B
  Genetically
modified(转基因的)foods
have
become
a
focus
point
of
agriculture
throughout
the
news
today.
This
has
an
effect
on
many
different
aspects
of
the
agriculture
world.
From
the
seed
dealer,
to
the
farmer
that
buys
the
seed,
to
the
workers
that
the
farmer
sells
to:
all
are
affected
by
the
new
technologies
that
are
involved
in
this
part
of
production
agriculture.
  Genetically
modified
foods
have
come
under
heavy
fire
lately.
There
are
some
countries
that
are
against
buying
these
types
of
foods.
They
are
being
tested
for
safety
by
the
best
scientific
experts
in
Europe,
the
US
and
the
rest
of
the
world.
They
are
not
for
sale
until
they
have
gone
through
this
complete
safety
process.
Since
they
are
a
new
product,
and
any
slight
problem
with
them
could
affect
a
whole
country,
these
tests
are
very
necessary.
  These
safety
tests
are
carried
out
because
of
the
new
rules
that
were
made
with
the
Novel
Foods
Regulation.
Begun
in
May
of
1997,
the
Novel
Foods
Regulation
set
up
an
EU-wide
pre-market
system
for
all
novel
foods.
A
novel
food
is
described
as
one
that
has
not
been
eaten
by
EU
consumers
widely.
By
setting
up
this
program
the
EU
hopes
to
keep
its
consumers
safe
from
any
possible
side
effects
of
any
new
food
products.
  There
are
a
variety
of
ways
in
which
genetic
modification
has
helped
food
producers.
They
can
improve
the
nutritional
value
or
the
storage
conditions
of
the
food.
Today
there
are
only
two
genetically
modified
foods
that
have
been
allowed
for
use,
these
are
GM
soybean
and
GM
maize.
  Despite
any
safety
checks,
many
people
are
still
cautious
about
eating
genetically
modified
foods.
By
providing
these
people
with
the
necessary
information,
we
can
allow
them
to
make
decisions
about
these
foods.

encourage
people
to
eat

One
day
a
farmer's
donkey
fell
down
into
a
well.
The
animal
cried
1
for
hours
as
the
farmer
tried
to
figure
out
what
to
do.
Finally
he
decided
to
give
up
because
the
animal
was
2,
and
the
well
needed
to
be
covered
up
anyway;
it
just
wasn't
worth
it
to
save
the
donkey.
So
he
decided
to
3
the
donkey.
He
invited
all
his
neighbors
to
4
and
help
him.
They
all
grabbed
a
shovel(铲)and
began
to
shovel
5
into
the
well.
At
first,
the
donkey
realized
what
was
happening
and
cried
horribly.
Then,
to
everyone's
6,
he
quieted
down.
A
few
shovel
7
later,
the
farmer
finally
looked
down
the
well.
He
was
astonished
at
what
he
saw:With
each
shovel
of
dirt
that
hit
his
8
,
the
donkey
was
doing
something
amazing.
He
would
shake
it
off
and
take
a
step
up.
As
the
farmer's
neighbors
continued
to
shovel
dirt
on
top
of
the
animal,
he
would
shake
it
off
and
take
a
step
up.
Pretty
soon,
everyone
was
amazed
as
the
donkey
stepped
up
over
the
9
of
the
well
and
happily
got
out!
The
donkey
later
came
back
and
10
the
shovel
out
of
the
farmer
who
had
tried
to
cover
him.
The
wound
from
the
bite
got
11
,
and
the
farmer
finally
died
in
agony
from
septic
shock.
Life
is
going
to
shovel
dirt
on
you,
all
kinds
of
dirt.
The
12
to
getting
out
of
the
well
is
to
shake
off
dirt
and
take
a
step
up.
Each
of
our
troubles
is
13
.
We
can
get
out
of
the
deepest
wells
by
not
stopping,
never
giving
up,
shaking
it
off,
and
taking
a
step
up!
Remember
the

