I like food, especially if someone else cooks it. That’s what my husband is doing as I write this. The man loves to cook. 16-year-old Mike was told he was going to the Mashan School in Guizhou. He tried to imagine how serious the drought(旱灾) was for the students at that school. However, he realized it was more serious than he had imagined when he saw the sign “DON’T wash clothes with water, or you will be punished.”
Because of drought, the school has been short of water for a long time. Each student has only one bottle of water every day for washing and drinking. The drought has made the poor students much poorer.
Mike is a student from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. He took part in the school’s Rain & Bow Project from April 2 to 10.
The project idea came from Mike’s principal(负责人). One day, she heard a sad story about Li Guoxian, a poor girl in the Mashan School, who stopped going to school because of drought. The principal started this project to help the school. In one day, 3,000 students made over 10,000 donations of water, books and clothes.
Mike and other four students went to the Mashan School and gave the donations with five teachers. They visited poor families, made surveys and had classes at the school.
Mike also found the school’s learning environment quite poor. “The blackboards and playground are too shabby to use,” he said.“Besides, there really aren’t enough teachers. A teacher has to teach both history and English, and even the cook is a class teacher. ”

Many Chinese students are good at English grammar, but their spoken English is so poor that they are afraid to speak in class or have a talk with others. There may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to express themselves clearly because of a limited(有限的)vocabulary. The useful way is to enlarge their vocabulary. However, you can still communicate with others with a limited vocabulary, if you are active. Others will understand you with the help of your body language.
Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Because they are shy and nervous, sometimes they may make mistakes easily. Yet we should know what we aim at is FLUENTCE(流利) not ACCURACY(精确) when speaking. So we should speak as quickly and well as we can, even though sometimes we may use a wrong word or tense(时态), but it doesn’t matter because others will still understand you.
The third reason is that they don’t pay enough attention to listening to what others are saying. So while you are speaking, you can't find the suitable topic or words to say. You have one mouth but two ears! What you hear is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are passive(被动的) language learners. They just sit there waiting for speaking chances, and don't actively look for chances to improve their spoken English. All they can get is to accept the fact that their English remains poor.
“Practice makes perfect ".So please be active from now on, try to catch every chance to speak wherever you go.

Dear students,
Our government is aiming to build “a conservation—oriented society".I think it is every citizen’s duty to achieve this goal.
As middle school students, what should we do?
We should form the habit of saving water. When we brush our teeth, we should turn off the tap. We can take shorter showers than before. At the same time, we should save the electricity/the power. When we leave our classroom or our homes, we should turn off the light. We can ask our parents and friends to save energy, too. When we do not use our computers or TVs, we should turn them off. We can save paper by using both sides of it. Also, we can reuse old textbooks. What’s more, we should not waste food because we cannot get food easily. It is good for us to use clothes bags or baskets to go shopping./We can tell our parents ,friends and relatives to take part in this activities. It is helpful to build “a conservation—oriented society".
