We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. Our car looked like a flower shop inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and then my wife noticed the cupboard.
It was tall and narrow, and it stood outside a furniture shop. “ Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack (行李架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”
What could I do Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer, and the cupboard was tied on to the roof-rack. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, ”There is a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder ”
In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.
I was puzzled. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I have just down the road.”
He was staring at our load: first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well,” he said, laughing, “It’s a cupboard you’ve got here! We thought it was…er, something else.”
My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors.
The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.
Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange is a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are talking or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for offices or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.
Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colors remind people of warm days and the cool colors remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.
67. Which of the following colors belong to cool colors
A. Yellow, green. B. Blue, violet.
C. Black, blue. D. Brown, white.
68. Which of the following statements is not true
A. Sociable people like warm colors.
B. Warm colors can make people excited.
C. People who like to be with others don’t like red.
D. Where there are warm colors, people want to be active.
69. Which is the right color for different rooms
A. Red or orange for offices. B. Orange for dining-rooms.
C. Blue for bedrooms. D. Red for studies.
70. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. It shows the reason why people think some colors are warm and others are cool.
B. Warm colors remind people of warm days.
C. Cool colors remind people of cool days.
D. People have an agreeable opinion of warm colors and cool colors.

In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposed rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is , however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.
