By
the
end
of
the
century,if
not
sooner,the
world's
oceans
will
be
bluer
and
greener
thanks
to
a
warming
climate,according
to
a
new
study.
At
the
heart
of
the
phenomenon
lie
tiny
marine
microorganisms(海洋微生物)
called
phytoplankton.Because
of
the
way
light
reflects
off
the
organisms,these
phytoplankton
create
colourful
patterns
at
the
ocean
surface.Ocean
colour
varies
from
green
to
blue,depending
on
the
type
and
concentration
of
phytoplankton.Climate
change
will
fuel
the
growth
of
phytoplankton
in
some
areas,while
reducing
it
in
other
spots,leading
to
changes
in
the
ocean's
appearance.
Phytoplankton
live
at
the
ocean
surface,where
they
pull
carbon
dioxide(二氧化碳)
into
the
ocean
while
giving
off
oxygen.When
these
organisms
die,they
bury
carbon
in
the
deep
ocean,an
important
process
that
helps
to
regulate
the
global
climate.But
phytoplankton
are
vulnerable
to
the
ocean's
warming
trend.Warming
changes
key
characteristics
of
the
ocean
and
can
affect
phytoplankton
growth,since
they
need
not
only
sunlight
and
carbon
dioxide
to
grow,but
also
nutrients.
Stephanie
Dutkiewicz,a
scientist
in
MIT's
Center
for
Global
Change
Science,built
a
climate
model
that
projects
changes
to
the
oceans
throughout
the
century.In
a
world
that
warms
up
by
3℃,it
found
that
multiple
changes
to
the
colour
of
the
oceans
would
occur.The
model
projects
that
currently
blue
areas
with
little
phytoplankton
could
become
even
bluer.But
in
some
waters,such
as
those
of
the
Arctic,a
warming
will
make
conditions
riper
for
phytoplankton,and
these
areas
will
turn
greener.“Not
only
are
the
quantities
of
phytoplankton
in
the
ocean
changing,”
she
said,
“but
the
type
of
phytoplankton
is
changing.”
And
why
does
that
matter?Phytoplankton
are
the
base
of
the
food
web.If
certain
kinds
begin
to
disappear
from
the
ocean,Dutkiewicz
said,
“it
will
change
the
type
of
fish
that
will
be
able
to
survive.”Those
kinds
of
changes
could
affect
the
food
chain.
Whatever
colour
changes
the
ocean
experiences
in
the
coming
decades
will
probably
be
too
gradual
and
unnoticeable,but
they
could
mean
significant
changes.“It'll
be
a
while
before
we
can
statistically
show
that
the
changes
are
happening
because
of
climate
change,”Dutkiewicz
said,“but
the
change
in
the
colour
of
the
ocean
will
be
one
of
the
early
warning
signals
that
we
really
have
changed
our
planet.”
1.What
are
the
first
two
paragraphs
mainly
about?
A.The
various
patterns
at
the
ocean
surface.
B.The
cause
of
the
changes
in
ocean
colour.
C.The
way
light
reflects
off
marine
organisms.
D.The
efforts
to
fuel
the
growth
of
phytoplankton.
2.What
does
the
underlined
word“vulnerable”in
Paragraph
3
probably
mean?
A.Sensitive.
B.Beneficial.
C.Significant.
D.Unnoticeable.
答案:A
3.What
can
we
learn
from
the
passage?
A.Phytoplankton
play
a
declining
role
in
the
marine
ecosystem.
B.Dutkiewicz's
model
aims
to
project
phytoplankton
changes.
C.Phytoplankton
have
been
used
to
control
global
climate.
D.Oceans
with
more
phytoplankton
may
appear
greener.
But
in
some
waters,such
as
those
of
the
Arctic,a
warming
will
make
conditions
riper
for
phytoplankton,and
these
areas
will
turn
greener.”
4.What
is
the
main
purpose
of
the
passage?
A.To
assess
the
consequences
of
ocean
colour
changes.
B.To
analyse
the
composition
of
the
ocean
food
chain.
C.To
explain
the
effects
of
climate
change
on
oceans.
D.To
introduce
a
new
method
to
study
phytoplankton.

