Earlier this year, artist Malik was about to post a selfie (自拍照)from the Brooklyn Bridge when he had the second thought. He wanted to share something different with his friends and the world.
Malik thought that the social media (媒体)had become impersonal and he wanted to connect with people in a more meaningful way. Therefore, the Reading Project was born. He began leaving piles of his books in famous New York City locations with a card containing simple instructions put inside each one: take a book, read it and share your thoughts with the artist by email.
The piles of books themselves can be seen as works of art, and so is the process (过程)of sharing. Unlike many of the things we share today, he likes to keep the project off social media. To keep the project pure (纯的),he doesn’t even turn around as he walks away once he has left a pile of books. When he has left them behind, he prefers email to be the only way that he learns what happens to them. The project has now taken him — and his books — all over the world, including London.
“I hope people pick them up and I also hope they read them and let me know their feelings on them. And even if they don't let me know, I just hope they will read the books,” Malik said.
He has received thousands of messages from people in more than 30 countries all over the world. For Malik, kooks are meaningless and lifeless if they gather dust(灰尘)on a shelf and are never read again. He intends to carry on with the project for some time, with a plan to visit Brazil and then decides whether he will continue it or not.

Would you like to work at home in the future? Working from home gets a bad rap (名声).Google the phrase 一 you’ll see a cheat or low-level jobs.
But Stanford Graduate School of Business professor Nicholas Bloom says requiring workers to be in the office is an outdated work tradition. It ignores(忽视)today’s fine communications methods and long commutes(通勤)and actually hurts firms and workers.
“Working from home is a future-looking technology, ” Bloom told an audience during a program TEDx-Stanford, “and I think it has a bright future. ” To test his idea, Bloom, with co-researcher James, did research on a largest travel company, Chip. They invited volunteers to a study in which half worked from home for nine months, coming into the office one day a week and half worked only from the office. Bloom tracked (跟踪)these two groups for about two years. The results? “We found a 13% improvement in performance from people working at home. ” Bloom Rays. Two reasons led to that uptick: First, people working from home actually work all the time. Second, Bloom says, people at home are able to concentrate better. “The office is actually an amazingly noisy environment, ‘ There’s a cake in the break room; Bob’s leaving, so come and join us for dinner. ’”
Also, his study found that workers’ quitting jobs at the company dropped by 50% when they were allowed to work from home.
Bloom hopes this example helps kill the negative (负面的)opinions on working from borne. For workers they’re much more productive and happier. 35. We can infer from the passage that .

I'm an English teacher working in Russia, and for some reason I really don't like that classroom topic - Talk About Your Family. Perhaps it's because everyone studied English from the same book at school. So all the students say, "My family consists of five members: Me, my mother, my father, my brother and my dog…"and so on, as if all families are exactly the same.
Let's get rid of the phrase "my family consists of…"and look at some more interesting ways to talk about families. English is rich in idioms (习语)to talk about family life. We've mentioned the black sheep of the family - that's someone who didn't fit in, or caused a family scandal(丑闻). If you're loyal(忠诚)to your family, you can say blood is thicker than water or keep it in the family. If you share a talent with another family member, you can say it runs in the family. You might have your father's eyes or your mother's nose. If you're like one of your parents, you can say like father, like son or you can be a chip off the old block.
Then there are idioms that have left the family and gone on to have a life of their own. For example, a Londoner is telling someone how to get a new passport. "Get four pictures taken, pick up a form in the post office, hand it in with your old passport and …Bob's your uncle." It means "the problem is solved". But love to know who the original Bob was, and why he was such a useful uncle to have.
(24) Why does the writer dislike the classroom topic Talk About Your Family? ______
A. Because he works in Russia.
B. Because all families are the same.
C. Because all answers are the same.
D. Because he has no family there.
(25) When we mention the black sheep of the family, we can refer to someone ______ .
A. who caused a family scandal
B. who is loyal to the family
C. who has the father's eyes
D. who has a useful uncle
(26) What can you say if you want to express you have the same talent with your brother? ______
A. Blood is thicker than water.
B. It runs in the family.
C. You are the chip of the old block.
D. Bob is your uncle.
(27) According to the passage, how do you probably feel when you hear "Bob's your uncle"? ______
A. sad.
B. bored.
C. stressed.
D. satisfied.

