A
These
days,
young
people
in
some
English?speaking
countries
are
speaking
a
strange
language,
especially
when
communicating
on
social
media.
Look
at
these
words
chosen
by
The
Washington
Post:
“David
Bowie
dying
is
totes
tradge”
and
“When
Cookie
hugged
Jamal
it
made
me
totes
emosh”.
Or
this
sentence:“BAE,
let
me
know
if
you
stay
in
tonight.”
What
on
earth
do
they
mean?
Well,
“totes”
is
a
short
form
of
“totally”.
Similarly,
“tradge”
means
“tragic”
and
“emosh”
means
“emotional”.
It
seems
that,
for
millennials
(千禧一代),typing
in
this
form
is
not
only
time?saving
but
fashionable.
As
you
can
see,
many
millennial
slangs
(俚语)
are
formed
by
so?called
“totesing”—the
systematic
abbreviation
(缩写)
of
words.
The
trend
might
have
started
with
“totally”
becoming
“totes”,
but
it
now
has
spread
to
many
other
English
words.
The
origins
of
other
millennial
slangs
are
more
complex
than
“totesing”.
“Bae”,
for
example,
has
been
widely
used
by
African?Americans
for
years.
It
can
be
an
expression
of
closeness
with
one's
romantic
partner
or,
like
“sweetheart”,
for
someone
without
romantic
connection.
After
pop
singer
Pharrell
used
the
word
in
his
work,
“bae”
became
mainstream.
Some
people
might
think
millennial
slangs
lower
the
value
of
the
English
language,
but
Melbourne
University
linguist
(语言学家)
Rosey
Billington
doesn't
agree.
She
says
when
people
are
able
to
use
a
language
in
a
creative
way,
they
show
that
they
know
the
language
rules
well
enough
to
use
words
differently.
Two
other
linguists,
Lauren
Spradlin
and
Taylor
Jones,
share
the
same
view.
The
two
analysed
hundreds
of
examples
of
totes?speak
and
discovered
totesing
has
complex
roots.
It
isn't
simply
an
adult
version
of
baby
talk,
nor
a
clever
way
to
minimize
your
word
count.
Rather,
it
is
a
highly
organized
system
that
relies
on
a
speaker's
mastery
of
English
pronunciation.
It
is
about
sounds,
follows
sound
system
of
English
and
has

Almost
all
cultures
celebrate
the
end
of
one
year
and
the
beginning
of
another
in
some
way.
Different
cultures
celebrate
the
beginning
of
a
new
year
in
different
ways,
and
at
different
times
on
the
calendar.
In
Western
countries,
people
usually
celebrate
New
Year
at
midnight
on
January
1st.
People
may
go
to
parties,
dress
in
formal
clothes—like
tuxedos
(小礼服)
and
evening
gowns,
and
drink
champagne
at
midnight.
During
the
first
minutes
of
the
New
Year,
people
cheer
and
wish
each
other
happiness
for
the
year
ahead.
But
some
cultures
prefer
to
celebrate
the
New
Year
by
waking
up
early
to
watch
the
sun
rise.
They
welcome
the
New
Year
with
the
first
light
of
the
sunrise.
It
is
also
a
common
Western
custom
to
make
a
New
Year's
promise,
called
a
resolution.
New
Year's
resolutions
usually
include
promises
to
try
something
new
or
change
a
bad
habit
in
the
new
year.
Many
cultures
also
do
special
things
to
get
rid
of
bad
luck
at
the
beginning
of
a
new
year.
For
example,
in
Ecuador,
families
make
a
big
doll
from
old
clothes.
The
doll
is
filled
with
old
newspapers
and
firecrackers.
At
midnight,
these
dolls
are
burned
to
show
the
bad
things
from
the
past
year
are
gone
and
the
new
year
can
start
afresh
(again).
Other
common
traditions
to
keep
away
bad
luck
in
a
new
year
include
throwing
things
into
rivers
or
the
ocean,
or
saying
special
things
on
the
first
day
of
the
new
year.
Another
New
Year
tradition
that
is
followed
to
bring
good
luck
is
to
eat
grapes
on
New
Year's
Day.
The
more
grapes
a
person
eats,
the
more
good
luck
the
person
will
have
in
the
year.
In
France,
people
eat
pancakes
for
good
luck
at
New
Year.
In
the
United
States,
some
people
eat
black?eyed
peas
(豇豆)for
good
luck—but
to
get
good
luck
for
a
whole
year
you
have
to
eat
365
of
them!