simple
rules
to

I
remember
the
day
Dad
first
brought
the
heavy
accordion(手风琴)home.
He
gathered
my
mother
and
me
in
the
living
room
and
opened
the
case
as
if
it
were
a
treasure
box.
"Here
it
is,
"he
said.
“Once
you
learn
to
play,
it'll
stay
with
you
for
life.
"If
my
thin
smile
didn't
match
his
great
pleasure,
it
was
because
I
had
prayed
for
a
guitar.
For
the
next
two
weeks,
the
accordion
was
stored
in
the
hall
closet.
Then
one
evening,
Dad
announced
that
I
would
start
lessons
the
following
week.
Shortly
afterqqmy
lessons
began
with
Mr.
Zelli
at
the
Allegro
Accordion
School.
On
my
first
day,
with
straps(手风琴皮带)straining
my
shoulder,
I
felt
clumsy
in
every
way.
"How
did
he
do?"
my
father
asked
when
it
was
over.
“Fine
for
the
first
lesson.
”said
Mr.
Zelli.
Dad
glowed
with
hope.
I
was
ordered
to
practice
half
an
hour
every
day,
and
every
day
I
tried
to
get
out
of
it.
My
future
seemed
to
be
outside
playing
ball,
not
in
the
house
mastering
songs
I
would
soon
forget,
but
my
parents
urged
me
to
practice.
Gradually,
to
my
surprise,
I
was
able
to
string
notes
together
and
coordinate
my
hands
to
play
simple
songs.
Often,
after
supper,
my
father
would
request
a
tune
or
two.
As
he
sat
in
his
easy
chair,
I
would
play
through
Lady
of
Spain
and
Beer
Barrel
Polka.
“Very
nice,
better
than
last
week,
"he'd
say.
With
the
fall
recital(演奏会)approaching,
I
would
have
to
play
a
solo
on
a
local
movie
theater's
stage.
I
wanted
to
skip
the
whole
thing.
Emotions
boiled
over
in
the
car
one
Sunday
afternoon.
“I
don't
want
to
play
a
solo,
”I
said.
“You
have
to,
”replied
my
father.
“Why?"I
shouted.
“Because
you
didn't
get
to
play
your
violin
when
you
were
a
kid?
Why
should
I
have
to
play
this
stupid
instrument
when
you
never
had
to
play
yours?”Dad
pulled
the
car
over
and
pointed
at
me.
“Because
you
can
bring
people
joy.
You
can
touch
their
hearts.
That's
a
gift
I
won't
let
you
throw
away.
”He
added
softly,
“Someday
you'll
have
the
chance
I
never
had:
you'll
play
beautiful
music
for
your
family.
And
you
will
understand
why
you've
worked
so
hard.

I
was
speechless.
I
had
rarely
heard
Dad
speak
with
such
feeling
about
anything,
much
less
the
accordion.
From
then
on,
I
practiced
without
parents'
making
me.

mum
saved
her
daughter’s
life
with
her
newly
learned
first
aid
skills.
Sonya
Hall,
33,
of
Denny
Avenue,
Lancaster,
had
only
just
attended
one
first
aid
class
the
day
before
when
she
found
herself
needing
to
use
the
skills
on
her
three-year-old
daughter,
Tilly.
Sonya,
who
also
has
a
son
Emmen,
six,
attended
the
first
aid
course
at
Lune
Park
Children’s
Centre
in
Lancaster.
Then
she
was
faced
with
every
parent’s
worst
nightmare
when
Tilly
went
blue
in
the
face
and
stopped
breathing.
But
thanks
to
her
newly
acquired
skills,
Sonya
saved
Tilly’s
life.
Sonya
said,
“Tilly
was
playing
with
her
brother
and
they
were
fighting
over
a
toy.
Emmen
won
the
fight.
Tilly
fell
backwards
and
her
head
was
hit.
She
was
face
down
and
shaking
and
at
first
I
thought
she
was
upset.
But
then
I
saw
she
was
blue
in
the
face
and
had
stopped
breathing.
I
reacted
without
thinking
and
immediately
started
using
the
first
aid
skills
I
had
learned
the
day
before
which
were
so
fresh
in
my
mind.
I
began
doing
mouth-to-mouth
and
chest
compressions(胸外按压).
It
probably
took
about
a
minute
before
Tilly
started
breathing
again,
but
to
me
it
felt
like
a
lifetime.

After
getting
Tilly
breathing
again,
Sonya
called
an
ambulance
and
the
doctors
came.
Since
then,
Tilly
has
been
diagnosed
with
Reflex
Anoxic
Seizure(反射缺氧发作).
Sonya
said,
“The
seizure
can
happen
when
there’s
any
unexpected
pain,
fear
or
fright.
It
is
just
so
lucky
that
the

it
happened,
I
had
been
practising
first
aid.