1.cheerful
2.the
3.but
4.who
The
little
5.Wherever
6.saying
7.spoken
8.to
next
9.protection
10.could
Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号).Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize(强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Module

Tell

You

M:Actually,
that's
my

my

I

was
a
big

here
yesterday.Two

W:I
saw
it

their

if
it's
just
because
they
are
brand
new.
M:They
look
nice
with
your

didn't
you
try
them

W:No,
I
got
them
through
a

M:No
wonder.I
don't
know
why
so
many
people
shop
online.You
never
know
what
you're
getting.
W:I
love
it.It's
so
much
simpler
than
going
to
a
store,
and
there
are
more
choices.
M:Yeah,
but
what
if
you
get
the
wrong

W:Actually,
their
return

are
very
good.The
only
problem
is
that
it
can
take
several
weeks

M:So,
will

it

W:It
was

M:Yeah,
although
it

still
quite

W:Well,
what
do

would
have

M:I
do

once,
though,
we
had
some
very
hot

W:I

was
quite
worrying.I
didn't

M:I

on
where

you

W:That's
fine.My

I

where

W:A

it

M:Yes,
it
is
very
popular
with
visitors.So
what
were
you
doing

W:We
were
just
at
the

came
to

her

W:But
there

is

can't

we

all
of
the

such

W:It's
been
six
hours
since
the
water

M:How
much
longer
until
it's
back
on?
W:Nobody
in
the

knows
for
sure.The
repairmen
think
it
will
take
three
more
hours,but
the
apartment
manager
believes
it
will
last
until
tomorrow
morning.Our
neighbors
say
they
have
gone
for
two
days
without
water
when
there
was
a
problem
before.
M:Two
days!
I
can't
wait
that
long!
W:Don't
be
silly!
We'll
just
go
to
the
corner
store
and
get
some
more
bottles
of
water.I
think
10
liters
wouldn't
be
enough.I
know
what
you're
going
to
say.They
might
be
out
of
water,
because
the
people
in
the
building
will
all
be
buying
water.
If
that's
so,
we'll
walk
farther
to
another
store.We
could
buy
20
liters
and
take
a
taxi
back
home.Is
that
a
good
plan?
M:In
that
case,
let's
buy
50
liters.If
the
water
is
off
for
two
days,
we
should
have
enough.

M:So
Naomi,
when

W:My

moved
here
in

I

M:How
did
you
start
learning
tennis?
W:My

my

me
how
to
play,
even

he
had
never
played
before.
M:How
is
that

W:He
heard
that
Serena
and
Venus
Williams'
father
had
taught
them
without
any
previous
knowledge
of
the
sport.And
they
became
two
of
the
greatest

ever.
M:Who
is
your
favorite
Williams
sister?
Serena
or
Venus?
W:Serena.I
met
her
when
I
was
14,
and
then
two
years
later
I
became
a
professional
player.
M:And
last
year
you
ended
up
beating
her
in
the
US

did
that
feel?
W:It
was
a
dream
that
came

it
was
also
hard,
because
I
am
naturally
a

M:Well,
you

well
as
the
impressive
architectural
landscape

Nanjing
and
the
Yangtz

which
runs
through
it.
While
the
size
is
certainly
impressive,
what
is
even
more
so
is
that
Rhythms

