Sir John Gurdon, a British scientist, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012, said he had predicted at the time of his frog experiments that the successful cloning of a mammal would happen within 50 years, and that “maybe the same answer is appropriate” for the step to human cloning. Parents who lose children in accidents may be able to clone “copies” to replace them then.
Although any attempt to clone an entire human would raise complex moral issues, the biologist claimed people would soon overcome their concerns if the technique became medically useful. Cloning was regarded with extreme doubts when it was first developed but became widely accepted after the birth of Louise Brown, the first “test?tube baby”. He said, “When my first frog experiments were done, an American reporter asked how long it would be before these things could be done in mammals or humans. I said, ’Well, it could be anytime between 10 years and 100 years — how about 50 years?’ It turned out that it wasn’t far off the mark as far as Dolly was concerned. Maybe the same answer is appropriate.” Sir John added that cloning a human being effectively means making an identical twin, and doctors would therefore simply be “copying what nature has already produced”.
The average vote on allowing parents of deceased children, who are no longer fertile (能生育的), to create another by using the mother’s eggs and skin cells from the first child, thinking the technique was safe and effective, is 60 percent in favor. The reasons for “no” are usually that the new children would feel they are some sort of replacements for something.
1.Sir John predicted the human cloning would be a reality in ________ at most.
A.about 100 years B.about 50 years
C. about 60 years D.about 10 years
2.According to the text, which statement is NOT true?
A.Human cloning is creating something that didn’t exist before.
B.Human cloning is still a controversial topic.

D.Louise Brown is the first “test?tube baby”.
3.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

When I was in primary school, I got into an argument with a boy in my class. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson learned that day.
I was convinced that “I” was right and “he” was wrong — and he was just as convinced that “I” was wrong and “he” was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson. She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other.
In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the object was. “White,” he answered.
I couldn’t believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously black! Another argument started between my classmate and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go to stand where the boy was standing and told him to come to stand where I had been. We changed places, and then she asked me what the color of the object was. I had to answer, “White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his viewpoint it was white. Only from my side was it black.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day: You must stand in the other person’s shoes and look at the situation through their eyes in order to truly understand their perspective (看法).
4. When brought up to the front of the class, the two students were sitting .
A. side by side B. face to face
C. back to back D. facing the blackboard
5. From the author’s classmate’s side, the first time he couldn’t know .
A. his side of the object was black
B. his side of the object was white
C. the other side of the object was black
D. the other side of the object was white
6. What can we conclude from the text?
A. We should imagine that we’re in the other person’s situation.
B. A teacher should give students a lesson before the class.
C. A large, round object has two differently colored sides.
D. A lesson learned in the past should never be forgotten.
7. Which of the following can best describe the teacher?
A. Patient. B. Wise. C. Rude. D. Kind.
C
The Christmas season has always been important for the economy. Stores, hotels and travel businesses usually make their money at Christmas time. But it is unclear if the holiday season helps other industries. Governments are hoping to re-open their economies in time for Christmas. Some economists, however, wonder if it will do any good. The question is especially important this year. There is a risk that re-opening too early could hurt public health, economic growth and employment.
In Britain, December sales are usually around 12 percent of the yearly total. Economists say that helps retail businesses, even if people buy less in January to recover from December spending.
However, lower-priced Black Friday sales across Europe in late November has made December spending less important. The growth in online purchasing also makes it less necessary for some stores to stay open. German retail association HDE expects online sales to fuel an increase of 1.2 percent over 2019.
Some economists believe that even if people do not buy before Christmas, they will spend on other things. Paul Donovan is chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management. He said in his weekly blog, “Not spending on drinks at a Christmas party translates into the purchase of new furniture.”
And usually, productivity drops as Christmas nears. Workers rush out to buy things or go to parties. One research company found that 25 percent of workers said they did less work or tried to avoid more work during the holiday season.
There are even some economists who believe the act of buying gifts is bad for the economy. As Yale economist Joel Waldfogel once said that when people pay a lot for gifts, especially unwanted gifts, that was like destroying their economic value.
Most economists continue to argue about this idea. However, few disagree that Christmas does have unintended and harmful effects on the economy, from drunk-driving accidents to increased paper waste. Information on new coronavirus cases in coming days will show if Europe can reopen for Christmas. But for the economy, it may not make any difference.
( )32. How many reasons have made spending in December less important?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
( )33. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. Many people like to buy furniture before Christmas.

D. Drinking at a Christmas party will cost you a lot.
( )34. Which opinion do most economists agree with?
A. Productivity increases due to the Christmas season.
B. Business should reopen for Christmas.
C. Christmas don’t have good effects on the economy.
D. Christmas sales helps business a lot.
( )35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. If European can reopen for Christmas.
B. Why Christmas season is important for the economy.
C. Influences of Christmas season on economy.
D. Solutions to the European reopen.

Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss are some of the super?models of the fashion world. But there are other models whose faces you've never seen. They work in body parts modeling, a special area of the modeling business. You have probably seen their beautiful hands or feet in advertisements for gloves or shoes.
Helmer, a modeling expert, notes that hands, feet and legs are the most requested body parts for both male and female models. However, if you have attractive eyes, hair, lips or teeth, you can have a try, too. On average, body parts models earn $ 1,000 per day for TV advertisements, and $ 2,000 to $ 5,000 a day for print advertisements. A body parts model with great legs and feet can earn up to $ 75,000 a year, and even more in New York City, which is home to advertising companies.
There are top?of?the?line parts models. An example is Ellen Sirot, one of the highest?paid hand and foot models in the U.S. Sirot said as a hand model, she can earn as much as $ 10,000 a day. But feet modelling doesn't pay much because there aren't many foot jobs.
“It is not enough to have beautiful hands and feet. You have to be able to act with them,” Sirot said. “You need those parts to show feelings to successfully sell a product.”
And the fingers and toes must be in excellent condition at any time. Sirot said she wears shoes one size bigger to protect her feet. She said she never wears high?heeled (高跟的) shoes except when she's modeling. Besides, she moisturizes (使湿润) hands and feet 10 times a day. And she wears cotton gloves when she leaves the house — even when she's sunbathing.
12.Body parts modeling is special because ________.
A.models cannot show their faces
B.models may be looked down upon
C.models must be beautiful and famous
D.models may only show one body part
13.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Beautiful lips are badly needed.
B.Models can make much money.
C.Female models are more famous.
D.Most models live in New York City.
14.To succeed in modeling, Ellen Sirot ________.
A.washes her hands and feet once an hour
B.has to wear high?heeled shoes every day
C.keeps her hands and feet in perfect shape
D.sunbathes to keep her hands and feet beautiful
15.What does this passage mainly tell us?
A.Ellen Sirot, a hand and foot model.