The

course
is

Sonya
said,
“I
am
just
so

I
did
the
course
and
learnt
first
aid
skills.
I
always
feared
I
would
not
know
what
to
do
in
a
crisis
situation,
but
luckily
I
had
the
knowledge
and
skills
to
deal
with
it.

Recordings

angry

big,tough
African
elephants
running
away,a
new
study
says.Beehives(蜂窝)—either
recorded
or
real—may
even
prevent
elephants
from
damaging
farmers'
crops.
In
2002,scientist
Lucy
King
and
her
team
found
that
elephants
avoid
certain
trees
with
bees
living
in
them.Today,Lucy
wants
to
see
if
African
honeybees
might
discourage
elephants
from
eating
crops.But
before
she
asked
farmers
to
go
to
the
trouble
of
setting
up
beehives
on
their
farms,she
needed
to
find
out
if
the
bees
would
scare
elephants
away.
Lucy
found
a
wild
beehive
inside
a
tree
in
northern
Kenya
and
set
up
a
recorder.Then
she
threw
a
stone
into
the
beehive,which
burst
into
life.Lucy
and
her
assistant
hid
in
their
car
until
the
angry
bees
had
calmed
down.Next,Lucy
searched
out
elephant
families
in
Samburu
National
Reserve
in
northern
Kenya
and
put
a
speaker
in
a
tree
close
to
each
family.
From
a
distance,Lucy
switched
on
the
pre?recorded
sound
of
angry
bees
while
at
the
same
time
recording
the
elephants
with
a

the

area
within
ten
seconds.Out
of
a
total
of
17
groups,only
one
group
ignored
the
sound
of
the
angry
bees.Lucy
reported
that
all
the
young
elephants
immediately
ran
to
their
mothers
to
hide
under
them.When
Lucy
played
the
sound
of
a
waterfall(瀑布)
instead
of
the
angry
bees
to
many
of
the
same
elephant
families,the
animals
were
undisturbed.Even
after
four
minutes,most
of
the
groups
stayed
in
one
place.
Lucy
is
now
studying
whether
the
elephants
will
continue
to
avoid
the
sound
of
angry
bees
after
hearing
it
several
times.She
hasn't

As
an
adult,
I
realized
that
I
had
no
skills,
so
I
went
to
trade
school.
I
entered
a
cabinetmaking
(家具制造)
program.
I
didn’t
think
I
would
be
good
at
building
furniture.
I’m
not
handy.
Nobody
in
my
family
is.
I
had
great
teachers,
but
making
furniture
is
hard.
There
are
so
many
steps
and
something
can
go
wrong
at
each
one.
I
couldn’t
even
get
organized.
My
toolbox
always
looked
like
a
hurricane
had
gone
through
it.
I
didn’t
fully
know
what
I
was
devoting
myself
to
at
the
beginning,
but
I
kept
going
to
class.
I
tried
to
wrap
my
brain
around
the
math.
The
projects
forced
me
to
solve
new
kinds
of
problems.
My
brain
started
to
build
new
connections.
Working
in
this
new
physical
manner
and
giving
it
100
percent
of
my
effort
had
huge
benefits
for
my
mental
health.
I
got
over
fear
of
embarrassment
and
asked
for
help
at
every
opportunity.
I
spent
that
year
truly
learning.
True
learning
is
a
humbling
(令人谦卑的)
experience,
especially
for
those
of
us
who
are
learning
a
new
set
of
skills.
I
could
understand
exactly
what
was
wrong
with
the
furniture
I
made,
but
I
couldn’t
fix
my
mistakes.
And
yet,
I
kept
trying.
And
failing.
And
failing
again.
Until
I
learned
to
fail
better.
You’re
going
to
be
bad
at
anything
when
you
start
out,
but
I
was
pretty
bad
right
to
the
end.
Even
so,
I
finished
the
program

with
honors,
no
less!
My
grades
were
helped
by
my
good
written
work.
Having
to
constantly
push
beyond
my
comfort
zone
has
made
me
a
more
well-rounded
person.
Maybe
most
importantly,
trade
school
gave
me
a
more
realistic
idea
of
my
strengths
and
limitations.
I’m
stronger
than
I
thought!

