Katherine Johnson whose life was described in the movie Hidden Figures died on February 24, 2020, aged 101. The 2016 movie describes a real story of some female African-American mathematicians who joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and led a mission to put the first man on the moon in the 1950s when racial discrimination was widespread.
揘ASA is deeply saddened by the loss of a leader from our pioneering days, said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine on the webpage of NASA.揗s. Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers (边界) of space and she also played an important role in opening doors for women and people of color to explore space. At NASA we will never forget her courage and leadership and the achievements we could not have reached without her.”
Johnson was born in West Virginia in 1918. She graduated from West Virginia State University with a major in mathematics and became a teacher at a public school. She was also the first African-American woman to attend graduate school in mathematics at West Virginia University until she left school to focus on raising children.

A relative told her about open positions at the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics抯 Langley laboratory, and she began to work at Langley the next year. NASA depended on humans for complicated aerospace (航空) calculation as there was no high-functioning electronic computer. Female mathematicians usually took the job as their salary was lower. Johnson was one of those African-American human computers.
Johnson was initially in charge of aerospace analysis and assigned to a space development mission when NASA was launched in 1958. Then she worked for the 1961 suborbital (亚轨道的) flight of astronaut Alan Shepard and the 1962 orbital flight of John Glenn. Johnson continued to participate in missions after she retired in 1986. Despite not being documented by researchers since 1968, the sengi (象鼩), a tiny big-eyed mouse with a long tail and a trunk-like nose that’s native to Somalia in Africa, was rediscovered living in well-preserved habitat in neighboring Djibouti this year, and in quite healthy numbers.
An exploration beginning in 2019 looked to use local knowledge about the sengi from the people of Djibouti who said it was still there. Sure enough, it took only one trap filled with coconut, peanut butter and yeast to find the little guy.
揑t was surprising, said Steven Heritage, a research scientist at Duke University in the US. 揥hen we opened the first trap and saw the little tuft of hair on the tip of its tail, we just looked at one another and couldn抰 believe it. A number of small mammal (哺乳动物) surveys since the 1970s did not find the Somali sengi in Djibouti—it was indeed a serendipitous discovery.”
One of the least understood members of the 20 species Elephantulus (象鼩属), the sengi lives in habitats that are unsuitable for most human activities, allowing it to remain relatively undisturbed and safe.
揢sually when we rediscover lost species, we find just one or two individuals and have to act quickly to try to prevent their extinction, said Robin Moore, of the Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) group.
The team set 1,000 traps and caught 12 of the little sengis while making the first video and photographic documentation of the animal for science. Along with rediscovering the species, the team gathered DNA samples which later showed the Somali sengi to be more closely related to sengis in other corners of Africa like Morocco and South Africa.
This finding has suggested that the Somali sengi needs to be placed in a new genus梞oving from Elephantulus to Galegeeska.
Like all great discoveries in science, the questions answered are only equal to the new mysteries presented, but the researchers work has highlighted Djibouti as a biodiverse (具有生物多样性的) nation worthy of scientific study. With any luck, perhaps more discoveries are waiting to be made among its desert and salt lakes.
8.What made the finding of the Somali sengi special?
A. It was rediscovered by Somalis.
B. It looked surprisingly different.
C. It reappeared in Africa after 52 years.
D. It had become smart enough to avoid being trapped.
9. What does the underlined word serendipitous in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unrealistic. B. Scientific. C. Unreported. D. Accidental.
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. How the Somali sengi manages to survive.
B. Why the Somali sengi can live peacefully.
C. How human activities affect the Somali sengi.
D. What environment the Somali sengi should live in.
11.How did the team know the relationships between the Somali sengi and other sengis?
A. By doing DNA tests for them.
B. By studying their living habits.
C. By comparing their appearances.
D. By studying documents about them.

