The
Conquest
of
the
Universe
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Our
house
was
directly
across
the
street
from
the
clinic
entrance
of
John
Hopkins
Hospital
in
Baltimore.
We
lived
downstairs
and
rented
the
upstairs
rooms
to
the
patients
at
the
clinic.
One
evening
as
I
was
fixing
supper,
there
was
a
knock
at
the
door.
I
opened
it
to
see
a
truly
awful
looking
man.
He's
hardly
taller
than
my
eight?year?old
son.
“Good
evening.
I've
come
to
see
if
you've
a
room.
I
came
for
a
treatment
this
morning
from
the
eastern
shore,
and
there's
no
bus
till
morning.”
He
told
me
he'd
been
hunting
for
a
room
since
noon
but
with
no
success.
“I
guess
it's
my
face...I
know
it
looks
terrible,
but
my
doctor
says
with
a
few
more
treatments...”
For
a
moment
I
hesitated,
but
his
next
words
convinced
me,
“I
could
sleep
in
this
chair
on
the
porch.
My
bus
leaves
early
in
the
morning.”
I
told
him
we
would
find
him
a
bed.
When
I
had
finished
the
dishes,
I
talked
with
him.
He
told
me
he
fished
for
a
living
to
support
his
five
children,
and
his
wife,
who
was
hopelessly
crippled
(残疾的)
from
a
back
injury.
He
didn't
tell
it
by
way
of
complaint.
Next
morning,
just
before
he
left,
as
if
asking
a
great
favor,
he
said,
“Could
I
come
back
and
stay
the
next
time?”
He
added,
“Your
children
made
me
feel
at
home.”
On
his
next
trip
he
arrived
a
little
after
seven
in
the
morning.
As
a
gift,
he
brought
a
big
fish
and
the
largest
oysters
(牡蛎)
I
had
ever
seen.
I
knew
his
bus
left
at
4:00
am
and
I
wondered
what
time
he
had
to
get
up
in
order
to
do
this
for
us.
In
the
years
he
came
to
stay
overnight
with
us
and
there
was
never
a
time
that
he
did
not
bring
us
vegetables
from
his
garden.
I
know
our
family
always
will
be
grateful
to
have
known
him;
from
him
we
learned
how
to
accept
the
bad
without
complaint
when
facing
the
misfortune.
本文介绍了一名渔夫的不幸遭遇,作者从中得到了人生启示——面对不幸时要学会毫不抱怨地接受,并以乐观的心态去面对。

Ⅱ.七选五
Trying
to
find
out
who
you
are
seems
simple
to
you.
__1__
But
answering
the
question
of
how
well
you
know
yourself
is
actually
really
difficult.
__2__
Imagine
all
the
things
you
did
and
liked
when
you
were
five
years
old.
It
is
almost
certain
that
there
is
a
long
list
of
differences
between
who
you
were
then
and
who
you
are
now.
So
how
are
you
going
to
fully
understand
yourself?
Luckily,
there
are
some
great
ways
to
get
to
know
yourself
better.
One
of
the
better
ways
is
to
spend
time
alone
with
your
thoughts.
It
doesn't
mean
just
sitting
in
a
chair,
thinking.
Anything
that
gets
you
in
a
relaxed,
but
active
state
of
mind
will
work
well.
__3__
Once
you're
in
this
state
of
mind,
you
can
start
noticing
and
questioning
your
behaviors
and
actions.
__4__
I
think
everyone
has
done
something
at
least
once
in
their
lives
for
which
they
didn't
have
a
reason.
It
can
take
some
time,
but
you'll
find
it.
Getting
to
know
yourself
means
understanding
your
behavior
and
responses
in
certain
situations.
__5__
The
experiences
I
received
through
my
first
trip
through
Asia
probably
gave
me
the
greatest
understanding
of
who
I
am.
How
well
would
you
do
in
a
speech
for
hundreds
of
people?
What
would
you
feel
like
after
a
white?water
rafting
trip?
If
you've
never
experienced
these,
then
you
can't
answer
the
questions.
A.This
is
the
best
state
to
learn
about
yourself.
B.After
all,
no
one
spends
more
time
around
you
than
yourself.
C.It's
important
to
always
know
who
you
are
and
who
you
are
becoming.
D.As
a
human
being,
you
are
going
through
character
changes
all
the
time.
E.That's
why
experiences
are
so
good
at
helping
you
understand
who
you
are.
F.See
yourself
not
through
your
own
eyes,
but
as
if
you
are
someone
else.
G.Pay
attention
to
something
you've
done
but
you
can't
fully
explain
the
reason
behind.

