Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher regarded as one of the founders of modern Western philosophy(哲学), and as being the first moral philosopher. He made no writings, and is known mainly through the description of later classical writers after his lifetime, particularly the writings of his famous students Plato and Xenophon. Aristophanes, a writer, is the only source to have written during his lifetime.
Socrates was born in Alopeke. He first worked as a sculptor, and created the status of the Charites, which stood near the Acropolis until the 2nd century AD. Xenophon reports that because young men were not allowed to enter the Agora, they used to gather in shops surrounding it. Socrates often went to these shops in order to talk with the traders. Most famous among them was Simon, the Shoemaker.
Perhaps Socrates’ most important contribution to Western thought is his dialectic(辩证的) method of questioning, known as the Socratic method. It was first described by Plato in the Socratic Dialogues. To solve a problem, it would be broken down into a series of questions, the answers to which gradually collect the answer a person would look for. The development and practice of this method is a key point in earning his title as the father of moral philosophy in Western philosophy. The Socratic method has often been considered as a part of American education.

Brazil has experienced a large number of wildfires this year, more than half of which occurred in the Amazon rainforest. The northern states of Roraima, Acre, Rond nia and Amazonas have been particularly badly affected.
The figures show an 83 percent increase in fore outbreaks in Brazil in comparison to the same period in 2018, representing the highest number of fire since the agency began collecting such data in 2013. In fact, Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research(INPE) says it has identified more than 72,000 fires in Brazil between January and August this year, more than the roughly 40,000 recorded in the entirely 2018.
But what could the long-term damage of these fires be for the world’s largest tropical rainforest?
Ricardo Mello, head of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Amazon program, said that an increase in forest fires could spell disaster for the rainforest. “Science has shown that the Amazon forest could become a savanna. According to a study by Thomas Lovejoy and Carlos Nobre, negative effects of deforestation, climate change and widespread use of fire indicate a turning point for the Amazon system to become a non-forest ecosystem with 20-25 percent deforestation.” Mello told Newsweek. “We are very close to that because deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon in around 17 percent. Such fires degraded the land and are pushing the country closer to the turning point.” he added.
Meg Symington, the WWF’s Managing Director for the Amazon. Also pointed out the long-term effects that fire can have on the forest ecosystem. “This endangers wildlife and the livelihoods of millions. A new WWF study just reported that we’ve already seen 53 percent declines of forest species population in the past 40 years. Forest fires add even more pressure to wildlife.” she told Newsweek.
“Wildfires in Brazil is a disaster for the fragile Amazon rainforest environment. We need to take action right now.” Ricardo Mello told Newsweek journalist.

Move over, helicopter parents. “Snowplow(扫雪机) parents” are the newest typical example of a super-intensive(高强度) parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, texting their college kids to wake them up so they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.
Helicopter parenting, the practice of wandering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring their every activity is so 20th century. Some rich parents now are more like snowplows: machines moving ahead, clearing any difficulties in their children’s path to success, so they don’t have to face failure, frustration(挫折) or lose opportunities.
It starts early, when parents get on wait lists for excellent preschools before their babies are born and try to make sure their kids never do anything that may frustrate them. It gets more intense when school starts: running forgotten homework to school or calling a coach to request that their children make the team.
Rich parents may have more time and money to devote to making sure their children don’t ever meet with failure, but it’s not only rich parents practicing snowplow parenting. This super-intensive parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, regardless of income, education, or race.
Yes, it’s a parent’s job to support the children, and to use their adult wisdom to prepare for the future when their children aren’t mature enough to do so. That’s why parents hide certain toys from babies to avoid getting angry or take away a teenager’s car keys until he finishes his college applications.
But snowplow parents can take it too far, some experts say. If children have never faced a difficulty , what happens when they get into the real world?
Learning to solve problems, take risks and overcome frustration is vital life skills, many child development experts say, and if parents don’t let their children experience failure, the children don’t acquire them.
32. What do we know about snow parenting?
A. It appeared before helicopter parenting.
B. It provides more than enough services for their children.
C. It costs parents less than helicopter parenting.
D. It was a typical phenomenon of the 20th century.
33. What does the fourth paragraph mainly say about snowplow parenting?
A. Its cost. B. Its benefits.
C. Its ending time. D. Its popularity.
34. Why does the author mention parents’ taking away car keys?
A. To show it’s correct to help children when necessary.
B. To show teenagers are no better than babies.
C. To advise teenagers not to treat their cars as toys.
D. To advise parents not to buy cars for their teenagers.
35. What’s the possible result of snowplow parenting according to the experts?
A. Children mastering more key life skills than parents.
B. Children gaining great success in every aspect of life.
C. Children lacking problem-solving ability in reality.
D. Children meeting no problems or frustration after growing up.

六、书面表达
Dear Eric,
I’m Li Hua, a Senior 3 student from Xinhua Middle School. I’m writing to sign up for the individual oral English training program offered online.
Having learned English for more than 7 years, I’ve learned the basic rules of grammar and vocabulary. However, without easy access to an English environment, I’m quite weak in spoken English. Besides, my pronunciation needs correcting as well as improving. So I’d like you to recommend an appropriate teacher to me. In addition, with the college entrance examination approaching, I can only spare one hour a week for the course. I hope the course would be arranged on weekends.
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration and reply to me early.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua
