America has some of the world’s best theme parks. Every kid grows up wanting to go to Disney, but there are plenty of other great amusement parks in the US.
Hersheypark, Pennsylvania
What’s better than chocolate and theme parks together? Head to Hersheypark to get the best of both worlds. You’ll have a front-row seat on their chocolate factory tour, as well as ride their 14 roller coasters (过山车) from mild to wild. They even have a zoo.
Address: 100 Hersheypark Dr, Hershey, PA 1703
Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio
You can抰 call yourself a theme park expert without visiting the second oldest park in the country. This is your daddy抯 theme park, and probably your grandpa抯, but that doesn抰 mean it is short on thrills. You抣l find no shortage of roller coasters; there are sixteen altogether. The coasters are plentiful, and so is the view, giving you a great look over the beautiful Lake Erie.
Address: 1 Cedar Point Dr, Sandusky, OH 44870
Knoebels, Pennsylvania
If you happen to be in Pennsylvania, make a visit to this one. You抳e got nothing to lose, as this one is free. That抯 the way Knoebels has been doing business for nearly a century. They have two roller coasters and over 60 rides in total, so they are free not because there is a lack of attractions. They know they抣l get plenty of support through concessions (特许权) and amazing word-of-mouth advertising.
Address: 391 Knoebels Blvd, Elysburg, PA 17824
Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, Florida
Florida is the tourist capital of the country. Universal’s theme parks match Disney in some aspects. There are twelve exciting roller coasters here. Fly through the air like a super hero or a dragon in the different movie worlds of Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, or Dr. Seuss. Let your imagination run wild!
Address: 6000 Universal Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819

Signs posted up and down the school hallway didn抰 let me forget: Snowball Dance Next Friday Night! No one would be asking me, the junior high school outcast (被抛弃的人). My face was ruined, and my balance was off — I had seizures (癫痫) without warning. All these were making my middle school life miserable. I kept my head down as I hurried to the classroom.
I stepped into the office where my teacher Mrs. Barrett waited. She learned that my grandmother had been teaching me to sew for years, but none of the other kids in the class knew it. Mrs. Barrett called me up to her desk. 揂 lot of girls need help with changes on their dresses for the Snowball Dance. I thought you could help me after school, she said. 揝ure, I said. Together with Mrs. Barrett, I sewed buttons, shortened some sleeves, and lengthened others.
Teresa, one of the most popular girls, came by to pick up her dress. 揜oberta designed and sewed it by hand,” Mrs. Barrett told her. “It’s fashionable! Thanks. You must have added this brilliant belt,” she said. “I tied ribbons to the end of a pearl necklace,” I said, looking down at my shabby shoes. Teresa didn’t get crowned (加冕) at the dance, but her Snowball Dance dress was the talk of the school during the following week. Word quickly spread that I was actually good at something. Soon the girls were coming to me and Mrs. Barrett for custom-made dresses. “We should organize a fashion show,” Mrs. Barrett said one day. We asked the girls in the office and they all wanted to participate. We had a packed auditorium (礼堂) for the show.
“This fashion show was a great success, and better than any dance could be. I think we pushed back the boundaries of fashion,” Mrs. Barrett said after the fashion show.
Those weren抰 the only boundaries we pushed back. Later, Mrs. Barrett encouraged me to run for student body president. 揟he kids have known your talent, she said. And I was elected president of the grade. I must say it抯 my luck to meet Mrs. Barrett in my life.
24. What do we know about the author before receiving Mrs. Barrett抯 request?
A. She was well liked by her classmates.
B. She wasn抰 interested in the dance at all.
C. She felt lonely, miserable and depressed.
D. She was unlucky, sensitive, but optimistic.
25. What did Mrs. Barrett ask the author to do?
A. Design a new dress for her.
B. Help her with the girls dresses.
C. Go to the Snowball Dance with her.
D. Get along with her classmates and cheer up.
26. Why did Teresa抯 dress become a popular topic in the school?
A. The dress was specially designed.
B. She was elected Snowball Queen.
C. She helped design her own dress.
D. Teresa was the most popular girl.
27. The author mainly owed her change to ________.
A. her special talent B. her hard work
C. her friendly classmates D. her teacher Mrs. Barrett

