's younger brother's actions suggest to her?
A. She should focus on the past and the present
B. She should never stop feeding her creativity.
C. She should move on with the past kept in mind.
D. She should explain every little detail of something.
26. What might the introverted people be like according to paragraph 4?
A. They are quiet.
B. They are quick.
C. They are noisy.
D. They are friendly.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Good Relationships between My Brother and Me
B. The Inspirations My Younger Brother was Given
C. Lessons My Little Brother Helped Me Learn
D. The Great Qualities of My Little Brother
C
Coffee chains create a lot of waste, from disposable take-away cups to the used grounds that are sent to landfills. Starbucks has started to try recyclable alternatives to the disposable cups. But the used coffee is often unnoted.
The world drinks around 2 billion cups of coffee a day, producing 6 million tons of used grounds every year. When they go to landfills, the grounds release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
UK Bio-bean has found a way to turn that waste into a valuable resource. At Bio-bean, used coffee grounds are processed to remove paper cups or plastic bags, and then passed through a dryer and a further screening process. They are finally processed into the fuel, Coffee Log.
"Coffee is highly calorific and lends itself to being a really fantastic fuel," says May, director of Bio-bean. "They burn about 20% hotter and 20% longer than wood logs do."
While these fuels release greenhouse gases when burned, if they replace other carbon-based fuels, Bio-bean estimates that the recycling process reduces emissions (排放)by 80% compared with sending the grounds to landfills.
Founded in 2013, Bio-bean grew rapidly, launching coffee collection services across the UK and building the world's first coffee recycling factory only two years later. In 2016 they launched their first product, Coffee Log, and are now ready to launch their first natural flavouring ingredient into the food and drink industry.
“We've really managed to succeed with our innovation because we've managed to get to scale. What started as a good idea is today the UK's largest recycler of coffee grounds. We are turning 7,000 tons of those grounds per year into the fuel," says George May. "Despite being delayed by the COVID-19, we plan to expand our operation into northwestern Europe within the next five years."
28. What do the first two paragraphs suggest?
A. It’s necessary to limit coffee consumption.
B. Drinking coffee is popular around the world.
C. Measures should be taken to recycle coffee waste.
D. Coffee grounds are the main cause of global warming.
29. What is the Bio-bean's Coffee Log?
A. A solid fuel. B. A natural food.
C. A cup of hot coffee. D. A tree trunk.
30. What do we know about Bio-bean?
A. It is a high-tech company with a long history.
B. It is a promising recycler of coffee grounds.
C. It is started to produce coffee and fuels.
D. It's developing faster than Starbucks.
31. What does the underlined phrase "get to scale" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Give accurate measurement. B. Cover a wide range.
C. Do mass production. D. Classify different grades.
D
Most of us don’t reach for that gnarled (多节的) carrots when selecting our produce at the local supermarket. That’s exactly why Americans waste up to 40% of eatable food every year. This unbelievable number has sparked the “ugly food” movement, and inspired many companies to sell misshapen fruit and vegetables to consumers, rather than throw them in the trash.
One San Francisco organization is taking a unique approach to this idea. The Salvage Supperclub hosts fancy dinners inside dumper truck (卸车) where they serve dishes entirely prepared with food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
Josh Treuhaft, founder of these ugly food dinners, originally came up with the idea to bring awareness to America’s food waste problem. “There is undeveloped potential in their food that for some reason, not to their own fault, is going to waste,” he told Seeker’s Laura Ling.
Treuhaft isn’t alone in his effort to reduce America’s food waste. A Change.org last year willed for Whole Foods to become part of the ugly food movement. They sold misshapen fruit and vegetables in Northern California stores.
Selling imperfect produce is still relatively rare right now, which can be partially due to a supply issue rather than a lack of willing participants. Raley’s, a Sacramento-based grocery chain, started an ugly food pilot program called “Real Good”, but discontinued it after 90 days saying they had “some challenges sourcing the product”. A grower might have large amounts of ugly produce one year due to terrible weather, but much less the next year if the weather has been more ideal. Harvests constantly vary and retailers are more likely to buy ugly produce in large number rather than just a few pounds at a time.
This is why organizations like Imperfect Produce and Salvage Supperclub are playing an important role in the prevention of food waste. Salvage Supperclub takes it a step further by not only buying the ugly produce, but turning it into a good dining experience as well.
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. People usually prefer good-looking produce.
B. Gnarled carrots mostly appear in the supermarket.
C. Many companies find new business opportunities.
D. Americans eat less fruit and vegetables than expected.
33. Why does the Salvage Supperclub have dinners inside the dumper truck?
A. To prove his fancy idea.
B. To remind people not to waste.
C. To show waste can be eaten.
D. To advise people lo dine in dumper truck.
34. What’s Josh Treuhaft’s advice to reduce America’s food waste?
A. People should reduce the ugly food.
B. People should make full use of ugly food.
C. People should be more aware of food shortage.
D. People should develop their potential in producing food.
35. Why did Raley’s stop its “Real Good” after 90 days?
A. Retailers’ pursuing larger profit.
B. Bad harvests due to bad weather.
C. Lack of steady sources of produce.
D. People’s unwillingness to buy imperfect produce.

