Do you want to know something about the history of weather Don’t look at the sky. Don’t look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.
It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight and rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are closed together, then the climate was bad for the tree.
Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand---no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why
A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move. In this instance studying tree rings uncovers an exciting fact about the history of man.

It’s Pigs’ Hometown
The story happened during the Second World War. An old man lived in a small town of Germany. He had three sons and they all worked in the same factory where he had worked. After the war had begun, his sons were all made to join the army one after another and they all died in the fights. The old man was very sad. He didn’t have enough food and was often hungry. And nobody helped him and he didn’t know how to go on living.
It was a very cold winter night. The old man couldn’t go to sleep. He had been hungry for two days and it was so cold in his room that ice could be seen. He had to get up and began to run in the room until he lay down on the floor. The next morning he had to beg from door to door. He had been to a lot of cities and knew a lot.
Once he came to a village, but the villagers were all poor and couldn’t give him anything. He was too hungry to go to another village. He thought hard and found a way. He came to a police station and called out, “Hitler is a foolish pig!”
Out came an old policeman at once. He took the old man into a room, gave him some bread and a cup of tea. Then he said, “Don’t say so in our village, sir!”
“I’m sorry, sir,” said the old man. “I don’t know it’s Hitler’s home town.” “No, no, sir,” the policeman said in a hurry. “It’s pigs’ hometown!”
60. The old man’s sons joined the army because ________.
A. they had to do so B. they loved their country

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always closed.” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk ,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list.” said Michael Riera, writer of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years.” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create(创造) chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
63. “The door to his room is always closed” suggests that the son __ .
A. is always busy with his studies B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
C. keeps himself away from his parents D. begins to dislike his parents
64. What troubles Tina and Mark most is that __ .
A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as before

D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help

A.Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
B.Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco(旧金山). There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines(台词). I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets(毛毯).
About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho ” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for ” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
67. How did the write feel when she was walking home after work
A. Cold and sick B. Fortunate and helpful
C. Satisfied and cheerful D. Disappointed and helpless
68. From the first paragraph, we learn that the writer was busy ________.
A. solving her problem at the bank B. taking part in different city activities
C. learning acting in an evening school D. preparing for the first night show
69. In the fifth paragraph, why did the writer say she was dreaming
A. Someone offered to take her back home.
B. A red-haired man came to see her.
C. She heard someone call her name.
D. Her wallet was found in a garbage truck.
70. From the text, we can infer that the writer _________.
A. would stop working at night B. would stay on in San Francisco
C. would make friends with cleaners D. would give up her job at the bank.
IV. 任务型阅读 (共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的词。
Some people can eat what they want and never gain weight, but other people try hard to be careful about what they eat and yet still gain weight. Scientists are beginning to believe that a big reason for this may be genetic.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies store the energy from food as fat. Those people gain weight if they eat more than they need to each day. However, some other people may eat more than they need to, but their body is able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat. So, they stay slim.
Some scientists believe that one special gene may be the cause of this difference between people. Teams of scientists are studying this gene in mice. They are experimenting on two groups of laboratory mice. One group has the special “fat storing” gene, and the other does not. They give these two groups of mice a special diet with a lot of fat. They have found that the mice missing the special “fat storing” gene are not able to produce new body fat and have not gained weight. They hope if they are able to find this gene in humans and produce medicines that can stop it from working, then they may be able to prevent weight gain in humans.
The study of weight gain is important and needs to be continued, as more and more people have weight problems. In the United States over fifty per cent of the population is now overweight. This can cause serious health problems such as heart disease.
Medicines for weight control are not working very well because many of them cause problems with body systems. Some cause heart problems and others cause liver problems. It is important that new medicines are developed. However, it takes a long time to develop them. Before new medicines for weight control are available, we have to exercise and eat a good diet. We must pay attention to our own weight control.
Is being fat a genetic problem