How many times have you complained that there are just not enough hours in the day to do what you need to, or wondered in frustration how the afternoon manages to slip by?
Each person has 24 hours in a day to spend. A certain amount of that is for the basics sleeping, eating, bathing and dressing. But after those hours are spent, how you use the rest of the time is really up to you.
Throughout the day, you make choices how long to read Facebook, how many TV shows to watch, or whether to take your child to the park or weed the garden.
These little bits of time may seem unimportant. After all, how many people add up the minutes they spend online, or consider the little bits of time they use to talk to their co-workers, or the time spent in hugging a crying child or loving an animal?
But these little bits are where the time that seems to get away from you goes. It doesn抰 disappear. It is used, but often forgotten.
Be aware and consider if you are using your time in a way that makes you happy. For example, a few minutes spent in talking to a child strengthen your relationship, help him or her grow and learn, and make you feel good. How would you feel if those minutes were spent on Facebook, walking your dog or taking a nap?
When life becomes unbalanced, it also becomes unhealthy. If you spend too much of your life on your work, your relationships at home suffer. If you focus all your time and energy on your partner, your friendships may falter. You may love your children deeply, but if all of your time and energy is spent on them, you will have little left for yourself or anyone else.
Time is irreplaceable. No one knows how long they will live. Live deliberately. Spend time wisely. Live and love and enjoy what you have to the fullest. Once a minute is gone, you will never again have it back.
28. The author doesn抰 consider the time spent in ________ as the little bits of time.
A. eating meals B. surfing the Internet
C. watching TV shows D. playing with children
29. What抯 the author抯 purpose in writing the text?
A. To teach readers about time management at work.
B. To tell readers how to save time in their daily life.
C. To remind readers to be aware of the little bits of time.
D. To encourage readers to spend more time with their families.
30. What does the underlined word 揻alter in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. Improve. B. Weaken.
C. Form. D. Continue.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The relationship between time management and success
B. How to make a balance between your work and life
C. What is the most important in life?
D. Making the most of the hours you have
D
Crying is hardly an activity encouraged by our society. Tears, whether they fill your eyes due to sorrow, anger or joy, typically make Americans feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. The shedder of tears (流泪者) is likely to apologize, even when a terrible event is the cause of his crying. A person who observes another person shedding tears is likely to do everything possible to put an end to the emotional outpouring. But judging from recent studies of crying behavior, links between illness and crying and the chemical composition of tears, both those responses to tears are often inappropriate and may even be counterproductive (适得其反).
Although some observers have suggested that crying is probably a way to ask for assistance from others, the shedding of tears is hardly necessary to get help. Vocal cries would have been quite enough, more likely than tears to gain attention. So, it appears that there must be something special about tears themselves.
It is universally accepted that human beings are the only animals that can shed emotional tears. Since evolution has given rise to few, if any, purposeless physiological (生理学的) responses, it is logical to assume that crying has one or more functions that contribute to survival.
Indeed, some new studies suggest that emotional tears may play a direct role in dealing with people’s intense (强烈的) emotions. Researchers have recently isolated several important chemicals from emotional tears. Among them is a chemical named endorphin, the body抯 natural stress-relieving substance. All the chemicals are found only in tears that are shed in response to emotions. Tears shed because of cutting up onions would contain no such substance.
At Tulane University抯 Environmental Analysis Laboratory, Dr. Peter Kastl and his colleagues report that they can use tears to discover drug abuse, to study the causes of 揹ry eye syndrome and the likely side effects of eye operations. Perhaps these researchers can even use tears to measure our exposure to environmental pollutants.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. One who sheds tears in public will be blamed.
B. Crying usually wins sympathy from other people.
C. Crying may annoy people and even result in sad events.
D. Shedding tears gives unpleasant feelings to Americans.
33. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Crying out of sorrow and shedding tears for happiness.
B. The embarrassment and unpleasant sensation of the observers.
C. The tear shedder抯 apology and the observer抯 effort to stop the crying.
D. Linking illness with crying and finding the chemical composition of tears.
34. What does the author say about crying?
A. It usually produces the desired effect.
B. It is meant to get attention and assistance.
C. It must have a role to play in man抯 survival.
D. It is a pointless physiological response to the environment.
35. What can be inferred from the new studies of tears?
A. Exposure to onions may increase emotional tears.
B. Emotional tears have the function of reducing stress.
C. Emotional tears can give rise to 揹ry eye syndrome in some cases.
D. Environmental pollutants may cause the shedding of emotional tears.

If someone does not want to be interrupted, eye contact may be avoided.
Convey something about a relationship between people. When you dislike someone, you tend to avoid eye contact and your pupil (瞳孔) size is often reduced. ___39___ Dilation (扩张) of the pupils is a reaction to the sight of someone attractive, so increased eye contact could be a biological mechanism (生理机制) to help find a potential partner. ___40___

书面表达
Dear Nick,
Thank you for your letter. You are curious about my life as a Senior Three student, who is preparing for the college entrance exam and let me tell you about it.
To tell you the truth, life in Senior 3 is really stressful. My teachers are my first source of pressure, for they always emphasize that on no condition should we ignore the importance of study. Besides, peer pressure is also great. My classmates are all sparing no effort to study, and I抦 afraid I will be left behind. What抯 more, we are burdened with the pressure from our parents, whose expectations for us are too high to live up to.
Serious as it is, we should find ways to relieve our pressure. Listening to music is a good way to get rid of the stress and doing sports also helps a lot.
Best wishes!

Yours,
Li Hua