I live a SOHO life. I work at home and my company has closed several offices. Some companies that introduced home working didn't have much success. I don't think they should go back to making all their workers working in offices. Instead, it would be better to retrain their managers. Managers who deal with home workers have to be able to develop team spirit among home working people. They must be in regular communication with people in their teams, but not always be checking-up on them
Simon
Talking with my coworkers at the office is enjoyable. However, most of the office talks are time-wasting and nothing to do with work. Sometimes it is very troublesome. I have worked at home for over 20 years. Every three months I have to return to my office for a meeting. I quite enjoy the time spent there. It's all good fun,but I am really surprised to see how much time people waste there. I haven't had great success in my job, but I've been at home to see my children grown up.
James
I used to hate working at an office. People stood behind me and talked loudly. I am a soft- ware developer and I have to focus on my work. I found I work much better at home where no one breaks my thinking. However, it's really important that you control yourself and carry on with your work no matter where you are.
Paul
Two years ago, I started working from home. At first I enjoyed being at home. I could eat when I wanted to and wear whatever I liked. However, after a bit I missed meeting with my coworkers. Now I have moved into an office and just do one or two days at home. I feel I work better because I am not in the same place all day. I think a bit of both is the best choice.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would 1 say them in English?" At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time. I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so he it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.

John Robert was born in a farm family and his father was a horse trainer. When John was a child, he often went from one farm to another with his father. Sometimes they didn't have enough money to pay for food, but John still loved this kind of life. He even hoped to own a horse farm when growing up.
When he was in school, his teacher once asked students to write about what they wanted to be and do when they grew up. John wrote a seven-page paper talking about his dream of having a horse farm one day. He even drew a picture of a horse farm on the paper.
The next day John handed it to his teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back. On the front page was a large red "F" with some words "See me after class." And the boy did and asked his teacher, "Why did I get an F?" The teacher said, "This dream will not come true for a young boy like you. Owning a horse farm needs a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for a lot of things. There is no way you could ever do it." Then the teacher added, "If you write this paper again with a simple dream, I will give you a good grade."
After school he thought about it carefully. At last, he decided to hand in the same paper, making no changes at all. He wrote, "You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."
Many years later, John had his own 200 acres(英亩)horse farm. His dream came true.

The Day My Father Almost Drowned Me
Dad used to be a devoted fisherman. He tried to get me interested as well, but it never seemed much fun to me. The line always seemed to tangle(缠结), the worms(虫)would not hold still, the hooks(挂钩)were sharp, and Dad always seemed to want to go someplace far away, so that you had to get up in the middle of the night.
One time when I was about ten years old, my dad took me fishing to the American Falls reservoir (I think that's where it was). Our neighbor Wayne Booth had built a kayak(皮船), which was painted bright blue, and Dad thought we could row out onto the reservoir(划到水库)and catch some fish. I don't remember whether we caught any fish or not. I think I was having more fun rowing the kayak, which is rowed facing forward with a double-ended oar(船桨), unlike an ordinary row-boat, which I never liked because you couldn't see where you were going. But mid-afternoon the wind came up a little. We were maybe a hundred feet from shore, when the wind caught my hat and blew it into the water just a few feet away. Dad said, "Don't worry. I'll get it!" and reached out for the hat.
Now, a kayak is a very skillfully balanced thing, and Dad's reaching for the hat was just enough to upset the balance and tip us over. I didn't know how to swim yet, and thought I was a goner. Dad did, too, I think, because he was grabbing for me madly until we realized that the water was only about four feet deep.
Mother was not too pleased when we got home, soaking wet, and I think she thought Dad was creating the story a little so that it wouldn't sound like he had really almost drowned(溺死)me.

a. Dad grabbed for me madly. b. Our neighbor built a kayak.

A. a, b, c, d B. b, d, c, a C. C, d, a, b D. b, a, d, c
27. What does the writer want to express by saying "I was a goner"?
A. He was going to be saved. B. He was going to be drowned.
C. He was going to be beaten. D. He was lucky to leave.