The
first
“mobile
phone
sidewalk
in
China”
has
appeared
at
a
scenic
spot
in
Chongqing.
The
sidewalk—3
meters
wide
and
50
meters
long—was
built
in
the
Yangrenjie
Scenic
Spot.
It
separates
pedestrians
along
two
pathways.
One
is
for
cell
phone
users
to
walk
on;
the
other
is
for
those
without
cell
phones.
A
warning
sign
shows:
Cell
phones
walk
in
this
lane
at
your
own
risk.
“In
my
mind,
these
sidewalks
help
a
lot
in
minimizing
security
risks
for
mobile
phone
addicts,”
said
Wang
Li,
a
local
resident
who
doesn’t
use
a
mobile
phone
often.
Cases
of
mobile
phone
users
being
injured
while
using
their
phones
and
ignoring
their
surroundings
have
been
reported
by
the
media.
Tourists
who
were
attracted
to
the
sidewalk
took
photos
of
it.
But
many
did
not
comply
with
the
regulation,
and
someone
even
parked
a
car
on
the
sidewalk.
Li
Zhijiang,
a
20-year-old
college
student
from
Guizhou,
regarded
the
sidewalk
as
great
progress.
“I
knew
there
were
such
sidewalks
in
Washington’s
central
business
district,
which
are
very
necessary
for
the
addicts,
especially
in
the
busy
streets,”
Li
said.
Anthony
Edwards,
a
28-year-old
actor
from
England,
was
enthusiastic,
saying
it
was
an
improvement
over
his
home
country.
However,
his
Chinese
colleague,
Xing
Xing,
thought
the
sidewalk
was
“pointless”,
but
added
a
grudging
(勉强的)
acknowledgement:
“Setting
up
special
sidewalks
could
be
a
solution
to
reducing
security
problems
in
particular
situations.
But
this
kind
of
sidewalk
is
not
a
fundamental
solution
and
could
be
an
indulgence
(嗜好)
for
mobile
phone
addicts
in
the
long
run
in
my
mind
and
this
could
even
lead
to
more
problems
in
the
future.”
With
the
increasing
popularity
of
smartphones,
more
young
people
in
China
are
glued
to
them,
a
phenomenon
that
worries
many
experts.
It
is
estimated
that
the
number
of
smartphone
users
in
China
will
be
more
than
500
million
this
year.
8.What
is
the
initial
purpose
of
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk?
A.To
avoid
being
crowded.
B.To
reduce
the
security
risks.
C.To
regulate
the
people’s
behavior.
D.To
make
it
convenient
to
walk
in
the
street.
9.What
can
be
used
to
replace
the
underlined
phrase
“comply
with”
in
paragraph
?
A.Ignore.
B.Consider.
C.Explain.
D.Observe.
10.What
is
the
third
paragraph
mainly
talking
about?
A.The
mixed
reactions
to
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
B.The
necessity
of
building
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
C.The
problems
of
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk
in
the
future.
D.The
safety
measures
to
protect
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
11.What
do
many
experts
worry
about?
A.The
increasing
popularity
of
smartphones.
B.Cars
being
parked
on
the
mobile
phone
sidewalk.
C.More
young
people
being
addicted
to
cell
phones.
D.The
mobile
phone
sidewalk
being
ruined
in
the
future.
D
Hardware
in
general,
and
smartphones
in
particular,
have
become
a
huge
environmental
and
health
problem
in
the
Global
South's
landfill
sites(垃圾填埋场).
Electronic
waste(e-waste)currently
takes
up
5
percent
of
all
global
waste,
and
it
is
set
to
increase
rapidly
as
more
of
us
own
more
than
one
smartphone,
laptop
and
power
bank.
They
end
up
in
places
like
Agbogbloshie
on
the
outskirts
of
Ghana's
capital,
Accra.
It
is
the
biggest
e-waste
dump
in
the
world,
where
10,
000
informal
workers
walk
through
tons
of
abandoned
goods
as
part
of
an
informal
recycling
process.
They
risk
their
health
searching
for
the
precious
metals
that
are
found
in
abandoned
smartphones.
But
Agbogbloshie
should
not
exist.
The
Basel
Convention,
a
1989
treaty,
aims
to
prevent
developed
nations
from
unauthorized
dumping
of
e-waste
in
less
developed
countries.
The
e-waste
industry,
however,
circumvents
the
regulations
by
exporting
e-waste
labelled
as"secondhand
goods"to
poor
countries
like
Ghana,
knowing
full
well
that
it
is
heading
for
a
landfill
site.
A
recent
report
found
Agbogbloshie
contained
some
of
the
most
dangerous
chemicals.
This
is
not
surprising:
smartphones
contain
chemicals
like
mercury
(水银),
lead
and
even
arsenic(砷).
Reportedly,
one
egg
from
a
free-range
chicken
in
Agbogbloshie
contained
a
certain
chemical
which
can
cause
cancer
and
damage
the
immune
system
at
a
level
that's
about
220
times
greater
than
a
limit
set
by
the
European
Food
Safety
Authority(EFSA).
Most
worryingly,
these
poisonous
chemicals
are
free
to
pollute
the
broader
soil
and
water
system.
This
should
concern
us
all,
since
some
of
Ghana's
top
exports
are
cocoa
and
nuts.
Some
governments
have
started
to
take
responsibility
for
their
consumers'
waste.
For
example,
Germany
has
started
a
project
that
includes
a
sustainable(可持续的)recycling
system
at
Agbogbloshie,
along
with
a
health
clinic
for
workers.
However,
governments
cannot
solve
the
problem
alone,
as
there
is
an
almost
limitless
consumer
demand
for
hardware,
especially
when
governments
green
policies
are
focused
on
issues
like
climate
change.
Only
the
manufacturers
can
fix
this.
A
more
economically
sustainable
and
politically
possible
solution
is
through
encouraging
hardware
manufacturers
to
make
the
repair,
reuse
and
recycling
of
hardware
profitable,
or
at
least
cost-neutral.
12.What
can
we
infer
from
Paragraph
2?
A.
Electronic
products
need
improving
urgently.
B.
Electronic
waste
is
too
complex
to
get
fully
recycled.
C.
Electronic
waste
requires
more
landfill
sites
across
Ghana.
D.
Electronic
pollution
is
a
burning
question
in
Agbogbloshie.
13.What
does
the
underlined
word
"circumvents"
in
Paragraph
1
mean?
A.
Tightens.
B.
Abolishes.
C.
Gets
around.
D.
Brings
in.
14.What
should
be
the
biggest
concern
according
to
the
text?
A.
The
violation
of
EFSA's
standards.
B.
The
lack
of
diversity
in
Ghana's
exports.
C.
The
damage
to
chicken's
immune
system.
D.
The
threat
of
polluted
food
around
the
world.
15.What
does
the
author
think
is
the
best
solution
to
the
e-waste
problem?
A.
Manufacturers'
developing
a
sustainable
hardware
economy.
B.
Governments'
adjusting
their
green
policies
about
e-waste.
C.
Reducing
customers
'demands
for
electronic
products.
D.
Letting
governments
take
on
the
main
responsibility.

