VI.阅读理解
A
In
the
western
Los
Angeles
sits
the
famous
city
of
Hollywood,
known
as
the
global
center
of
movie
studios
and
film
stars.
The
Selig
Film
Manufacturing
Company
was
the
first
major
film
company
to
come
to
Hollywood,
shooting
its
first
film
entitled
The
Heart
of
A
Race
Tout
in
1908.
The
next
year
the
film
company
built
the
first
permanent
film
studio.
Although
electric
lights
existed
at
that
time,
none
were
powerful
enough
to
adequately
expose
film.
The
best
source
of
illumination
for
movie
production
was
nature
sunlight.
Besides
the
sunny
weather,
film
producers
were
also
drawn
to
Hollywood
because
of
its
open
spaces
and
wide
variety
of
natural
scenery.
Another
reason
was
the
distance
of
Southern
California
from
New
Jersey,
which
made
it
more
difficult
for
Thomas
Edison
to
enforce
his
film
patents.
At
that
time,
Edison
owned
almost
all
the
patents
relevant
to
film
production.
As
a
result,
in
the
East,
movie
producers
acting
independently
out
of
Edison's
Motion
Picture
Patents
Company
were
often
accused
by
Edison.
But
in
Los
Angeles,
things
were
different.
If
he
sent
his
men
to
California,
word
would
usually
reach
Los
Angeles
before
they
did
and
the
movie
makers
could
escape
to
nearby
Mexico.
In
1911,
a
second
movie
studio-Nestor
Studios,
was
founded.
At
about
the
same
time,
many
film
production
companies
from
New
York
and
New
Jersey
started
moving
to
sunny
California
because
of
the
good
weather.
The
first
Academy
Awards
presentation
ceremony
took
place
in
1929
in
the
Hollywood
Roosevelt
Hotel.
Tickets
were
$10
and
there
were
250
people
attending
the
ceremony.
From
about
1930,
five
major
“Hollywood”
movie
studios
in
Hollywood,
Paramount,
RKO,
20th
Century
Fox,
Metro?Goldwyn?Mayer
and
Warner
Bros,
owned
almost
all
large
theatres
throughout
the
country
for
the
exhibition
of
their
movies.
The
period
between
the
years
1927
to
1984
was
considered
the
“Golden
Age
of
Hollywood”.
1.The
word
“illumination”
in
the
third
paragraph
can
be
replaced
by
________.
A.
light
B.
story
C.
patent
D.
film
2.According
to
the
text,
film
producers
were
drawn
to
Hollywood
for
the
following
reasons
EXCEPT
________.
A.
open
spaces
B.
various
scenery
C.
unique
culture
D.
sunny
weather
3.What
can
we
infer
from
paragraph
4?
A.Thomas
Edison
moved
his
office
to
Hollywood
to
enforce
his
film
patents.
B.
Movie
producers
working
on
the
West
Coast
were
never
accused
by
Edison.
C.
Edison's
Motion
Picture
Patents
Company
owned
many
studios
in
Hollywood.
D.
Movie
makers
in
Los
Angeles
could
work
independently
out
of
Edison's
control.
4.What
do
we
know
about
the
first
Academy
Awards
presentation
ceremony?
A.
It
was
held
in
a
restaurant.
B.
There
were
250
people
receiving
the
awards.
C.
There
were
250
people
present
at
the
ceremony.
D.
It
was
held
by
five
major
“Hollywood”
movie
studios.
B
Musicians
are
said
to
have
better
language
skills
and
scientific
studies
have
backed
that
up.
But
it's
not
clear
why
that
might
be
the
case.
Now,
a
study
of
74
Chinese
kindergarteners
suggests
six
months
of
piano
lessons
can
heighten
the
brain's
response
to
changes
in
pitch
(声调).
And
kids
who
got
piano
lessons
were
also
better
at
telling
apart
two
similar?sounding
Mandarin
(普通话)
words,
which
contained
different
consonants
(辅音),
than
students
who
got
extra
reading
training
or
who
went
through
regular
kindergarten.
Mandarin
is
a
tonal
language-the
famous
example
is
the
word
“ma”which
can
mean
mother
or
horse
depending
on
its
pitch.
So
might
musical
training
translate
better
to
Mandarin
than
it
would
to
English?
Yeah,
it's
possible
that
this
influenced
the
results,
said
Robert
Desimone,
a
neuroscientist
(神经科学家)
at
the
McGovern
Institute
at
MIT.
But
he
says
other
studies
do
back
up
the
fact
that
music
lessons
benefit
language
learners,
even
in
countries
without
tonal
languages.
“And
what
our
study
added
on
top
of
that
was
some
idea
of
the
neural
basis
for
those
benefits.”
And
if
you
don't
own
a
piano,
don't
despair.
The
reading
group
actually
did
just
as
well
on
many
measures
as
the
piano
group.
“Reading's
pretty
good
actually.
We
don't
mean
to
disvalue
reading
instruction.”
More
important,
he
says,
was
to
show
piano
wasn't
actually
worse
than
reading
for
these
skills
...
thus
perhaps
encouraging
cash?strapped
(资金短缺的)
schools
to
bring
their
music
programs
alive.
5.What
can
we
infer
from
the
passage?
A.
It's
obvious
why
musicians
have
better
language
skills.
B.
Musicians
tend
to
be
better
language
learners.
C.
Reading
works
better
than
a
piano
for
language
skills.
D.
Music
lessons
are
greatly
valued
in
money?tight
schools.
6.What
does
the
underlined
part
in
paragraph
3
mean?
A.
Musical
training
makes
Mandarin
easier
than
English
to
understand.
B.
Musicians
translate
Mandarin
better
than
English.
C.
Musical
training
contributes
better
to
learning
a
tonal
language
than
a
non?tonal
one.
D.
Musical
lessons
help
English
learners
more
than
Mandarin
learners.

The

was

1908.
The

the

Although
electric

at
that

none

The

Besides
the
sunny

film
producers
were
also
drawn
to
Hollywood
because
of
its
open

and
wide

of
natural

Another
reason
was
the
distance

Southern

which
made
it

for
Thomas

At

As

in
the

If

word

Los

and
the
movie

In

founded.
At
about
the

in
1929
in
the
Hollywood
Roosevelt

Tickets

Fox,
Metro?Goldwyn?Mayer
and
Warner

owned
almost
all
large
theatres
throughout
the
country
for
the
exhibition
of
their
movies.
The
period
between
the

1927
to

was

the
“Golden

【语篇解读】坐落于洛杉矶西部的好莱坞,是一座著名的城市,被称为全球电影制片厂和电影明星的中心。本文介绍了好莱坞成为电影制作中心的历史进程、原因和事件。
1.A 解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“for
movie
production
was
nature
sunlight”可知,对于电影制作最好的光源是日光,可推测画线部分单词意思为“光线;灯光”,故选A。
2.C 解析:细节理解题。由第三段最后一句“Besides
the
sunny
weather,
film
producers
were
also
drawn
to
Hollywood
because
of
its
open

and
wide

of

3.D 解析:细节理解题。第四段第三句“As
a
result,
in
the
East,
movie
producers
acting

of
Edison's

there
were
250