Ⅰ.阅读理解
Canada
is
said
to
be
one
of
the
Earth's
most
beautiful
countries.
Even
though
Canada
is
pretty
on
the
outside,it
has
ugly
truth
hidden
behind
its
beauty.
Canada
has
many
environmental
problems
that
can
greatly
affect
the
people
and
wildlife
of
the
region.
Canada
has
many
natural
resources.
But
if
not
treated
properly,
they'll
be
harmed
or
used
up.
This
is
happening
to
the
Great
Lakes.
Shared
by
Canada
and
the

the
Great
Lakes
are
used
for
fishing
and
producing
electricity.In
the
1970's
the
Great
Lakes
were
used
for

ground
for
factories.
To
put
a

to
the
illegal

dangerous
dumping,the
two

both
signed
the
Great
Lakes
Water
Quality
Agreement,
which
makes

no

are
harmed
by
the

water
and
also
reduces
the
amount
of
human
waste
that
is
dumped
in
that
area.
Almost
2

Canadian
citizens
make
their

mining.
Even
though
some
people
believe
that
the
reward
is
bigger

the
risk
of
mining,
mining
can
destroy
an
area's
envi?ronment.
The
rock

soil
from
mining
is
just
dumped
in
any
place
that
is
available.
This
can
lead
to
an
increase
in
sulfur

acid
rain
and
killing
plants
and
animals.
Another

Clear?cutting(清场伐木)

Ⅱ.七选五
It
can
be
difficult
to
make
friends
living
in
a
big
city,especially
when
you
don't
know
many
people.
Over
years
of
experience
and
studying
social
skills,
I
discovered
it's
possible
to
make
friends
without
even
trying.
Here
are
just
a
few
strategies
that
you
can
use.
·Be
seen
without
trying
to
get
attention.
__1__All
you
have
to
do
is
place
yourself
in
environments
where
people
will
see
you.
This
can
be
done
anywhere
you
go,
such
as
the
supermarket
or
your
yogastudio.
·Use
the
power
of
listening.
There's
an
interesting
phenomenon
that
occurs
when
you
listen
to
other
people—they'll
keep
talking.
Just
keep
giving
them
good
eye
contact
and
show
with
your
body
language
that
you
care.
__2__
·Think
about
what
you
can
give
to
other
people.
So
often
we
think
about
what
we
can
get
out
of
others
when
making
friends,
but
that
thinking
needs
to
be
turned
around.
Try
offering
a
piece
of
helpful
advice
or
invite
someone
you
just
met
to
have
lunch
with
you
the
following
week.
·__3__
When
you
have
at
least
a
few
stories
to
share
with
others,
you'll
never
run
out
of
things
to
talk
about.
·__4__
It
may
not
be
natural
for
some
of
us
to
smile,
but
a
smile
is
one
of
the
most
attractive
things
that
someone
can
display
when
they're
meeting
new
people.
__5__They're
always
available
if
you
want
to
connect
with
people
instantly
and
develop
true
lasting
friendships.
A.Smile
like
there's
no
tomorrow.
B.Think
about
these
five
strategies
as
tools.
C.Listening
is
a
path
to
build
trust
and
charm.
D.Always
have
some
good
stories
to
tell
others.
E.You
don't
have
to
say
anything
interesting
to
get
people's
attention.
F.Think
hard
and
you
will
find
a
good
way
to
make
friends
with
others.
G.Making
friends
is
difficult,
but
if
you
try
your
best,
you
will
make
it.
生活在大城市中,尤其是没有很多认识的人的时候,或许交朋友会很困难。本文便介绍了如何与人交朋友并建立牢固的关系。
1.E 解析:根据本段标题句“Be
seen
without
trying
to
get
attention.”及空后的“where
people
will
see
you”可知应选E项(你不必说有趣的事情来吸引人们的注意)。该选项中的get
people's
attention与本段标题相照应。
2.C 解析:根据本段标题句“Use
the
power
of
listening.”可知,本段建议使用倾听的力量,因此C项(倾听是建立信任和魅力的途径)符合语境。
3.D 解析:根据下文的“When
you
have
at
least
a
few
stories
to
share
with
others...”可知,本段讲的是“有好故事来讲给别人”。
根据关键词stories可知选D项。
4.A 解析:根据下文的关键词smile可知,本段介绍的建议与微笑有关,故选A项。
5.B 解析:根据空后的“They're
always
available
if
you
want
to
connect
with
people
instantly
and
develop
true
lasting
friendships.”可知,最后一段是对上文所说的五个策略的总结,故选B项。课时作业4 单元加餐练