Dario's

said.“I
didn't

were
playing.
Maybe
we
should
play
some
quieter
music
at
night.”
“You
play,
you
play!”Mrs
Gilbert
said.“I
like
what
you
play!

loud
at
night.”She
pointed
to
the
book
she
had
given
them.“These
songs

music,”Dario's

Ⅱ.阅读理解
Standing
desks.
Whether
you
love
them
or
hate
them,
there
are
plenty
of
articles
to
back
up
whatever
opinions
you
have.
On
the
one
hand,
studies
have
shown
that
standing
desks
could
help
reduce
your
risk
of
obesity(肥胖)
and
diabetes
(糖尿病).
On
the
other
hand,
experts
have
said
standing
desks
don't
help
with
weight
loss
and
could
give
you
back
problems.
Now,
another
study
has
come
out,
which
is
in
favor
of
standing
desks.
Researchers
at
the
Texas
A&M
Health
Science
Center
found
that
standing
desks
helped
employees
get
more
done
during
the
day.
Though
the
results
might
not
be
suitable
for
all
types
of
work
environments,
they
should
give
supporters
of
standing
desk
a
reason
to
be
pleased.
Published
last
week
in
the
journal
IIE
Transactions,
the
study
followed
167
employees
in
a
call
center
over
six
months.Seventy?four
of
them
used
standing
desks,
and
researchers
found
that
they
were
46
percent
more
productive
than
those
who
sat
at
their
desks.
The
participants'
employer,
a
health
service
company
that's
not
named
in
the
paper,
sponsored
the
study
to
better
understand
the
returns
on
the
standing
desks
it
had
brought
for
the
office.
Productivity
was
determined
by
the
number
of
successful
calls
to
clients
that
the
health
and
clinical
advisors
made
per
hour.
The
company
earned
money
from
each
successful
call,
during
which
an
advisor
checked
on
a
client's
progress
in
an
exercise
program,
for
example,
or
checked
to
see
that
a
client
was
taking
proper
medication.
Employees
typically
made
between
400
and
500
calls
a
month,
and
the
company
wanted
them
to
average
about
two
successful
calls
each
hour.
Those
who
had
standing
desks
met
that_quota,_while
those
who
remained
seated
averaged
1.5
successful
calls
per
hour,
Gregory
Garrett,
a
public
health
doctoral
student
and
lead
author
on
the
study,
told
The
Huffington
Post.
If
an
advisor
was
unable
to
reach
a
client
over
the
phone,
that
was
counted
as
an
unsuccessful
call.
“Interestingly,
the
people
who
stood
actually
made
more
phone
calls
than
the
ones
who
sat,”Garrett
said.
The
results
almost
seem
too
good
to
be
true—after
all,
who
wouldn't
want
a
nearly
50
percent
boost
in
productivity
just
from
using
a
standing
desk?
“How
do
you
prove‘this
desk
makes
me
feel
happier,
and
I
feel
better’?
That's
not
going
to
pay
the
bills,”
Garrett
said.
“But,”
he
continued,“the
study
shows
that
standing
desks
can
in
fact
affect
a
company's
performance.
That's
really
significant.”

he

He
was

as
a

so
his
parents

him

that

which
was
why
he
became
an

M:But
now
he
wants
to

French?
W:Yes.He
and
Mom
have
always
liked
visiting
France
and
now
since
he's
retired,
he
wants
to
travel
there
more
often
and

