A
Did
you
know
that
the
color
of
uniforms
can
influence
the
performance
of
an
athlete?
It
may
sound
strange,but
a
study
suggests
this
might
be
true.
Two
British
scientists
studied
the
results
of
four
sports
in
the
2004
Athens
Olympic
Games
where
the
athletes
had
been
given
either
a
red
or
a
blue
uniform.They
discovered
that
when
there
was
a
big
difference
in
the
score,color
had
no
influence
on
the
result.But
if
it
was
a
close
match,the
athlete
in
a
red
uniform
was
more
likely
to
win.Then
they
looked
at
the
uniforms
of
the
soccer
teams
at
the
Euro
2004
tournament.Again,teams
wearing
red
won
more
games.
The
two
scientists
got
their
idea
from
earlier
studies
of
wild
animals.It
had
been
discovered
that
when
a
male
shows
red
on
its
body,it
sends
a
signal
of
its
power
and
strength.For
example,in
many
kinds
of
monkeys,the
more
the
male
shows
off
its
red
scars(伤疤)
the
more
females
it
can
attract.
Based
on
this
fact,the
British
scientists
thought
that
the
idea
might
work
for
humans,too.According
to
them,when
an
athlete
sees
a
competitor
in
a
red
uniform,he
gets
a
feeling
that
his
competitor
could
be
stronger
than
him.And
that
kind
of
feeling
may
have
a
bad
influence
on
the
player’s
performance
in
the
actual
game.
Although
the
idea
is
interesting,most
people
don’t
accept
that
color
signals
in
the
animal
world
can
really
be
useful
to
humans
in
sports.They
think
that
it
is
unreasonable
to
develop
an
idea
based
on
such
a
small
number
of
examples.Much
more
research
has
to
be
done
to
prove
the
influence
of
uniform
colors
on
the
performance
of
athletes.
1.What
did
the
scientists
find
out
about
the
2004
Athens
Olympic
Games?
A.Athletes
played
equally
well
in
four
sports.
B.Game
results
had
a
big
influence
on
the
athletes.
C.Athletes
dressed
in
red
scored
more
in
a
close
match.
D.There
was
a
big
difference
in
red
and
blue
teams’
scores.
2.What
may
the
red
scars
of
a
male
animal
suggest?
A.It
is
a
failure.
B.It
is
quite
strong.
C.It
has
power
over
other
males.
D.It
has
attracted
a
lot
of
females.
3.What
is
most
people’s
attitude
towards
the
scientists’
idea?
A.Interested.
B.Satisfied.
C.Doubtful.
D.Thankful.
B
I
am
not
interested
in
making
the
New
Year’s
decisions.But
this
year,there
came
a
decisive
moment.It
came
when
my
adult
children,who’d
been
home
for
two
weeks,headed
back
to
their
homes.There
was
a
sadness
I
felt
as
I
waved
their
cars
out
of
sight,not
knowing
when
I’d
see
them
again.But
there
was
also
a
knowing
in
that
moment
that
something
in
me
needed
to
change.So
I
asked
myself,“What
is
truly
good
in
your
life?”
What
is
good
is
my
relationships
with
my
children,but
not
only
those
relationships.What
also
keeps
my
heart
beating
is
creating
a
home,no
matter
who
is
there,and
cooking
balanced,plant-based
meals,even
if
just
for
myself.I
find
joy
in
nature
and
connections
with
close
friends
and
family.I
love
doing
photography
and
writing
and
teaching
myself
piano.
Whatever
was
missing
from
my
life,at
the
end
of
last
year
I
knew
about
the
parts
that
worked.As
winter
ended
and
the
visiting
children
prepared
to
leave,I
looked
to
the
future.
I
think
of
my
friend,Lisa,who
in
May
lost
her
husband
of
30
years
to
cancer,and
who
found
herself
on
New
Year’s
Eve
with
no
one
to
be
with.Her
loneliness
was
lasting
in
that
turning-point
moment,but
her
sadness
was
momentary(短暂的).“I
realized
I
had
a
choice,”
she
told
me.Instead
of
giving
way
to
loneliness
and
despair,she
chose
to
find
something
productive
to
do.
We
humans
can
become
bored
with
defeat.We
know
something
is
just
the
other
side.Like
a
new
year,I
have
two
choices.I
can
brand
myself
as
the
long-suffering
mother
who
never
figured
out
how
to
live
on
after
her
children
left.Or
I
can
take
to
the
piano
in
the
center
of
the
house
each
day
and
practice
Ode
to
Joy
with
one
hand
until
such
time
as
I
feel
ready
to
play
with
two.
4.What
can
we
know
about
the
author
from
the
first
paragraph?
A.She
didn’t
want
to
live
a
lonely
life
any
more.
B.She
was
curious
about
her
life
in
the
New
Year.
C.She
had
a
difficult
relationship
with
her
children.
D.She
didn’t
think
her
life
kept
any
promise
any
more.
5.How
will
the
author
probably
change
her
life?
A.By
improving
her
physical
health.
B.By
taking
more
music
classes
when
free.
C.By
spending
more
time
with
her
children.
D.By
focusing
on
things
that
bring
her
happiness.
6.Why
does
the
author
mention
her
friend
Lisa?
A.To
show
there
are
people
with
worse
lives
than
herself.
B.To
point
out
there
are
choices
even
when
life
is
difficult.
C.To
prove
being
on
one’s
own
has
a
big
influence
on
others.
D.To
stress
the
importance
of
family
members
on
New
Year’s
Eve.

Big-name
schools
are
usually
favoured
to
advance

the
tournament.But
each
year
there
are
dark

from
little-known
universities.
This
adds
to
the
madness.Watching

a
school
with
3,000
students
beat
a
team
from
a
school
with
30,000,for
many
