文化背景
发明大王 爱迪生,英文姓氏: Thomas Alva Edison。举世闻名的美国电学家和发明家,被誉为“世界发明大王”,一生中的发明有1000多项。他除了在留声机、电灯、电话、电报、电影等方面的发明和贡献以外,在矿业、建筑业、化工等领域也有不少著名的创造和真知灼见。爱迪生一生共有约两千项创造发明,为人类的文明和进步作出了巨大的贡献。   
爱迪生同时也是一位伟大的企业家,1879年,爱迪生创办了“爱迪生电力照明公司”,1880年,白炽灯上市销售,1890年,爱迪生已经将其各种业务组建成为爱迪生通用电气公司。1891年,爱迪生的细灯丝、高真空白炽灯泡获得专利。1892年,汤姆•休斯顿公司与爱迪生电力照明公司合并成立了通用电气公司。开始了通用电气在电气领域长达一个世纪的统治地位。

discover“发现”,指发现的对象是本来存在的,invent发明,发明的对象是以前没有的新东西,如工具、手段或方法。

II、use的用法
use 是初中英语中的常用词,它的用法灵活,既可作名词,又可作动词。同学们在实际运用中应注意以下几点:
1. use作名词时,其发音为/ju:s/。它既可以作可数名词,也可以作不可数名词,意为“用处;用法;使用;利用”等。
如: This machine has many uses. 这种机器有许多用处。
The teachers' desk is for the use of teacher. 讲桌是供老师用的。
2. use作动词时,其发音为/ju:z/。一般作及物动词,意为“使用;利用;消耗;用掉”,表示使用工具、手段等。
如: Can you use computer 你会用电脑吗
They used him to shock the others. 他们利用他来吓唬别人。
3 含有be used的常用短语:
1). used to do sth.意为"过去常常做某事",它表示过去经常发生的动作或存在的状态,而现在已不再发生或存在。这个短语含有今昔对比之意,其否定形式常用used not to或didn't use to。反意疑问句中应该用did/didn't或used/usedn't。例如:
  I used to swim in this river when I was young.我年轻时常在这条河里游泳。
  They used to be good friends, didn't they 他们过去是好朋友,是吗?
2). be used to sth. / doing sth.意为"习惯、适应某事/做某事",它表示习惯于某一客观事实或状态,其中to是介词,后面跟名词、代词或动名词;be used可用于多种时态;如强调动作可用get或become替换be。例如:
  Old people are used to getting up early in the morning.老年人习惯早晨很早起床。
  I wasn't used to city life, but now I have got used to living in this city.我以前不习惯都市生活,但现在我已习惯住在这座城市了。
如:I'm used to hardship. 我习惯于艰苦。
I've got used to having porridge for breakfast. 我已经习惯于早餐喝粥了。
3). be used to do sth.意为"被用来做某事",其中use表"使用"之意,是被动语态形式,to是动词不定式符号。例如:
  Wood can be used to make paper.树木可以用来造纸。
Knives are used to cut things.刀用来切东西。
4)、be used as表示“被用作……”,介词as意思是“作为”的意思,其后一般接名词,强调使用的工具及手段。
e.g. He used the stick as a ruler.他用树枝当尺子。
This book can be used as a textbook.这本书可以当作教科书来用。
5)、be used by表示“被……使用”,by后接动作的执行者。
This kind of machine is used by farmers for getting in crops.

8). make use of sth.意为"利用、使用某物",其中use也是名词,可用good, full, more, little等形容词来修饰。同学们应特别注意它的被动形式。例如:
  We must make full use of time to study.我们必须充分利用时间来学习。

词语用法

helpful是由名词help加上-ful后缀构成的形容词,意为“有帮助的”,类似的形容词还有:
thank—thankful (感谢的,感激的) grate—grateful(感谢的,感激的)
use—useful (有用的) wonder—wonderful(令人惊奇的)
forget—forgetful (健忘的) success—successful(成功的)
beauty—beautiful (美丽的) pain—painful(疼痛的)

本句中的情态动词could用来表示逻辑上或理论上的可能性,而不是某种实际上将要发生或正在发生的可能性。

特别提示
could也表示人或动物的内在能力,有某种知识或者技能而能够做某事。

From pie plate to flying disk
A baker named William Russel Frisbie, of Warren, Connecticut, and later of Bridgeport, came up with a clever marketing idea back in the 1870s. He put the family name in relief on the bottom of the light tin pans in which his company’s homemade pies were sold. The pans were reusable, but every time a housewife started to bake a pie in one, she would see the name Frisbie and, it was hoped, think, "How much easier to buy one". Eventually Mr. Frisbie’s pies were sold throughout much of Connecticut, including New Haven. There, sometime in the 1940s, Yale students began sailing the pie tins through the air and catching them. A decade later, out in California, a flying-saucer enthusiast named Walter Frederick Morrison designed a saucer-like disk for playing catch. It was produced by a company named Wham-O. On a promotional tour of college campuses, the president of Wham-O encountered the pie-plate-tossing craze at Yale. And so the flying saucer from California was renamed after the pie plate from Connecticut. Of course the name was changed from Frisbie to Frisbee to avoid any legal problems.