M:It's
good
that
he's
making
plans,
but
don't
you
think
he
should
be
taking
it
easy
in
retirement
instead
of
studying
books
and
doing
exams?
W:Well,
he
gave
up
work
last
year
and
now
I've
left
home
and
have
a
family.Perhaps
he
needs
something
to

thanks.The
wound
is
pretty
painful
right
now,
but
I'm
feeling
a
lot
better
than
I
did
yesterday.
W:What
happened?
M:It
was
stupid.The
whole
thing
was
my
fault.I
was
trying
to
talk
on
my
phone
while
I
was
riding
my
bike.
W:So
you
were
riding
your
bike
with
one
hand?
M:Yeah.I
wasn't
even
looking
in
front
of
me.Then
at
the
last
second
I
tried
to
avoid
a
tree,
and
I
went
head
first
over
my
bike
handles.
W:Were
you

a
helmet?
M:Luckily,
I
ended
up
hurting
my
wrists
when
I
tried
to
stop
my
fall.
W:What
about
your
bike?
M:The
front
tire
is
flat
and
my
handles
are
bent.It
will
take
at
least
a
couple
of
weeks
for
me
to
get
it
fixed.
W:Will
you
be
able
to
play
basketball
this
week?
M:I'll
miss
tomorrow's
game,
but
I'll
be
able
to
play
on

W:That's
good
news,
at
least.

W:What
day
is
the
rubbish
collected?
M:Let's
see.It's
Tuesday
today,
so
it
will
be
the
day
after
tomorrow.
W:I'll
be
out
that
day,
so
could
you
sort
out
the
recycling
for
me?
There
are
three
bags—green,
red
and
blue.General
waste
goes
in
the
blue
one,
plastic
in
the
red
one
and
paper
in
the
other.
M:What
do
they
do
with
all
this
stuff?
W:The
paper
can
be
processed
to
make
more
paper.The
general
waste
is
buried
and
they
can
make
things
out
of
the
stuff
in
the
red
bag.That's
how
they
make
those
warm
jackets,
I
believe.
M:I
get
the
feeling
that
we
could
do
a
lot
more
with
waste
if
we
saw
its
true
value.In
some
poor
countries,
they
make
all
sorts
of
things
from
old
junk.I
used
to
have
a
toy
car
made
in
Africa
from
old
tin
cans
and
I've
seen
shoes
made
from
old
tires.
W:I
quite
agree.We
are
far
too
wasteful.Even
in
my
parents'
day
people
used
to
repair
things.Now
almost
everything
gets
thrown
away
when
it's
damaged.
But
you
know
what?I
would
actually
like
to
buy
some
of
those
shoes
you
mentioned.

We
have
some
good
news
in
the
story
of
the
shark
attack
just
off
the
coast
of
Florida
yesterday.An
8?year?old
boy
was
taken
into
a
Florida
hospital
with
severe
injuries.He
is
now
in
stable
condition
though.At
around
8:00
last
night,
Phil
Anderson
was
swimming
with
his
nephew
Jesse
Anderson
just
off
the
shore
at
Langdon
Beach.When
he
heard
Jesse's
screams,
he
immediately
knew
what
had
happened.Jesse
had
been
bitten
by
a
shark.When
he
pulled
Jesse
to
shore,
he
noticed
that
Jesse's
arm
had
been
bitten
off.Now
this
is
when
the
story
gets
really
interesting.The
man
went
back
into
the
water,
hit
the
shark
in
the
nose
and
wrestled
it
back
to
shore.At
this
point,
a
nearby
police
officer
killed
it
with
his
gun
and
immediately
called
rescue
services.While
they
were
waiting
for
the
emergency
helicopter
to
arrive,
the
two
men
cut
open
the
shark,
took
out
the
arm,
and
put
it
on
ice.Instead
of
performing
an
operation
on
the
boy
right
away,
the
emergency
team
transported
the
boy
to
the
nearest
hospital
where
he
was
given
blood.
We've
just
been
told
that
the
boy
will
make
a
full
recovery
and
eventually
be
able
to
use
his
arm
again.Doctors
also
say
that
without
the
quick?thinking
of
Phil
Anderson
and
rescue
services,
Jesse
might
have
died.As
for
Langdon
Beach,
it
has
been
closed
until
further
notice.