three?dimensional.Before
this,
the

Not
surprisingly,

a
big
hit
among
the

students,
who
think
that
it
is
so
much
better

We
all
have
our
ways
of
marking
time.As
a
photographer,
my

from
one
story
to
the
next.My
oldest
son

of

long
story
about
the
Endangered

Act.My
daughter
came
along
with
a

gray
wolves.
Twenty
stories
later,
though,
it's
the
story
in

that
I'll
remember
best.It
was
the
story
about
the
loss
of
wildness—and
the
story
during
which
my
wife
Kathy
got
cancer.That's
the
one
that
made
time
stand
still.I
stopped
taking
pictures
on
the
day
when
she
was
found
that
tumor(肿瘤),
and
cruelly,
that
day
was
Thanksgiving
Day.By
Christmas,
she
had
become
very
weak.There
were
some
days
when
she
was
so
sick
that
she
couldn't
watch
TV.
Early
examinations
save
time.But
ours
was
not
early.By
the
time
you
can
feel
the
tumor
yourself,
it's
often
bigger
than
the
doctor
wants
it
to
be.
Cancer
is
a
thief.It
steals
time.Our
days
are
already
short
with
worry.Then
comes
this
terrible
disease.But
cancer
also
has
the
power
to
change
us,
for
good.We
learn
to
simplify
our
life,enjoying
what
we
have
instead
of
feeling
sorry
for
what
we
don't
have.Cancer
even
has
made
me
a
better
father.My
work
made
me
a
stranger
to
my
three
kids
before.But
now
I
pay
attention
to
what
really
matters.This
is
not
a
race.This
is
a
new
way
of
life
and
new
way
of
seeing,
all
because
of
the
cancer.
In
the
end
each
of
us
has
so
little
time.We
have
less
of
it
than
we
can
possibly
imagine.And
we
even
assume
that
Kathy's
cancer
has
not
spread,
and
her
prognosis(预断)
is
good.We
try
to
make
our
time
all
countable
now,
enjoying
every
part
of
every
day.
I've
picked
up
my
camera
again.I
watch
the
sky,
searching
for
beautiful
light.When
winter
storms
come,
Kathy
and
I
gather
our
children
and
take
the
time
to
catch
snowflakes
on
our
tongues.After
all,
this
is
good.This
is
what
we're
living
for.

C
As
the
November
cold
begins
to
take
control
in
the
UK,
Bonfire
Night
(or
Guy
Fawkes
Night)
is
a
chance
to
wrap
up
in
winter
clothes
and
warm
up
by
the
fire.
Celebrated
on
November
5,
Guy
Fawkes
Night
has
been
part
of
British
history
since
1605,
when
Fawkes
was
found
trying
to
blow
up
parliament
with
barrels
of
gunpowder.Now,it
is
traditional
for
Britons
to
make
a
fake
“Guy”
every
year
from
old
clothes
and
burn
it
on
the
fire.
If
you
visit
a
small
town
in
the
southwest
of
the
country,you
might
see
men
from
the
village
run
through
the
crowded
streets
with
huge
wooden
barrels
on
their
backs,then
fill
them
with
tar
and
set
them
on
fire.And
in
Lewes,a
town
in
the
southern
English
county
of
Sussex,
different
groups
of
bonfire
societies
parade
the
streets,each
wearing
their
own
unique
outfits
and
carrying
a
giant
mascot
(吉祥物),which
they
burn
at
their
own
bonfire
party
at
the
end
of
the
evening.
Bonfire
Night
is
also
a
time
for
“chili
con
carne”,a
dish
made
from
slow?cooked
beef
mince,
tomatoes,kidney
beans,onions,and
spices.It
is
often
served
on
top
of
a
hot
jacket
potato
with
butter
and
cheese.It's
not
the
most
elegant
dish
in
the
world
but
it's
sure
to
warm
people
up
while
they
brave
the
cold
for
the
festivities.
But
for
many
Britons,
the
night
is
not
complete
without“bonfire
treacle
toffee(太妃糖)”,
which
is
also
known
as
“plot
toffee”,named
after
Guy
Fawkes'
plot
to
blow
up
parliament.The
toffee
is
rock
hard
and
is
often
broken
with
a
hammer
and
handed
out
to
guests.
Whether
it's
the
sound
of
fireworks
making
Britain
sound
like
a
war
zone,
the
hearty
winter
food,
or
the
excuse
to
light
a
huge
fire,
Bonfire
Night
has
something
for
everyone.Just
watch
out
for
those
rockets!

zone”可知,在Guy

56.in
57.who/that

58.the
“neither...nor...”
60.meaning
61.thoughtful
63.it
placed
it
on
the
table”可看出应填it,指代the