Dieters have long sworn that grapefruit helps them lose weight. The Grapefruit Diet, also called the Hollywood Diet, dates back to the 1930s and has a host of celebrity fans including singer Kylie Minogue. It involves having grapefruit or grapefruit juice with every meal while cutting back on calories.
Now, scientists are beginning to believe them.
A study has found that drinking grapefruit juice when eating fatty food lowers the amount of weight put on by up to a fifth.
The research also suggested that grapefruit could be as good as prescription drugs at keeping blood sugar levels under control梐 key part of managing diabetes.
The experiments were conducted on mice梑ut researchers say the results are true for humans. Professor Joseph Napoli, of the University of California, Berkeley, said, 揥e see all sorts of tricks about nutrition. But these results, based on controlled experiments, make it necessary to study the potential health-promoting properties of grapefruit juice further.
The researchers found that when the mice were fed fatty food for three months, those given grapefruit juice to drink gained up to 18 percent less weight than those given water.
They also had lower blood sugar and insulin levels梔espite eating the same number of calories and doing the same amount of exercise as the mice who drank water. In fact, grapefruit juice was as good at controlling insulin as the widely used diabetes drugs, the journal PLOS ONE reports.
However, the fruit juice only had an effect on weight when the animals ate fatty food. The researchers said they did not know how grapefruit stops the pounds from piling on.
Spokesman Mariette Abrahams, a dietician, said until then it is too early for people to try grapefruit diets. 揋rapefruit should be part of a healthy balanced diet, but it shouldn抰 be the focus of the diet. she said.
12. What can be known about the Hollywood Diet?
It was more popular in the 1930s than any time.
It may appeal to fat people.
Scientists may think it is nonsense.
13. What did the experiments on mice show?
They should have been conducted on humans.
The results apply to humans too.
Grapefruit could cure diabetes.
Mice prefer grapefruit juice to water.
14. In which case will grapefruit juice make a difference to weight loss?
The mice with high blood sugar.
The mice doing a lot of exercise.
The mice on a fatty diet.
The mice taking prescription drugs.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
Nutrition of Grapefruit
Experiment on Grapefruit

Recycling refers to the process of collecting used materials which are usually considered as ‘waste’ and reprocessing them. Some of the most common items that are recycled are plastic, glass, paper, batteries, etc. Recycling is good for us, for manufacturers (制造商) and for our environment. 16 Here are some good reasons why everyone should recycle.
One of the biggest reasons is that recycling reduces the pressure on our environment. By using waste products in a meaningful way, we can slowly decrease the size of our landfills. As the population grows, it will become difficult for the landfills to hold so much trash. When this happens, our cities will face pollution, poisoning and many health problems. 17
We know that recycling involves the processing and usage of core elements of old products for the production of new products. 18 For example, once an old newspaper is recycled, we do not need to use the resource of another tree to produce new paper products. This way, proper recycling can help us preserve our natural resources.
19 Reusing old things costs less than buying new ones. In most states in America, it抯 actually more costly to get rid of waste than to recycle. Some recycling companies buy wastes from neighborhoods for their recycling activities. This brings you extra money.
Everyone can make a difference. If you think that it makes no difference whether you recycle or not, think again! More than half of the waste that each of us creates each year can be recycled, but a lot of it ends up being buried. 20 After all, many hands make light work.
Recycling is good for your wallet.
This helps in saving our natural resources.
It stops humans from damaging the environment.
Recycling helps to get rid of old things and waste.
However, not everyone knows how important it is to recycle.
When each of us takes action, it all adds up and makes a real difference.
Recycling helps to keep the pollution under control and decrease it little by little.

Last Sunday, I received a phone call from my friend, Alun. He asked me to help with his group who entertained at the local hospitals. Due to my unfinished homework, I was unwilling to go, but finally I was persuaded to help out this one time, which proved to be an unforgettable and meaningful experience.
That evening, Alun picked me up and we went to a local hospital. I was going to join his musical group with my guitar and maybe sing some solo songs as well.
The hospital was large. When guided into the hall we were surprised to see so many patients and staff there. A sight like this aroused our sympathy. Some patients were in wheelchairs or with their arms in bandages, while others were with their drips attached. Maybe their days seemed to be dull during the period of treatment, so our coming brought some color into their lives. Seeing their happy faces, I thought joining Alun抯 group was a worthwhile thing to do.
Among the audience, I spotted one particular young girl aged about 13 who was wearing a head scarf and appeared to be more delighted than the others. When we started our performance, excitement filled the hall. Alun mentioned to me that the young girl who I had noticed earlier was singing along with all our songs quietly to herself. At a break, out of curiosity, I asked one of the nurses about the girl. She said that the girl suffered serious burns and was being treated and that she was a bit down these days, but our performance had lifted the girl抯 spirits. Our songs moved all the people present. They all cheered for us, including the young girl and we were inspired. Facing these lovely people, we really wanted to do more.
Paragraph 1:
We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us. ____________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 1:
We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us. At first, she refused our suggestion, saying she had never sung in front of audience before, and that she was afraid of getting it wrong. However, after our encouragement, she decided to try one song but only as part of our group, which turned out to be a success. She had a soft and clear voice and it was amazing. The audience looked at her with adoration. They warmly applauded and it lasted for several minutes.
Paragraph 2:
After her performance, I saw a change in the girl抯 eyes. They seemed much brighter than when we had first met her just a couple of hours ago. She appeared to have gained a lot of confidence from this experience. She told me we had made her day. A bright smile spread across the little girl抯 face. I was pleased that I neither missed the opportunity to help others nor just thought of myself and my own needs. Stepping out not only helped people in need, but also gave me the sweet taste of helping others.
