Grade 8 Module 6 A famous story Unit 1 She was sitting by the river.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today, I feel honored to have the chance to present my lesson plan here. The lesson plan I am going to present is from Grade 8 Module 6 A famous story. I’d like to explain how to teach and why to do so from the following 6 aspects: the analysis of teaching material, the theoretical basis, teaching methods and studying ways, teaching procedure and blackboard design .
PartⅠ Analysis of the teaching material
My understanding of the teaching material includes 5 parts: status and function, analysis of the students, teaching aims and demands, teaching key points and difficulties, and teaching aids.
1. Status and function
This period of teaching content is from Unit1 She was sitting by the river.The topic of this unit is about a famous story. This is an interesting topic for students. So all the activities in this unit are helpful to arose students’ learning interest.
In this period, we'll learn how to use the phrase "past on-goings" to talk about experience.The students will learn some knowledge about jobs and have a better understanding of it. In fact, this lesson helps the students understand the target language and use it. Meanwhile, it helps the students practice listening, speaking skills.So it's very important to learn this lesson well.
2. Analysis of the students
The students have learnt English for more than one year. Firstly, they have learnt some English and can express their own opinions in English;secondly, they are interested in learning English; thirdly they have a strong memory and the ability to learn it well, but most of them are afraid to speak English. Especially,for this lesson, the students have learned some words of story, but some of them hardly to talk about their experiences. And this is what I'll will teach in this lesson.
Teaching aims and demands
According to the teaching materials, I design the following three objectives.
a) Knowledge Objectives:
First I will talk about knowledge objectives.Most Ss should have a full understanding of this period before class, and preview new some words. In this lesson, The students will master some new words and expressions such as suddenly,rabbit,party,fall,hole,strange and so on.Then the students will learn to use the new sentence structures, such as "what were you doing at 7 am yesterday " and "I was going to school." and so on.
b) Ability objectives
As for ability objectives,students should be the real master of the class. But most students are lack of independent learning abilities. In this class, I will encourage and help them to speak English by themselves. Since the main objective of speaking and listening course is to improve the Ss' speaking and listening ability, I'll give some material to improve their listening skills and give them opportunities to talk about the story and their experience with the new words and new sentence structures.
c) Moral objectives
Finally, I'll talk about the moral objectives. This lesson is about a famous story of Alice. Most of the students will learn the adventure of Alice. And I will make full use of the topic to help Ss to talk about their own experience to each other.
4.The teaching key points and difficulties
Now I will talk about the teaching key points. We should pay attention to these following two main points. The first one is to master the key words and new structures. The other one is to understand and use target language. The teaching difficulty is how to enable the students to use these sentence patterns correctly to talk about their experiences, and encourage students to cooperate well with their partners.
5. Teaching aids
I will use PPT, tape recorder, pictures and so on in this lesson.
Part Ⅱ The theoretical basis
Next, I am going to talk about the theoretical basis.This lesson is a speaking and listening course. According to the National English Curriculum, my teaching aims at promoting learner-contentedness. Therefore, the teaching process, the assessment procedures both reflect the principle of learner-centered approach. I will be the guide in the classroom teaching. I will make the most use of teaching methods, resources and ways of assessment so as to make teaching beneficial to all kinds of Ss. So in my class, I will give Ss more time to practise in pairs, work in groups after my presentation, it can improve their learning efficiency.
Part Ⅲ Teaching methods
Now, I will focus on the ways of teaching. As we all know, the main instructional aims of learning English in the middle school is to cultivate students' abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson, I mainly adopt the Communicative Approach , Task-based language teaching, Audio-visual method and pair & group work as the main teaching approaches.
That is to say, I'll let the Ss get a better understanding of the target language. I will give them enough chances to practice, and I will use pair work, group work, memory test and so on to let the students participate all kinds of activities. That is "Learning by doing, learning by using". It can improve their learning efficiency.
Part Ⅳ Studying ways
Next, I will focus on the studying ways. Firstly I will let the Ss pay attention to the key information in listening practice. Then, the students will make practice and discussion about their experiencs. I will design some various tasks to take full consideration of all kinds of students' abilities. Lastly the students will arose their interests in make story and learning English well.
PartⅤ. Teaching procedure
Next, let's come to the most important part, that is, the teaching procedure. It includes seven steps.
Step 1 Greeting and lead-in (4 mins)
The first step is greeting and Lead-in. It will cost three minutes. After greeting, I'll show Ss some fairy stories.
This step creates the teaching atmosphere and arises Ss' interest.
Step 2 Presentation and listening(5 mins)
Then is the second step: presentation. It will cost four minutes. In this part, I will introduce Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and let they know the characters in this story.
This activity introduces the story and lets Ss improve the listening ability.
Step 3 Reading and consolidation (13 mins)
Then is the third step: presentation. It will cost thirteen minutes. I'll give some questions and let Ss read the dialogue. Then Ss'll learn the new words, and finish some practice.
This activity aims to let Ss have a better understanding of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and consolidate the new words.
Step 4 Grammar and practice(6 mins)
Then the third step is: pair work. It will cost six minutes.In this period, I will introduce the past on-gongs, and give Ss chance to practice.
This activity aims at consolidating the language point, and strengthen Ss' spoken ability.
Step 5 Pair work (5 mins)
Then the fifth step is: pair work. It will cost five minutes. In this part, I will give students some different times to make conversations by using the target language, and check their result and ask other students by "--What were you doing at 7 am yesterday "
This activity can help the students become more familiar with the target languages and make them understand each other well.
Step 6 A survey(4 mins)
The sixth step is to do a survey. It will cost four minutes. In this part, I will list some different times and give Ss questions: "What were you doing at... ". Then I will ask students to work in groups and do a survey. After that, I will ask the Ss to present the report.
This activity will help the Ss have a better understanding of the use of past on-goings to describe experience.
Step 7 Summary(2mins)
The seventh step is summary. It will cost two minutes. First, I will ask more than one student to summarize what he/she have learned in this lesson. And then I will present my summary on the PPT.
It aims to consolidate what they have learned today and help Ss to establish the structures of language points.
Step 8 Homework(1min)
The last step is to assign the homework. It will cost one minute. There are three tasks. The first one is to let Ss read the conversation in activity 2 repeatedly. The second one is to finish activities 1-4 in the workbook.The third one is to let Ss talk about experience at school to parents.
The purpose for this homework is to help them revise what they learned,and improve Ss’ writing ability and consolidate the expressions.
PartⅥ. Blackboard design
Ok, this is my blackboard design. On the top is the title of this lesson. And I will write some key words and phrases on the left and the structures of the expressions on the right.