There
was

lovers
would
often
stay
together
on

enjoying
the

and
by
the
sea
appreciating
the
sunset.Everyone
who

them
could
not

envying
them
for
their
happy
love.
But
one
day,
the
man
was
severely
injured
and
lying
in
bed
in
hospital
for
several
days
without
any
consciousness.The
woman
guarded
him
by
the
bed
in
daytime,
calling
his
name
nonstop
while
at
night,
she
would
go
to
the
church
and
pray
to
God
until
her
tears
ran
up.
A
week
passed
by
and
the
man
was
still
sleeping.One
day,
God
was
finally
moved
by
her
love
and
persistence
and
would
like
to
do
her
a
special
favor.
God
said,
“I

quickly
on
the
condition
that
you
should
promise
to
be
a
butterfly
for

years.Do
you

with
the
deal?”
She
said
excitedly
and
firmly,
“Yes,
I
do!
I
won't
regret
doing
that.”
The
next
day,
the
woman
became
a
beautiful
butterfly,
flying
hurriedly
to
the
hospital.It
turned
out
that
the
man
came
to
his
consciousness
and
waked
up,
talking
with
a
doctor.She
could
not
hear
what
they
were
talking
about
because
she
could
not
fly
into
the
house.What
she
could
do
was
watch
her
beloved
through
the
windows
helplessly.
Another
spring
came
and
the
butterfly
was
in
a
hurry
to
fly
back
to
see
the
man,
only
to
realize
that
there
was
a
pretty
lady
standing
by
him.At
that
moment,
she
was
so
shocked
that
she
almost
fell
down
from
the
sky.She
could
hardly
believe
her
eyes.
People
were
talking
about
that
the
man
was
seriously
ill
during
Christmas
and
that
the
pretty
and
cute
female
doctor
took
good
care
of
him
and
that
finally
they
fell
in
sweet
love.
The
butterfly
felt
heart?stricken.In
the
following
days,
she
often
saw
the
man
take
the
woman
to
the
top
of
the
mountain
to
enjoy
the
sunrise
and
to
the
seaside
to
enjoy
the
sunset
together.
Paragraph
1:
The

all
these
should

belonged
to

now
they
belonged
to

could

nothing
but
rest
on
the

God

The

her

on

“No.”
God
felt
a

and

“Tomorrow

she

and
said,
“No,

1.In
this
passage,
the
underlined
word
“needles”
refers
to
________.
A.small,
thin
pieces
of
steel
B.long,
thin
pieces
of
branches
C.small,
pointed
pieces
growth
on
the
stem
of
a
plant
D.small,
thin
pieces
of
sticks
of
leaves”可知
needles
steel
2.Which
of
the
following

NOT
true?
A.The
greatest
desert
makers
are
humans.
B.There
aren't
any
living
things
in

deserts.
C.Deserts
have
been
growing

always
changing.
从“many
of
the
plants
even
have
hard
needles
instead
of
3.People
in
some

a
battle
against
________.
A.the
growth
of
deserts
B.the
disappearance
of
desert
plants
C.natural

D.congenital
climate
答案:A
Humans
can
make
deserts,
but
humans
can
also
prevent
their
4.We
can
guess
that
Mauritania
belongs
to
______.
A.Asian
countries
B.American
countries
C.European
countries
D.African
countries

he

when
a

asked

His

on
her

Deeply
moved,

the
whole

race.As
a

of
fact,
he
was
about
to
give
up
and
quit
before
that
point.
Years
later
the
young
woman
became
critically
ill.However,
the
local
doctors
were
unable
to
give
her
the
effective
medical
treatment.Finally
they
sent
her
to
a
hospital
in
the
big
city,
where
specialists
can
be
called
in
to
cure
her
rare
disease.Among
those
famous
specialists,
Dr
Howard
Kelly
was
called
in
for
the
consultation.
When
he
heard
the
name
of
the
town
she
came
from,
a
strange
light
filled
his
eyes.Immediately,
he
rose
and
went
