Former Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz grew up in a New York City housing project. His early options were limited and he could hardly dream about starting an international business. In 1961, the whole family was left with no income because his father broke an ankle working as a truck driver. Watching his father lying on the bed with his leg in a cast, Schultz decided to do something different in life. Schultz played football in high school and managed to get an athletic scholarship to Northern Michigan University. He became the first college graduate in his family.
Schultz’s first job after finishing school was in sales at Xerox, where he was supposed to sell word processors. Then he took another job in sales at Hammarplast, a housewares (家居用品) business. However, he grew impatient with these two jobs soon. Schultz first came across Starbucks while still working for Hammarplast. He was struck by the passion(热情) of the founders Gerald Baldwin and Gordon Bowker and their courage in selling the product that would appeal only to a specific niche(市场定位) of coffee enthusiasts. It took a whole year for Schultz to persuade Baldwin and Bowker to hire him as the head of marketing. The new position meant that Schultz was going to travel around the world and represent Starbucks.
His fate changed when the company sent him to an international housewares exhibition in Milan. Schultz had an epiphany(顿悟) when he saw the Italian espresso tradition. The people in Italy had a personal relationship with coffee.
Schultz came back to America with new ideas. He wanted to replicate the Italian tradition in Starbucks. The founders felt differently. He then decided to leave Starbucks to start his own coffee company. The new company caught on quickly. Eventually, it managed to buy Starbucks. Schultz became the CEO of Starbucks Corporation and he is one of the wealthiest people on the planet.

In an effort to create more environmentally friendly vacations, Norwegian cruise operator (挪威邮轮公司) Hurtigruten is making a plan to power its ships using dead fish. This doesn’t mean that Norwegian cruise liners will be doubling as fishing ships; the dead fish will come from Norway’s good fishing industry, not as any sort of by-product of the cruise industry. But it s a plan that promises to make use of the leftovers and offcuts of the fishing industry to make shipping less wasteful.
So how do dead fish get transformed into fuel? Organic waste of any kind can be mixed to produce a type of fuel known as biogas(沼气). If it sounds smelly, well…it is, and not just because of the dead fish. Biogas can also have small amounts of hydrogen sulphide, a chemical compound, which can give it a bad egg smell. It’s not a particularly attractive process, but don’ t worry: those smells won’t be given off from your cruise ship’s exhaust. The raw materials in the biogas can be cleaned, which creates liquid biogas.
What others see as a problem, we see as a resource and a solution, said Daniel Skjeldam Hurtigruten chief executive."By introducing biogas as fuel for cruise ships, Hurtigruten will be the first cruise company to power ships with fossil-free(无化石的)fuel”
Biogas is certainly cleaner than heavy oil, but it s not exactly carbon-free. So while the plan might be a creative way of making use of organic waste, as well as helping to get rid of fossil fuels, it’s not a perfect solution. However, it’s at least a step in a better direction. And the company will also be stopping single-use plastics on its 17 cruise ships. It’s good to see change happening in a dirty industry.

Most of us learned what we know about eye color from a chart in grade-school biology. You know two blue-eyed parents are going to have blue-eyed kids. But the story of how eye color is passed down is more complicated(复杂的) than we’re taught.
Humans get their eye color from melanin(黑色素), which also determines skin and hair shades. Melanin is good at absorbing light, which is especially important for the iris(虹膜), the function of which is to control how much brightness can enter the eyes. Once it passes through the irises, the majority of the visible light goes to the retina(视网膜), where it’s translated into images by the brain. The little that isn’t absorbed by the iris is reflected back, producing what we see as eye color. That color depends on the kind and amount of melanin a person is born with.
Though we used to think eye color just came from a simple pattern of inheritance (遗传), in recent years scientists have found that it’s also shaped by many genes acting together. What’s more, tiny changes, or mutations(突变), in a gene can result in different shades in the iris.
The two genes currently thought to be most strongly linked with human eye color are OCA2 and HERC2. OCA2, the gene we used to think was the only player in eye color, controls the production of the P-protein and the organelles that make and transport melanin. Different mutations in the OCA2 gene increase or decrease the amount of protein that’s produced in the body, changing how much melanin is sent to the irises. The HERC2 gene, meanwhile, acts like a helicopter parent (直升机父母) for OCA2. Different mutations in this gene act as a switch that turns OCA2 on and off and determines how much P-protein it produces.
Those are just the two genes we know about in detail so far. Newer studies have linked as many as 16 genes to eye color, all of which pair with OCA2 and HERC2 to generate different iris colors and patterns. With all these genes and their structural changes, it’s hard to say for sure what a child’s eye color will be based on their parents’.

