A four-year-old girl is lying in the arms of a doctor. She has just become motherless. A bomb destroyed her home and killed her mother.
Every day, we see pictures like this on TV or in newspapers. We see young Iraqi children begging for food and water from American and British soldiers. They move through towns and cities towards the capital, Baghdad. We see these children following grown-ups, carrying bags of things almost the same size as their small bodies as they run away from their homes.
“ Dad, why are the Americans attacking us? Are we going to be killed?” asks the son of Abu Sinar, an Iraqi engineer. Abu finds it hard to explain this war to his eight-year- old son.
He tries to comfort him by saying, “The bombs are far away from us. The Americans are fighting the soldiers. We are going to be all right.” Abu knows this isn’t always the truth, but what else can he do? In Baghdad, parents give their children sleeping pills to make them sleep so that they won’t hear the sound of bombing. And all the schools are closed.
“ All we can do is to listen to and hear the war,”said Abu. “People in Baghdad, men and women, young and old, have to live in fear. We don’t know where the next bombs are going. We can do nothing but wait to be killed.”

When I was 13 years old, a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile.
It was the early autumn of my first year at a junior high school, and my old school was far away. As a result, 1 knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my 2 break. I couldn't talk to anyone about my problems. And I didn't want my parents to worry about me.
Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, 3 I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didn't know who he was. He passed me and then 4 back. He looked at me and, without a word, smiled.
Suddenly, I felt the touch of 5 bright and friendly. It made me feel happy and warm.
That smile changed my life. I 6 to talk with the other students and made friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now.
One day I asked him why he smiled, but he couldn't remember smiling at me!
It doesn't matter because all the dark days have gone. Now I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think you are lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back.

Just how well do you read? You may find this question difficult to answer. If a friend asks how tall you are,you may hand him a r 1 and tell him to measure you. But you can’t measure your reading ability with a ruler.
Here is one way to j 2 your reading ability. Take from your desk the book you are using this year--the textbooks needed for English, math and science. Read a few paragraphs from each textbook. Then ask y 3 these questions.Do I read these books easily? Is it difficult for me to get the information from these books? Am I struggling(挣扎)through each book—looking at each word again and again, but still not able to understand w 4 the words mean? Most people like you need to make their reading b 5 . The fifth grade pupil knows that the textbooks for the sixth grade will be more difficult than those he is using now. The middle school student knows that he must prepare to read books written for high school boys and girls.
The high school student knows that he must prepare to read c 6 texts. And so it goes. Most people say, “I want to help myself.”
There is always one good rule that you should follow. You should keep your mind on all you are doing. A car may run through a stop light because the c 7 driver is thinking of something other than his driving. The same is true with reading. If you think of nothing else while you are reading, you will become a better reader.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)
The furniture may often be very old, and it may have changed hands many times. It may also be very valuable(值钱的) although the most valuable pieces will usually go to the London salesrooms, where one piece might be sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The books, too, may be old and very valuable; some may be rare first printings. Often when someone dies or has to move to a new place, his books may all be sold,so sometimes you may find that some people who work in libraries come to this kind of shop. On the border(边界)between England and Wales, there is a town which was once only a sheep market, but which has now become a huge bookshop as well. And now books have replaced sheep as the town7 s main business.
The British treasure the past and the things of the past. This is true of household goods as well. These days no one knocks them down. They are repaired until they are often better than the new ones.
In Britain, people do not buy something just because it is new. Old things are treasured for their proven(已证明的)worth; new things have to prove themselves before they are accepted.
1. What is a secondhand shop in Britain?
2. What things are often sold in British secondhand shops?
3. How much might one valuable piece be sold in the London salesrooms?
4. When someone dies or has to move to a new place in Britain, his books are often all sold, aren’t they?
5. Where is the town which was once a sheep market but now a huge bookshop?
Why do the British love the old things?
