If only things were that simple. Supporters of the so?called Stone Age diet argue that farming practices introduced about 10,000 years ago are harmful to human health, and that we shouldn't eat grains or food made from milk, such as butter and cheese. Instead, they say, we should only eat plenty of lean meat (瘦肉) and fish, with fruit and raw vegetables on the side.
The idea, also called the caveman, or hunter?gatherer diet, has been around for decades and was discussed at a meeting of the British Society for Allergy, Environmental and Nutritional Medicine.
According to Lauren Cordain, a nutritionist at Colorado State University who presented the idea to the meeting, those following the meat?centered menu “lose weight and get healthy by eating the food you were designed to eat”. He says there is increasing evidence that a caveman diet can prevent and treat many common western diseases. Studies of islanders in Papua New Guinea who still live a hunter?gatherer lifestyle show they rarely suffer from heart disease.
But other nutritionists argue that cutting out whole food groups such as grains is just not a good idea.
“I would recommend anybody to eat lean meat and raw vegetables,” says Toni Steer of the MRC human nutrition research unit at Cambridge. “But what you're asking people to do is cut out a food group which is good for your health.”
Archaeologists say it's not even clear exactly how much of the various foods people actually ate during the Stone Age.
“There was no one Stone Age diet; diets of the past varied greatly,” says John Gowlett, an archaeologist at the University of Liverpool who also attended the conference. Prehistoric people in Africa probably ate less meat than many people think, he says, while those in the northern, icy areas were forced to eat only whatever animals they could catch.
“I'm not convinced that we know what Stone Age man ate,” agrees Andrew Millard, who researches ancient health and diet at Durham University. “The evidence we have only suggests the meat component of the diet. We get bones from animals they have eaten but we don't get the remains of any vegetables they have eaten because they rot (腐烂) away.”
1.To improve your health, Cordain suggests ________.
A.losing weight first
B.eating less meat and fish
C.going on the Stone Age diet
D.eating more fruit and vegetables
2.What is Steer's attitude towards eating grains?

3.In Millard's opinion, the evidence for the Stone Age diet ________.
A.shows nothing about the diet's vegetable component
B.tells us about ancient people's cooking methods
C.has proven to be reliable and convincing
D.agrees with his research results

The effects of coffee consumption on health have long been a subject of conflict and uncertainty. Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as it’s harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health.
According to a scientific report, mild coffee consumption, three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern, along with other healthful behavior. The report also says that coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it protects against Parkinson’s disease.
According to Dr. Donald Hensrud of Mayo Clinic, high consumption of coffee has health risks. Dr. Hensrud mentions the dangers of high coffee consumption for people with a certain illness that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. Some studies said that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.
According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California, San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of caffeine, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.
Until the scientific community reaches a general agreement on the effects of coffee consumption on human health, it will be up to the individual to decide whether the benefits of drinking coffee are greater than the risks.
When informed of these possible health benefits and harm of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, “Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health. Not to mention I need coffee to stay awake.”
4.What is the people’s attitude towards the effects of coffee on health according to Paragraph 1?
A.Disapproving. B.Tolerant.
C.Doubtful. D.Mixed.
5.What does the underlined word “moderate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Personal. B.Slight.
C.Reasonable. D.Heavy.

C.He often falls asleep in class.
D.He has some health problems.
7.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Why People Love Coffee?
B.How Coffee Affects Health?
C.The Culture of Coffee Drinking
D.The New Findings of Heart Disease