B
Most
of
us
spend
our
lives
seeking
the
natural
world.We
go
fishing,
sit
in
the
garden,
have
a
picnic,
live
in
the
suburbs
or
go
to
the
seaside.The
most
popular
leisure
activity
in
Britain
is
going
for
a
walk.When
joggers
jog,
they
don't
run
in
the
streets.Every
one
of
them
tend
to
go
to
the
park
or
the
river.
But
despite
this,
our
children
are
growing
up
nature
deprived(剥夺).I
spent
my
boyhood
climbing
trees.These
days,
children
are
robbed
of
these
ancient
freedoms,
due
to
problems
like
crime,
traffic,
the
loss
of
the
open
spaces
and
strange
new
ideas
about
what
is
best
for
children,
that
is
to
say,
things
that
can
be
bought,
rather
than
things
that
can
be
found.
The
truth
is
to
be
found
elsewhere.A
study
in
the
US:
families
had
moved
to
better
housing
and
the
children
were
assessed
for
ADHD—attention
deficit
hyperactivity
disorder(多动症).Those
whose
accommodation
had
more
natural
views
showed
an
improvement
of
19%;
those
who
had
the
same
improvement
in
material
surroundings
but
no
nice
view
improved
just
4%.
ADHD
is
one
of
the
great
problems
of
modern
childhood.One
study
after
another
indicates
that
contact
with
nature
gives
huge
benefits
to
ADHD
children.However,
we
spend
money
on
drugs
rather
than
on
green
places.
The
life
of
old
people
is
measurably
better
when
they
have
access
to
nature.The
increasing
concern
for
the
growing
population
of
old
people
is
in
quality
rather
than
quantity
of
years.And
study
after
study
finds
that
a
garden
is
the
single
most
important
thing
in
finding
that
quality.Even
problems
with
crime
and
aggressive
behaviour
are
reduced
when
there
is
contact
with
the
natural
world.
We
need
the
wild
world.It
is
essential
to
our
well-being,
our
health
and
our
happiness.
本文是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了接触大自然对儿童和老人有很多益处,还可以改善人们的生活质量。

C.shopping
in
the
supermarket
D.running
in
the
gym
答案:B

of
us
spend
our
lives
seeking

have
a
picnic,
live

the
suburbs

will
certainly
do
good
to
the

C.children
probably
spend
less
time
in
nature
nowadays
D.children
tend
to
be
happier
as
a
result
of
their
material
satisfaction
答案:C
解析:推理判断题。通读第二段可知,第一句“But
despite
this,
our

what
way
do
people
benefit
from
their
contact
with
nature?
A.Children
with
ADHD
can
be
cured.
B.A
garden
nearby
improves
the
quality
of
old
people's
life.
C.Problems
with
crime
and
violent
behavior
will
easily
be
solved.
D.Children's
performance
at
school

reduces
crime.
D.Man
can't
live
without
natural
areas.
答案:A

C
Before
the
1830s,most
newspapers
were
sold
through
annual
subscriptions
in
America,usually
$8
to
$10
a
year.Today
$8
or
$10
seems
a
small
amount
of
money,but
at
that
time
these
amounts
were
forbidding
to
most
citizens.Accordingly,newspapers
were
read
almost
only
by
rich
people
in
politics
or
the
trades.In
addition,most
newspapers
had
little
in
them
that
would
appeal
to
a
mass
audience.They
were
dull
and
visually
forbidding.But
the
revolution
that
was
taking
place
in
the
1830s
would
change
all
that.
The
trend,then,was
toward
the“penny
paper”—a
term
referring
to
papers
made
widely
available
to
the
public.It
meant
any
inexpensive
newspaper;perhaps
more
importantly
it
meant
newspapers
that
could
be
bought
in
single
copies
on
the
street.
This
development
did
not
take
place
overnight.It
had
been
possible(but
not
easy)to
buy
single
copies
of
newspapers
before
1830,but
this
usually
meant
the
reader
had
to
go
down
to
the
printer's
office
to
purchase
a
copy.Street
sales
were
almost
unknown.However,within
a
few
years,street
sales
of
newspapers
would
be
commonplace
in
eastern
cities.At
first
the
price
of
single
copies
was
seldom
a
penny—usually
two
or
three
cents
was
charged—and
some
of
the
older
well?known
papers
charged
five
or
six
cents.But
the
phrase
“penny
paper”caught
the
public's
fancy,and
soon
there
would
be
papers
that
did
indeed
sell
for
only
a
penny.
This
new
trend
of
newspapers
for
“the
man
on
the
street”
did
not
begin
well.Some
of
the
early
ventures(企业)
were
immediate
failures.Publishers
already
in
business,people
who
were
owners
of
successful
papers,had
little
desire
to
change
the
tradition.It
took
a
few
youthful
and
daring
businessmen
to
get
the
ball
rolling.

newspapers
in
America
before
the
1830s?

could
have
more
readers.

the
newspapers
of
the
new
trend
targeted
at?
A.Local
politicians.