Success
is
so
much
more
than
just
money
or
fame.
16.
This
allows
you
to
be
true
to
who
you
really
are.
If
you
want
to
create
a
life
that
makes
you
feel
passionate
to
be
alive,
what
do
you
need
to
focus
on?
17.
If
you
don’t
believe
in
yourself,
how
do
you
expect
other
people
to?
If
you
don’t
believe
that
you
can
have
the
life
you
desire,
it
is
going
to
be
very
difficult
to
create
a
successful
life.
When
you
believe
in
yourself,
it
fuels
your
creativity,
your
ambitions
and
your
motivation
to
do
things.
Another
way
is
to
know
your
intention.
If
your
intention
is
simply
rooted
in
money
and
fame,
chances
are
that
you
are
never
going
to
truly
feel
successful.
18.
And
it
is
not
enough
to
maintain
a
long-term
feeling
of
fulfillment
and
happiness.
For
a
truly
successful
life,
your
intention
has
to
be
rooted
in
your
purpose,
in
your
passions
and
in
what
feels
good
to
you.
When
your
intention
is
to
serve
your
purpose
and
express
your
talents,
you
will
feel
true
success
and
satisfaction.
Realize
you
are
already
successful.
19.
The
more
you
can
welcome
that
into
your
life,
the
more
you
will
start
to
feel
it.
Being
grateful
for
the
tiniest
successes
in
life
will
also
help
you
to
create
more
and
more
success.
This
is
a
powerful
mindset
shift.
It
will