Krubera Cave in the western Caucasus Mountains is the deepest known cave in the world. An international team prepared to descend into Krubera. The team members hoped to be the first cavers to reach a depth of 2,000 meters, brought five tons of equipment and other necessities with them, and established camps at key locations along the route. They worked for up to 20 hours each day.
In the third week, progress was blocked at 1,775 meters by a sump — a cave passage filled with water that gives cavers few options. There are basically three techniques available: dive through it, empty it, or go around it. Gennadiy Samokhin dove to the bottom but was disappointed. “No chance to get through,” he said. Searching for a way around the sump, Garcia Dils risked entering a waterfall of near freezing water and discovered that his dry suit had holes in it. “The water was so cold I lost the feeling in my fingers,” he said later. He, too, was unsuccessful.
Finally, two teammates found a way around the sump through a tight passage they called the Way to the Dream. The team was exhilarated. The passage led to yet another sump at 1,840 meters. After a short test dive, Samokhin emerged, smiling. There was a promising passage, he reported. But it would have to wait. After nearly four weeks, with supplies running low, the team had run out of time and would have to return to the surface.
Four weeks later, a team of nine Ukrainian cavers led by Yuri Kasjan went back to Krubera. Following the path opened by the previous team, they reached the sump at 1,840 meters relatively quickly. After much searching, a pit (坑), later named the Millennium Pit, was discovered that allowed them to pass the 2,000 meter depth. More pits and passages led them to 2,080 meters, a spot they named Game Over. But the caving game is never over. Deeper caves will probably continue to be discovered and call out to be explored.
8.Why did the team return to the surface after nearly four weeks?
A.They were lacking in supplies.
B.They had achieved their goal.
C.They couldn't go through the sump.
D.They gave their task to Yuri Kasjan's team.
9.What does the underlined word “exhilarated” probably mean?
A.Cheerful. B.Powerful.
C.Confused. D.Exhausted.
10.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.Game Over was discovered at 2,000 meters.
B.The Way to the Dream begins at 1,840 meters.
C.The Millennium Pit passed the 2,080 meter depth.
D.Samokhin found a way around a sump at 1,775 meters.
11.What is the text mainly about?
A.The features of Krubera Cave.
B.Famous caves around the world.
C.A journey of exploring Krubera Cave.
D.The importance of exploring Krubera Cave.

Opera is an art form that celebrates the human voice. No other art form creates excitement and moves the heart in the way that opera does, especially when performed by a great singer. Opera is an important part of the Western classical music tradition. It uses music, words, and actions to bring a dramatic story to life. Opera started in Italy at the end of the 16th century and later became popular throughout Europe. Over the years, it has responded to various musicals. In recent decades, much wider audiences have been introduced to opera through modern recording technology. Some singers have become celebrities thanks to performing on radio, on TV, and in the cinema.
However, in recent years, opera has been facing serious challenges. One current challenge to opera is economics. The shortage of money raises the broader question of how much should be paid to support opera singers and other artists. Society seems to accept the large salaries paid to business managers and the multi-million-dollar contracts given to sports athletes. But what about opera singers? Somehow, people have the idea that artists can be creative only if they suffer in poverty, but this is unrealistic. If artists, including opera singers, lack the support they need, valuable talent is wasted.
Not only the shortage of money, but also the way money is managed in the opera world has led to hardships. Principal singers are generally paid performance fees once they complete a show. They typically receive nothing during the many weeks of rehearsal(排练) before a show starts.
Another problem faced by opera is how to meet the demands of audiences who are influenced by popular entertainment. Pop singers are often judged as much on the basis of how they look as how they sound. These demands may be unrealistic and possibly harmful. Opera singers simply cannot make a sound big enough to fill a large theater or concert hall without a microphone if their body weight is too low. Emphasizing physical appearance over singing ability may cause audiences to miss out on the human voice at its best.
There are no easy solutions to opera’s problems and there are many different opinions about the value of opera. However, every year many young people register for music courses with hopes and dreams of developing their talent in this special art form. The fact that opera has survived many obstacles and continues to attract the rising generation shows that it remains a respectable art form full of value.
12.Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Opera singers’ life stories are dramatic.
B.Opera will soon appear on TV and in films.
C.Opera fans thank celebrities for performing.
D.Opera develops by adapting to new conditions.
13.What can we know from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Opera singers are financially insecure.
B.Opera singers waste their valuable talent.
C.Opera singers get paid before the show.
D.Opera singers perform better if they are poor.
14.What does the author try to say in Paragraph 4?
A.Popular culture has had a positive influence on opera.
B.Audiences know best how opera should be performed.
C.Microphones should be used to make opera more enjoyable.
D.Opera singers’ voices should be valued more than their looks.
15.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.The Economic Challenge to Opera
B.Opera Faced with the Difficulties
C.Opera as Part of Popular Culture
D.The Historical Context of Opera
