It was almost the worst birthday of Abraham Lincoln’s life.
On February 11, 1861 (the day before he turned fifty-two), Lincoln left for Washington to become the nation’s sixteenth President. As he left home in Springfield, Illinois, Lincoln handed his son Robert a black oilskin(油布) bag, and told him to keep it carefully. He did not tell Robert what was inside.
Unknown to his seventeen-year-old son, Lincoln had placed his newly written inaugural speech in the bag. It was to be the most important speech he ever made. And it was his only copy.
When the train arrived in Indianapolis----the first stop on the long journey---Lincoln rode off in a special carriage without his family. Robert walked from the station to the local hotel.
When Robert arrived at the hotel, he learned that his family抯 rooms were not ready. So he asked that the bag should be held at the front desk. Then he went off to be with friends.
On his return, Robert found his father waiting anxiously. Where was the bag? Robert explained that he had checked it at the desk.
An angry Lincoln sped to the hall and leaped over the front desk. He began searching through a huge pile of luggage.
As puzzled guests looked on, Lincoln dragged from the pile a familiar-looking black bag and opened it, only to find someone else抯 dirty clothes. It was the wrong bag. Back he went to the pile.
At last he found the valuable bag and the speech inside. Lincoln handed it to his son and said strictly, 揘ow you keep it!
It was the one and only time, Robert said, that his father had ever lost his temper at him. But with his speech fond and his birthday yet to be celebrated, Abraham Lincoln grew cheerful. As Robert proudly recalled, “Father did not scold(责骂).”

How Important Is Fashion?
Is looking fashionable more important than being comfortable? Many people seem to think so, judging by the things they wear. But fashion is not everything. It is more important to be a healthy and good person.
People go to great lengths to be fashionable. Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes that create blisters(水泡), tight body shapers that limit blood flow, and sticky false eyelashes(假睫毛). Men and women alike spend time and money on produces that change their natural hair color and use hot irons and blow dryers to curl or straighten their hair. Some people spend several hours a day in front of a mirror. Is fashion important enough to spend so much time and effort on changing how you look like?
If the purpose of fashion is to make a person feel good, it does not make sense that he or she would go through so much discomfort to be fashionable. Fashion should not come first. People should prioritize(优先考虑)being healthy and positive. What people wear does not indicate anything about their personalities. Instead of going on strict diets and starving, why not eat some healthy foods and then exercise? By doing these things, you can keep a healthy lifestyle and truly grow as a person.

7. Which of the following activities would the author most likely recommend?
A. Shopping for bargain clothes. B. Starting a new diet with a friend.
C. Going skating with friends. D. Changing the hairstyle every week.
8. Why does the author include questions in the text?
A. To enrich the content. B. To introduce a new topic.
C. To reflect different attitudes.
D. To make readers think and give their opinions.

Roger Rolls was the first black governor in the history of New York State, USA. He was born in one of New York’s dishonorable slums (贫民窟). The children born here rarely did good work after they grew up. However, Roger Rolls was an exception, for he was not only admitted to the university, but also he became a governor.
At one of the press conferences, a reporter asked him, “What made you become the governor?” Faced with more than 300 journalists, Rolls did not mention his struggle but only spoke of his primary school schoolmaster---Pierre Paul.
In 1961, Pierre Paul was engaged as the director and principle of Nobita Primary School. When he entered this school, he found the children here didn抰 cooperate with the teachers. Pierre thought up many ways to guide them, but none was effective. Later, he found these children were very superstitious(迷信的), so when he gave lectures, he added a program of palm reading as a means of fortune-telling, with which he encouraged the students.
When Rolls jumped to the platform with his small hands stretched out, Pierre Paul said, “As soon as I see your slim little fingers, I know you will be the governor of New York State in future. At that moment, Rolls was shocked because only his grandmother inspired him once, saying that he could become captain of a five-ton ship. This time, Pierre Paul said he could become governor of New York State, so he remembered that remark and believed him.
From that day on, the “New York State Governor” was like a banner (旗帜) that constantly inspired him to study energetically and make progress. Rolls no longer stained his clothes with mud, nor did he speak in foul language. He began to straighten his back when he was walking. In the next more than 40 years, he demanded himself according to the identity of a governor. At the age of 51, he finally became the governor of New York State.
Put up a banner of faith for yourself and you will have the drive to struggle and the dynamism of life!

There are really two kinds of sleep:good sleep or bad sleep. As college students,we should take our sleeping quite seriously.Sure,we can have a good night's sleep, but then exams roll in and we have to kick studying into high gear. This kick causes us to sleep less and doze off more.It is a nice feeling every once in a while to doze off while studying or in class, but think about the consequences.Your teachers become angry with you,or your grades can suffer because of a bad test grade. So you try to keep yourself up when you feel that a doze moves slowly to you.
Stress can also cause sleep deprivation(缺少).We stress over grades, family problems, relationships, and so on.It seems hard for us to get rid of stress, but there is a simple solution to help prevent stress:naps.I'm sure everyone on the planet knows that a nap can be an excellent refresher. So next time you feel stressed just take a nap after class or after lunch.
Even though stress is a big reason why people have a hard time falling asleep, there is an even bigger reason.Technology is most likely the major reason why people have trouble falling asleep. We call, text, email,or do some other things at night;I'm guilty of watching TV before I fall asleep.Even while we are sleeping, our phones can ring and interrupt a good night's sleep. However, some people can sleep so deeply that the phone doesn't even bother them.Although this may be the case,I'm sure a lot of people would actually answer the phone and immediately fall back asleep.
There are many reasons why we have bad sleep, but actually it's up to us to solve the problem to sleep well. The eight hours of sleep can actually make a difference every day.
12.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Naps will reduce people's stress.
B.All students are facing sleeping problems.
C.Family problems have caused sleep disorder.
D.Sleeping makes people more stressed.
13.Why do the college students sleep less and doze off more?
A.Because they take their sleeping quite seriously.
B.Because they have to devote their time to study.
C.Because they like to doze off while studying in class.
D.Because they play computer games at night.
14.We can know from the third paragraph that .
A.there is no effective solution to getting rid of stress
B.technology causes people to sleep less
C.people prefer watching TV to having a sleep
D.the author sleeps like a log in most cases
15.It can be concluded from the passage that .
A.watching TV is mainly responsible for less sleep
B.it is better to refuse to answer the phone at night
C.we can decide whether we can sleep well
D.getting more sleep a day is the best solution