Ⅰ.阅读理解
The
United
States
of
America
is
the
most
culturally
diverse
country
in
the
world
in
terms
of
culture,
religion,
ethnicity
and
sexual
orientation.
As
a
combination
of
various
races
and
cultures,
America
is
home
to
all.
The
culture
here
is
so
unique
that
citizens
can
be
just
as
proud
of
their
original
cultural
heritage
as
they
are
to
be
Americans.
What
is
now
the
US
was
initially
inhabited
by
native
people
until
the
land
was
settled
by
various
European
groups
and
African
slaves.
Since
the
20th
century,
the
country
has
become
a
heaven
for
people
from
all
over
the
globe.
The
arrival
of
immigrants
has
shifted
populations
from
rural
areas
into
cities
because
immigrants
tend
to
settle
in
urban
areas.
At
present,
81
percent
of
the
inhabitants
in
the
US
live
in
cities.
Cultural
and
ethnic
diversity
adds
a
unique
flavor
to
cities
that
is
expressed
through
distinct
neighborhoods,
restaurants,
places
of
worship,
museums,
nightlife
and
multicultural
learning
environments.
Unique
musical
forms,
such
as
jazz,
rock
and
roll,
Chicano
music,
and
the
blues,
grow
in
the
US
by
mixing
a
variety
of
culturally
distinct
musical
traditions
to
create
a
new
form.
At
the
executive
(行政的)
level,
the
country
is
headed
by
a
mixed?race
president;
two
posts
on
the
Supreme
Court
are
held
by
members
of
the
country's
two
largest
minorities.
There
is
also
diversity
in
state
and
local
governments.
Without
its
rich
mixture
of
races
and
cultures,
America
would
not
be
the
nation
that
it
is
today.
Founded
upon
the
basis
of
equality
and
freedom,
America
acts
as
a
stage
where
different
cultures
not
only
co?exist
peacefully,
but
develop
well.

Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
My
daughter
and
I
just
went
to
the
local
store
to
get
some
snack
food
for
our
film
day.
As
usual,
my
daughter
helped
me
by
pushing
the
trolley,
placing
our
shopping
on
the
counter,
packing
it
in
the
bag
for
me
and
using
my
bank
card
to
pay
as
I
couldn't
reach
the
card
machine.
This
was
just
a
normal
trip
to
the
shop
apart
from
one
thing
that
was
different
for
us
today!
We
were
about
to
leave
when
a
young
man
in
a
blue
shirt
with
brown
hair
stopped
us.
He
spoke
to
my
daughter
and
asked
me
if
it
was
OK
that
he
bought
my
daughter
some
sweets
for
being
so
helpful
and
caring.
My
daughter
chose
a
bag
of
sweets
and
he
went
to
pay,
but
he
saw
another
bag
of
sweets
he
thought
my
daughter
would
like
and
asked
me
if
she
was
allowed
to
have
them.
Needless
to
say,
it
was
hard
for
me
to
hold
back
my
tears
because
of
the
kindness
he
had
shown
us
both.
My
daughter
and
I
thanked
him
but
he
didn't
want
to
be
thanked.
When
he
left
the
store,
he
said,
“Please
don't
thank
me.
If
the
world
had
a
few
more
kind
people,
it
would
be
a
much
better
place
to
live.
If
you
really
want
to
thank
me,
I
think
you
can
help
others
who
need
your
help.”
I'm
still
so
shocked
at
the
kindness
this
man
has
shown
us.
Not
only
did
he
take
his
time
to
stop
and
see
how
much
my
7?year?old
daughter
helped
me,
but
he
also
taught
her
a
very
valuable
lesson:
If
you're
kind
to
others,
then
others
will
be
kind
in
return!
My
daughter
has
been
helping
me
in
so
many
ways
since
I
was
in
my
wheelchair.
She
is
my
rock
and
without
her
I'd
be
lost.
She
keeps
me
going
in
the
darkest
of
my
days
with
her
smile.
She
lights
up
my
entire
world.
答案
Paragraph
1:
I
recalled
the
time
after
I
was
injured
in
an
accident.
I
was
sent
to
the
hospital
after
I
was
injured.Hearing
the
news,
my
daughter
went
to
the
hospital.
Tears
fell
from
her
eyes
when
she
saw
me
at
that
moment.
The
doctor
asked
her
to
sign
her
name
and
operated
on
me.
The
operation
was
successful
but
I
had
to
stay
in
a
wheelchair.
Paragraph
2:
My
daughter
said
that
she
could
become
my
legs
from
then
on.
I
saw
determination
from
her
eyes.
In
the
morning
she
bought
food
for
me
in
the
local
store
before
she
went
to
school.
In
the
evening
she
shared
sweets
with
me
and
slept
with
me
at
night
in
order
to
look
after
me.
Seeing
she
was
so
helpful,
my
neighbors
helped
us.
We
are
thankful
for
their
kindness.