Ⅲ.读后续写
One
weekend
in
July,
Jane
and
her
husband,
Tom,
had
driven
three
hours
to
camp
overnight
by
a
lake
in
the
forest.Unfortunately,
on
the
way
an
unpleasant
subject
came
up
and
they
started
to
quarrel.By
the
time
they
reached
the
lake,
Jane
was
so
angry
that
she
said
to
Tom,
“I'm
going
to
find
a
better
spot
for
us
to
camp”and
walked
away.
With
no
path
to
follow,
Jane
just
walked
on
for
quite
a
long
time.After
she
had
climbed
to
a
high
place,
she
turned
around,
hoping
to
see
the
lake.To
her
surprise,
she
saw
nothing
but
forest
and,
far
beyond,
a
snowcapped
mountain
top.She
suddenly
realized
that
she
was
lost.
“Tom!”she
cried.“Help!”
No
reply.If
only
she
had
not
left
her
mobile
phone
in
that
bag
with
Tom.Jane
kept
moving,
but
the
farther
she
walked,
the
more
confused
she
became.As
night
was
beginning
to
fall,
Jane
was
so
tired
that
she
had
to
stop
for
the
night.Lying
awake
in
the
dark,
Jane
wanted
very
much
to
be
with
Tom
and
her
family.She
wanted
to
hold
him
and
tell
him
how
much
she
loved
him.
Jane
rose
at
the
break
of
day,
hungry
and
thirsty.She
could
hear
water
trickling(滴落)somewhere
at
a
distance.Quickly
she
followed
the
sound
to
a
stream.To
her
great
joy,she
also
saw
some
berry
bushes.She
drank
and
ate
a
few
berries.Never
in
her
life
had
she
tasted
anything
better.Feeling
stronger
now,
Jane
began
to
walk
along
the
stream
and
hope
it
would
lead
her
to
the
lake.
As
she
picked
her
way
carefully
along
the
stream,
Jane
heard
a
helicopter.Is
that
for
me?Unfortunately,
the
trees
made
it
impossible
for
people
to
see
her
from
above.A
few
minutes
later,
another
helicopter
flew
overhead.Jane
took
off
her
yellow
blouse,
thinking
that
she
should
go
to
an
open
area
and
flag
them
if
they
came
back
again.

Kids'
health:Four
steps
for
fighting
stress
Everybody
gets
stressed
from
time
to
time.
__1__
Some
ways
of
dealing
with
stress—like
screaming
or
hitting
someone—don't
solve
much.
But
other
ways,
like
talking
to
someone
you
trust,
can
lead
you
to
solving
your
problem
or
at
least
feeling
better.
Try
taking
these
four
steps
the
next
time
you
are
stressed:
Get
support.
When
you
need
help,
reach
out
to
the
people
who
care
about
you.
Talk
to
a
trusted
adult,
such
as
a
parent
or
other
relatives.
__2__
They

have

such
as
dealing
with
a
test,
or
the
death
of
a
beloved
pet.
Don't
take
it
out
on
yourself.
Sometimes
when
kids
are
stressed
and
upset,
they
take
it
out
on
themselves.
Oh,
dear,
that's
not
a
good
idea.
Remember
that
there
are
always
people
to
help
you.
Don't
take
it
out
on
yourself.
__3__
Try
to
solve
the
problem.
After
you're
calm
and
you
have
support
from
adults
and
friends,
it's
time
to
get
down
to
business.
__4__
Even
if
you
can't
solve
it
all,
you
can
solve
a
piece
of
it.
Be
positive.
Most
stress
is
temporary.
Remember
stress
does
go
away,
especially
when
you
figure
out
the
problem
and
start
working
on
solving
it.
These
steps
aren't
magic,
but
they
do
work.
And
if
you
can
stay
positive
as
you
make
your
way
through
a
tough
time,
you'll
help
yourself
feel
better
even
faster.
__5__