I remember from a young age being attracted by the world around me. Whenever I observed my surroundings, I would always wonder about what they were made of. 36 After a little time had passed, this curiosity was developed by my high school chemistry teacher, which was finally furthered as I got my doctor's degree in chemistry while I was at university. From that time on, I have continuously developed my understanding and have been working in the chemical industry. It has been a decade now and my interest in chemistry has never dropped off.
37 And I have improved my understanding in this field of study.
In this day and age, as a means to continuously increase an interest in the natural sciences in your child, labs are available that provide an ideal learning environment for modern students.
38 In the lab, your children can do a great job of discovering this fascinating field of study. Designing a simple science project lab with education in mind is possible with home chemistry labs that can be bought from respected colleges or universities.
Science jobs in these subjects are and will continue to be required by industry and society.
39 One of the most important ways parents can help their children develop an interest in mathematics, science, and technology is by showing attitudes and values that support learning.
40 The sooner the children begin to learn about a field of study, the more prepared they will be to face the challenges that these subjects might offer.
A. These days, you can make a home chemistry lab.
B. Instead, it has increased as I have continued to learn.
C. Encourage your children to find out about different jobs.
D. They require great attention to details, teamwork and skills.
E. A particular field of study which I was most interested in was chemistry.
F. Help children see mathematics, science and technology that exist around them.

Ben opened his book and studied the instructions to build a toy boat. His best friend Isaac raced around the yard.
"Isaac! How will you ever learn to do anything if you don’t study and work?"
"Well, I don’t like to work. I just want to play and have fun," said Isaac.
Ben shook his head and went back to work. Isaac went on playing.
Six years later, at sixteen, Ben was taken on as an apprentice(学徒) shipbuilder. For the next four years, he worked hard and paid attention to everything he was shown.
The manager of the shipyard approached Ben one day. "Ben, you’re one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen. You’ve gone from apprentice to lead worker to foreman(领班). Although you are young, we’re promoting you to supervisor(监督员) over the entire yard."
Ben shook the manager’s hand. A sense of pride filled his chest. "Thank you, sir. I will be the best supervisor you ever had."
The manager smiled, "I’m sure you will be."
Over the next several years, Ben continued to work hard. He created his own shipbuilding company and built a famous ship. He was proud of himself for working to make his dream of becoming a respected shipbuilder come true.
One evening, Ben wandered into a butcher’s(屠夫)shop. There with a broom in his hand was his old friend. "Issac, is that you? It’s been so many years. How have you been, my old friend?"
Issac threw the broom behind the counter. "Ben, it’s so ggod to see you. What have you been up to?"
Ben explained what he had done over the past years. He told Issac how he apprenticed and then worked his way up to supervisor of a shipyard and that now he was his own master of a shipyard. "so. What about you? Is this your shop?"
Issac’s eyes moved back and forth. "Ugh. Oh, yes. This is my shop. It’s not much, but I do pretty well."

2. 开头已给出。

Ben threw his shoulders back and let out a big laugh.

One possible version:
Ben threw his shoulders back and let out a big laugh. "I’m so glad for you, Issac. To be honest, I was worried how you’d make out. You never wanted to work. Good for you that you realized with hard work comes great rewards. And you have your own shop now," said Ben. Issac
lowered his head. "I’m sorry, Ben. I lied to you. This isn’t my shop. I sweep the floors at night and I sleep in the back room because I can’t afford anything else. I’ve been doing this since I was sixteen," said Issac.
"well, I see. We’re going to do something about that," said Ben, handing Issac his card. "Come to my shipyard on Monday morning, and I’ll make you an apprentice shipbuilder. But you must work and move forward on the job, or I will have to fire you." Tears welled up in Issac’s eyes. "I’ll be there, my friend, and I’ll make both of us proud," said Issac.
