Greg could always be counted on to have an interesting party every year. This year the party was at Greg's house. The fun part was a scavenger hunt(寻物游戏)he had set up for us. Two days before the party, Greg went around and asked the neighbors if they would help out. They were almost all willing.
At the party he divided us into groups of four. We all had the same list of things to collect and an hour's time to do it. The group that found the most things on the list would be the winners. So as soon as the hunt began, my group set out at once, in the hope of winning the game. Our first stop was house number 38.A Mrs. Trollis answered the bell quickly. She was glad to help. She had three of the items needed: a nail, a photograph of a baby, and a shoe box.
牋 The next stop was Mr. Gray's house. He was an older man who invited us in. He told us all about a scavenger hunt he went on when he was a boy. We were interested but also worried that we would run out of time listening to his stories. When he realized we didn't have all night, Mr. Gray hurried off to find us a few things we needed. "I hope you will be the winners," he said.
牋 Then we rushed off to another house. A young lady, Ms. Crane, came to the door. She looked busy but she said she could help out. We asked for a baking soda box. Ms. Crane emptied some baking soda into a bottle and handed us the box. We got a few more items in other houses and by this time we were missing only a Chinese newspaper.

There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation(从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.
Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who抎 passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I抎 used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she抎 enjoyed when she was her daughter抯 age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
揟asha, would you like to know where we are going? Mom asked calmly.
牋 I guess厰 I murmured under my breath.
牋 揝weetheart, we are going to a children抯 shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you, she explained.
牋 I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn抰 going to be so bad.
牋 Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds.
??? The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars (伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.

A. J. shut the door of the truck. “Ready,” he said. His dad started the truck. It was six o’clock and freezing, but the strong morning sun promised warmer temperatures. It had been colder than normal over the past week, and the ground and ponds were already frozen.
“After we check on the cows,” Dad said, “you should have some time to practice roping cattle.” A. J. wanted to enter the rodeos (牛仔竞技表演) in which cowboys rode wild horses, and caught cattle with ropes.
The best professionals could break from the gate on horseback, rope a calf(小牛), and hog-tie the calf in less than ten seconds. So far, A.J. needed nearly a minute and a half, but he’d only been at it for a few months.
The truck bounced down the dirt road. In a few minutes, they passed through the field gate.
A. J. pulled a pair of telescopes. The black spots of cows on the far hill took shape. The cows gathered around the pond. A. J. guessed they wanted the water locked under the ice. Suddenly, they heard extremely frightened shouts from one cow. Dad stopped the truck, and he and A. J. stared at the frozen pond anxiously.
A calf lay on the ice in the middle of the pond. A cow, no doubt the calf抯 mother, stood onshore, shouting desperately. The calf struggled to get up but slipped and fell each time.
The morning sun seemed warmer. Too warm. A. J. knew that the situation was urgent. If the calf lay there too long, she could fall through the ice and drown. Dad eased the truck down the hill and stopped at the edge of the pond. 揘o telling how long she抯 been there, he said. 揟he ice could be about to melt. I don抰 think we can risk it. Dad shook his head, 揑t抯 just not safe.

When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she read stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白、解说员)part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful —— even dandelions.
My mother looked at me seriously. 揧es, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isnt it? She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. 揂nd that is true of people too, she added. 揘ot everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that. Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

It was 8 a.m. Kathy, a 25-year-old nurse, had just finished a 12-hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert(预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe.? “I figured I’d be in bed in an hour,” she says.
Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy抯 car. She couldn抰 see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, 揳 total whiteout and rows of cars and trucks.
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. No, maam, he answered. 揧ou抮e not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they’d seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody’s coming and I can’t take you.”
Near 10 p.m. Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder(紧急停车带) and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch(浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough(水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

" I suggested, "Maybe we can find a Chinese there who carries a Chinese newspaper." Realizing it might be our only chance, we immediately rushed to a street nearby, where we did find a Chinese woman. It was so lucky that she happened to have a Chinese newspaper in her bag.Smiling, she handed us the newspaper after we explained the situation to her.
Finally, we got everything on the list.We wasted no time in getting back to Greg's with the things we collected. It turned out that our group was the only one to get a Chinese newspaper. After all our things were checked, to our great joy, we were declared the winners.Of course, the other groups all wondered how we had managed to get such a newspaper."It's very simple," I laughed."Since it's a Chinese newspaper, you should ask a Chinese for it."

As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked over to her daughter. “Mind some advice?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “of course not.” I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. “Cherish her and cherish every single moment you can stay with her, I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, 揥hen she抯 gone, it抯 these little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I know. Having finished saying this, I noticed the elderly woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
Together they made their way toward the store抯 exit. Then the daughter glanced over her elderly mother. And slowly, almost unwillingly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mothers’ shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd. Tears filled my eyes when I watched them disappearing in the crowd.

答案:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator, she said, reminding me how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. 揟he narrator's part is just as important as the part of a princess. Her wise words inspired me with courage and confidence. But on the evening of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again. My teacher came over to me. 揧our mother asked me to give you this, she said, handing me a dandelion. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down.
After the play, I took home the flower. My mother made it into a dried flower and put it into a glass bottle. Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience. I have taken part in many school plays, tried different roles and made many speeches ever since. Gradually, I抳e become really good at performing and public speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. For this, I am forever grateful to my mother, who have made me what I am today.
3.词汇激活行为类①激励:inspire/encourage/give sb. courage②使镇静:calm sb. down/make sb. calm down/get rid of the panic③提醒:remind sb. of sth./give sb. the thought of/bring sb. back to the memory of情绪类①勇气和自信:with courage and confidence /be confident/be encouraged②紧张:be nervous/ be in panic
【点睛】[高分句型1]. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down.
该复合句中,looking at it是现在分词短语作状语,which引导非限制性定语从句。[高分句型2]. Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience.
Every time引导时间状语从句。