The?pursuit?of?happiness
What is happiness? 16 However, most of us would probably agree that happiness is a feeling that life is good, that our surroundings are a bit brighter and more beautiful than usual, and that we’re in harmony with family and friends.
For our ancestors, being happy was not a priority(优先考虑的事情). While the concept of happiness has been around for thousands of years, for much of that time, humans were simply struggling to survive. 17 Today, though, most of us regard happiness as something we have a right to, and therefore something to be actively pursued(追求).
The increasing interest in the topic is being given extra weight by the realization that material wealth alone is not making us happier. In 1974, the US economist Richard Easterlin carried out some research on happiness. 18 Then economists and social scientists got to work trying to find out what---if not material wealth---makes us happy.
There is no final answer, but Richard Layard, a professor at the London School of Economics, suggests that our relationships, work satisfaction and mental health are more important for us as individuals than how much we earn. 19
For individuals in search of a better life, the market for books on happiness is booming(繁荣). In 2018, three million self-help books were sold in the UK. Each book promises a great new life. But is there a book that looks at whether self-help books actually work? 20 It’s called Help Me!: How self-help has not changed my life.
A.?Yes.?There is!
B.?They?knew?nothing?about?happiness.
C?Happiness?can?mean?something different?to each?of?us.
D.?As?societies,?we?are?happier?if?there?is?social trust?and?freedom.
E.?It?was?almost?impossible?for?them?to?think about?quality?of?life.
F.?Of?course,?I?found?a?lot?of?titles?of?self-help books?in?my?local?bookshop.
G.?It?showed?that?increased?wealth?did?not?seem to?be?making?people?happier.

I am Li Hua, president of the Student Union. I'm honored to give a talk here. The winter vacation is drawing near. I'd like to remind you it is important to stick to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for you.
Firstly, please make sure you don't abandon the good habit of keeping early hours. Early risers tend to be healthier and achieve more. Moreover, a balanced diet is beneficial to health. It is suggested that we never skip meals. Nor should we allow ourselves to be addicted to junk food. Always make conscious choices when it comes to food because we are, to some extent, what we eat. Finally, we should limit the time we spend on screen-based activities and take an active part in sports instead.
Follow the tips above, and you will live a healthy life. Wish you happiness in the coming summer vacation!
Thank you or your listening!

W: Then, when I got to school, I realized that I had left my schoolbag at home.
Text 9
M: Good afternoon, YMCA. May I help you?
W: Yes. I’d like to ask about women’s exercise classes.
M: We have some classes starting the week of February 20th for seven weeks. We have fitness exercise during the afternoon or evening. There are exercises in the pool, too.
W: How much does it cost?
M: It depends. Some classes meet twice a week, and they cost $14 on average. Some of them meet three times a week, and they average $20.
W: How much does it cost if you are a member of the YMCA?
M: It’s half price. YMCA members pay half price.
W: I see. YMCA members pay half of the 14 and half of the 20.
M: That’s right. And classes start in February. If you’re not a YMCA member, you can register on February 16th.
W: All right.

M: Next to me are my three assistants. On the left is Mary and on the right is Gladys. Between them is Daniel. Gladys is in charge of the computer lab and you should see her to reserve time on any of our computers. Daniel is the head of our reference department. He can help you find materials when you’re investigating subjects or writing papers. Mary is in charge of keeping all the books and periodicals organized. This is an important job because if everything wasn’t in its proper place, it would be impossible to find the information we need. The hours are on the paper you were given when you came in. We’re open every day except Sundays and holidays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Sometimes we’re open on special hours. For instance, during family week when your parents are invited to visit the school, we’re open every evening. If there are no questions, then Mary, Gladys and Daniel will show you around the facilities and explain everything to you.
