China’s Cultural Theme Park
Two foreign tourists have arrived with their tour group at the Folk Culture Villages in Shenzhen. This Chinese theme park shows the homes, temples and dress of twenty-one ethnic groups in China. This is a wonderful chance to
see how some of the minority national
groups of China live and what their
customs are.
GUIDE: Which ethnic village do you want to see first There are twenty-four villages here, and they are all life-size, so we have to make some choices.
RICKY: What I really want to do is eat some of the food that Naxi women are making over there. We had to get up very early this morning and I didn’t have any breakfast.
GUIDE: Well, you’d better hurry up, because we want to see at least
half of the villages before noon. We mustn’t miss the Uyghur cultural dances and the Dai singing that starts at 1 o’clock.
LUCY: I hope we have time to see some of the things that the people are making. I’d love to get some of that beautiful Miao cloth for my mother.
GUIDE: The different styles of houses are most interesting. They show the environments that people live in as well as the various cultures.
RICKY: I heard somewhere that the Bai people do beautiful work in wood. Some of these buildings
are amazing – those people over there must live in a wet place. Look how high up and big the houses are.
LUCY: Are those coconut trees real That looks like Hainan! And look down there – that bridge looks like the ones we saw in Suzhou.
GUIDE: The culture park has examples of typical plants and buildings from many places in China. It covers 200,000 square meters.
LUCY: We have lots to see – temples and people in their cultural clothing – and Ricky’ll want to eat again.
RICKY: And Lucy will want to buy more.

2. What is one reason why the Sea World costs so much to visit
It is expensive because the polar bears need ice and cold water, but the Sea World is in a hot climate.
3. Is the Sea World only an amusement park or does it offer educational programs Why do you think so
It is not an amusement park only. It offers educational programmes about methods of rescuing sea animals, birds and fish.
Sea World – A Fishy Experience
David Evens and Ji Yang arrived at
Sea World in Australia.
David: Where do you want to start We need to go to the information center and get a map of the park.
Listening text
Ji Yang: There’re at least three things I want to do. There’s a dolphin show that is one of the best in the world. They do tricks and we can feed them. There is a show where people water ski on bare feet, and I want to take the
airplane trip up the coast and over the water.
David: I don’t think we have enough money to take the airplane. Maybe we could go on the roller coaster instead – it’s not as high up as the airplane, but at least we can pay for it.
Ji Yang: Nah – we can go on a roller coaster in any amusement park. Let’s go see the polar bears. There are two little ones and two big ones that were brought from the Arctic.
David: That’s crazy! Australia’s Gold Coast is too hot for polar bears.
Ji Yang: They have ice and cold water for the polar bears to swim and play in – that’s one reason why it costs so much to visit. Anyway, I think it would be fun to take the dolphin trainers course, and maybe we can do some diving and see some of those colored fish.
David: I would really like to find out what their rescue programme is about. They save fish, sea birds and other endangered species, so it’s not just an amusement park.
Ji Yang: Well, you can get educated – I want to have some fun!
Task 1: Leading in.
Task 2: Listen to get the main idea.
Task 3: Listen again and make some
necessary notes.
Task 4: Listen a third time and check
the answers

How to build a dugout boat
You need a very tall, straight tree. You cut down the tree and remove the branches. Then you cut open the tree so you have two long pieces of wood. You use one piece to make the boat. Remove the inside for a person to sit in.
Take the bark off the outside of the boat and put oil on it so it will easily go through the sea. Some of the boats also have sails.
How to build a house using palm
leaves and branches
Collect many palm leaves. Weave these together to make a large flat area. These will make one side or “wall” of the house. Make four of these. Join one side to another side at right angles by weaving the palm leaves together. Join
the four side in this way. Put sticks up at each corner to hold the walls up. Join two areas of palm leaves together as the roof. Place them on top of the four sides so that water can fall onto the ground. Then you have a palm tree house.