Radio proved its importance during World War II(1939-45)with almost immediate coverage of events. Between 1941 and 1945, Americans tuned in to listen to breaking news from Europe, hearing about major battles and the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii just moments after the actual events. News reporters such as Edward R. Murrow(1908-1965)and William Shirer (1904-1993) offered insightful(有深刻见解的)commentary and straight, hard news. Their example would influence the news anchors(新闻广播员)on the new media-television, commonly called TV-for decades. Radio's golden age ended with the war.
The 1940s were the true beginning of the TV era. Although sets had been available as early as the late 1930s, the widespread distribution and sale of TV sets did not really take off until after the war. Broadcasting stations ignored many of their radio stations and poured money into TV after the war. Soon many radio dramas, variety shows, and comedy programs were available on TV and radio was left with mostly music. For children, new shows like Kukla, Fran, and Ollie and The Howdy Doody Show offered laughs. One of the most popular early TV programs was a variety show called Texaco Star Theater, starring comedian Milton Berle(1908-2002), that started in 1948.
As the decade continued, more and more people bought TV sets. Instead of circling around their radios, people would settle in front of their TVs for news and entertainment. As TV became more popular, the government set up regulations to ensure competition between stations, channels (频道), and programs. The 1950s would see the new medium change dramatically(明显的)with the introduction of color and other technological advances.
28. Which of the following is right according to the passage?
A. TV played an important role in World War II.
B. Radio disappeared with the end of World War II.
C. R. Murrow and William Shirer are excellent news reporters.
D. Americans picked up the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii just before the actual event.
29. What does the underlined part "take off" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Copy. B. Remove. C. Be popular. D. Leave.
30. What can we learn from the last passage?
A. TVs has taken the place of radios.
B. The government made rules to limit the development of TVs.
C. During the 1950s TV changed better with the introduction of new energy technology.
D. As time went on, less and less people prefer radios.
31. What's the best title for the passage?
A. TV and Radio in the 1940s B. Why Do People Prefer TVs
C. The History of Radio and TV D. The Importance of TV and Radio

Children born in Asia are less likely to develop an allergy(过敏)to nuts than those born in Australia, according to Australian scientists.
A questionnaire from University of Melbourne distributed to 57, 000 five-year-old children in the state of Victoria found that, of those voted, none of the children born in Asia then migrated(迁移)to Australia had an allergy to nuts.
However, children with Asian parents born in Australia were found to be up to three times more likely to develop an allergy to nuts than children with Australian parents.
The findings have led researchers to believe that the Asian environment somehow protects children against developing many food allergies.
Professor Katie Allen, who led the University of Melbourne research, said that this discovery could help us understand why allergy rates were rising in Australia and possibly lead to the development of a treatment.
"We know that food allergies are a new kid on the block; we know this has happened in the last 20 to 30 years so we know it's something to do with modern lifestyle," Allen told Xinhua in an
interview on Wednesday.
"So if we can work out if it's one factor, or several factors working together, then we can turn
back the tide."
Allen theorized that there were three contributing factors to the Asian environment preventing allergies from developing; Vitamin D, allergen exposure and exposure to a greater variety of organisms.
"People living in Asia have often had to deal with coming into contacts with different levels of public health so their immune system is healthy and able to fight off allergies," she said.
"People are genetically at risk of developing allergies if they're Asian but if they're born in Asia those protective factors come into play."
32. What can you infer according to Paragraph 1?
A. The children born in Asia will never have an allergy to nuts.
B. Children are protected against developing all kinds of allergies.
C. Australian parents are more likely to develop an allergy than Asian parents.
D. Children born in Australia are more likely to develop an allergy than those born in Asia.
33. Why were allergy rates rising in Australia in Professor Katie Allen's opinion?
A. Because of the Australian environment. B. Because of the Australian unhealthy food.
C. Because of the Australian water. D. Because of too fast-development of Australia.
34. Which of the following is not the factor to prevent allergies from developing?
A. Vitamin D. B. Immune system.
C. Allergen exposure. D. Exposure to all sorts of organisms.
35. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. A questionnaire from University of Melbourne.
B. People are genetically at risk of developing allergies.
C. Asian immune system is healthy and able to fight off allergies.
D. Who are more likely to develop an allergy, kids born in Australia or Asia?

Americans like to travel on vacations. Today more and more travelers in the United States are spending nights at small houses or inns instead of hotels. They get a room for the night and the breakfast for the next morning.
Rooms for the night in private homes with breakfast have been popular with travelers in Europe for many years. In the past five to ten years, these bed-and-breakfast places have become popular in the United States. Many of these America’s bed-and-breakfast inns are old historic buildings. Some bed-and-breakfast inns have only a few rooms. Others are much larger. Some inns do not provide telephones or televisions in the rooms while others do.
Staying at a bed-and-breakfast inn is much different from staying at a hotel. Usually the cost is much less. Staying at an inn is almost like visiting someone’s home. The owners are glad to tell about the area and the interesting places to visit. Many vacationists say they enjoy the chance to meet local families.

A. At hotels B. In the open air C. In their cars D. At small houses or inns
22. How many years have the bed-and-breakfast places been popular in the USA?________.
A. For five years B. For one year C. For five to ten years D. For ten years

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.
If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.
24. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1? ________.
A. They are often forgotten by their owners B. They like to stay in warm places
C. They build their won shelters D. They are used to living outdoors
25. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?_______.
A. To help them find shelters B. To keep them company
C. To know when to bring them inside D. To keep them from eating bad food
26. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ________.
A. get lost in the wild B. run short of clean water
C. dig deep holes for fun D. make the water in the bowl dirty
27. What is the purpose of this text? ________.
A. To give practical advice B. To solve an argument
C. To tell an interesting story D. To present a research result
C
Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏表演). Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents. The children were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night. One could sense they had never been to the circus before.
The father and the mother were ahead standing, proud as they could be.
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets.”
The ticket lady told him the price.
The man’s wife lowered her head and there was no longer a smile on the man’s face.
The father leaned a little closer and quietly asked, “How much did you say?
The ticket lady again told him the price.
The man obviously didn’t have enough money. How could he turn around and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus.
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. (We were not rich in any sense of the world!) My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man knew what was going on. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his and pressed tightly onto the bill, and with his lips trembling and tears streaming down his cheeks, he replied, “Thank you, thank you , Sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn’t go to the circus that night, but we didn’t go without.
Why did the smile on the man’s face disappear after he spoke with the ticket lady? ________.
A. He had lost his money
B. His children were noisy
C. The tickets were sold out
D. The tickets were too expensive
We can infer from the text that the writer’s father didn’t give the money to the father directly because ________.
he didn’t want to hurt the man’s pride and respect
he wanted to make the father feel ashamed
he was not very willing to help the man
he wanted to pretend to be very wealthy
We can conclude from the last sentence of the story that ________.
they had never gone to the circus ever since
they felt it a pity that they didn’t go to the circus
they felt they would be scolded for their behavior
they didn’t feel bad though they didn’t go to the circus
31. What’s the best title of the text? ________.
A. A pity of mine B. Something bad as a child
C. A $20 bill D. Relationship among people
D
Have you read this before? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. That is the 90/10 Principle. You really have no control over 10% of what happens to us, but you determine the other 90%.
Let’s use an example. You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You severely scold your daughter and she breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you blame your wife for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt.
Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and she misses the bus. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at the school and your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye.
After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, yet when you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your wife and daughter.
Why did you have a bad day? Did the coffee cause it? Did your daughter cause it?
Here is what could have and should have happened.
Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, “It’s ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time”. Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.
Notice the difference? Two different scenarios(剧情). Both started the same. Both ended different.
32. From the text, what happens after the coffee incident? ________.
A. The couple have an argument B. The mother gets to work late
C. The father has a traffic accident D. The daughter finishes breakfast soon
33. The author use the example ________.
A. to compare different attitudes B. to prove the 90/10 principle
C. to give advice on self-control D. to show the importance of harmony
34. The underlined word “wedge” in Paragraph 4 can probably be replaced by ________.
A. improvement B. advantage C. disadvantage D. wound
35. According to the text, ________ leads to the different endings.
A. your coffee B. your family C. your reaction D. your experience
