Held from Nov 5 to 10 in Shanghai, the third China International Import Expo (CIIE) became “a perfect platform for promoting international innovation and cooperation”, People’s Daily noted. Let’s take a look at two of them.
Portable kayak
Lightweight equipment is what all sport lovers desire. At the CIIE, the French sporting goods company Decathlon launched its portable kayak ITIWIT X500. According to the company, the kayak measures 380 cm in length and 65 cm in width when inflated (充气). When not in use, it can be folded up to the size of a backpack. It consists of five independent air chambers. Even if two of them don’t work, the kayak floats are enough for sports enthusiasts to return to the shore safely.
Mind-reading ping-pong robot
Like ping-pong but afraid of criticism from your coach? The sixth generation of the Forpheus ping-pong robot from Japanese tech company Omron may help you. The robot has a robotic arm that can imitate humans. It can actually live up to the feeling of playing against a real opponent. At the same time, it can use sensors and five cameras to work out where you are and how you’re moving. After analyzing your abilities, it can adjust its own playing level to match yours. The robot “pursues harmony of humans and machines by patiently teaching us how to play ping-pong”, noted The Verge.7194554305935
What is the function of the five independent air chambers?
To make the kayak light.7194554504055
To make the kayak easy to be folded up.7194554702175
To make the kayak look cool.7194554900295
To make the kayak safer.
What is the difference between the mind-reading ping-pong robot and human coaches?
The robot doesn’t embarrass people when teaching.
The robot fails to figure out human movement.
The robot can’t create the feeling of a real ping-pong match.
The robot isn’t able to match people’s different skill levels.
What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?
To advertise some products shown at the CIIE.
To introduce some products shown at the CIIE.
To compare and analyze some products shown at the CIIE.
To explain how to use some products shown at the CIIE. B7010407258685
I’ve been taking time this week to smell the roses. I bend over in my neighbors’ front yard,
check that nobody is watching, then bury my head in the flowers.
I’ve also been walking into bakeries and walking around without buying anything.
After having surgery on my broken nose 18 months ago, I haven’t been able to smell or taste things. This week, however, my nose is back in business.
高三英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 3 页
I’ve been fascinated by smells, and it’s given me a new way of thinking. Smell is just one
of the little bits and pieces that make life enjoyable, but which we often ignore. I remember once, when my son was 5 months old, I was carrying him down the street. Wind swept through and almost tipped us over. He threw his little head back and giggled (傻笑). He’d never felt the wind on his face. When is the last time I laughed at the weather?
The first time I ate bacon, I rushed home to my parents, determined that we ate this
deliciousness at every meal. My father smiled and agreed.
Do you recall when you learned that the voice actors of Mickey and Minnie Mouse were married in real life? Do you enjoy sleeping in new, clean bed sheets?
We don’t write postcards about the small things. We don’t frame them in photographs.
They aren’t that great or grand, but without them, life is altogether too loud. These quiet experiences give us a chance to enjoy the simple fact of being alive.
As my sense of smell returns to me, it’s like I’m smelling things for the first time. They’re
full of memories and magic. Food tastes better, and the air is indeed sweet. I know what the poets mean now. It almost makes my broken nose worthwhile. Now, I am waiting for this bandage to come off. There’s an itch (痒) I can’t reach!
What does the writer try to do in the first two paragraphs?
discuss new ways to enjoy leisure time
show that she loves doing secret things
give examples of how she kills time
get readers to wonder about her behavior
What does the underlined part “a new way of thinking” in Paragraph 4 mean?
the ability to discover the joy of small things
the habit of overcoming ignorance
the ability to fully use our limited attention
the habit of making personal reflections
What did the author take for granted before?
A. Memories and magic. B. Valuing being alive.
C. Her sense of smell. D. Laughing at the weather.
Which word can be used to describe the writer’s feeling while writing the passage?
A. Depressed B. Pleased
C. Disturbed D. Annoyed

Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her
first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on Oct 8 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.
Gluck was honored “for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with plain beauty, makes
individual existence universal”. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from her
高三英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 4 页
life, “she is not to be regarded as a confessional poet (告白派诗人). Gluck seeks the universal,” Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.
Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences
into universal themes covering life, loss, and loneliness. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is straightforward and ... a voice full of humor and biting wit,” he said.
For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show
rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “raw wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck’s poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.
When her work Faithful Virtuous Night received a National Book Award for Poetry in
2014, a judge for the award went on to say, the collection comes from “a world where darkness blurs (使模糊) ordinarily sharp edges around the oppositions ... [of] our lives-loss and renewal, male and female, the living and the dead”.
Although she’s already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing,
Gluck did feel honored to be given the Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the poet responded by saying, “It’s too new... I don’t know really what it means.” Her only hope is that she can continue her daily life.
28 What can we know about Louise Gluck?
Her first book was published in 1993.
The Wild Iris won her the Nobel Prize in literature.
She draws from her life experiences in her writing.
She is seen as a successful confessional poet.
What does Olsson think of Gluck’s poems?
They focus on individual existence.
They are too dark for readers.
They are mainly about human psychology.
They are frank and humorous in style.
Why does the author mention Snowdrops in paragraph 4?
To introduce the main plots of this poem.
To describe Gluck’s creativity in choosing themes.
To show the features of Gluck’s poetry.
To explain Gluck’s purpose in writing Snowdrops.
How does Gluck feel about winning the Nobel Prize in literature?
She is not qualified for the prize.
It is not meaningful for her.
It may influence her daily life.
The history of the award isn’t long.

From the moon to Mars, scientists have been hunting for alien life in the solar system for decades.
However, Venus was not regarded as an ideal place because of its hot temperature and dry
atmosphere. But a recent discovery of traces of a gas in the clouds of Venus has excited astronomers, as it may serve as a potential sign of life.
On Sept 14, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada announced that scientists have
detected phosphine (磷化氢) in the clouds of Venus. Phosphine is a colorless, poisonous gas that has a smell of garlic. Though poisonous, it is viewed as a possible sign of life because on Earth the gas is made by microorganisms that live in oxygen-free environments.
“I was very surprised, in fact,” astronomer Jane Greaves of Cardiff University in Wales
and lead author of the research, told MSN. “There is a chance that we have detected some kind of living organism in the clouds of Venus.”
This layer of clouds is about 48 kilometers above the Venus surface, with its temperature
ranging from 30 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (about -1 to 93 ?C). Scientists have concluded that if life exists on Venus, the clouds are likely the only place where it would survive.
Scientists went through every possibility that could have led to the formation of phosphine
gas in Venus’ clouds, including volcanoes, lightning strikes, small meteorites (陨石) falling into the atmosphere. But they ruled all of them out. It was concluded that there is no explanation for the existence of this gas in Venus’ clouds, other than the presence of life, USA Today reported.
Although the detection of phosphine is not solid evidence for life, this finding is great
enough to change scientists’ view on Venus, which is thought to be a completely inhospitable (不适合居住的) planet.
What is the text mainly about?
A newly detected gas may indicate possible existence of life on Venus.
Scientists found the best place on Venus for humans to live.
The environment on Venus changed in favor of life.
Phosphine formed on Venus means alien life is present.
What can we learn about phosphine from the text?
It has no smell at all.
It only exists on Venus.
It can be produced by microorganisms.
It is a sign of the existence of oxygen.
What can we infer from paragraphs 4 and 5?
Various living organisms have been detected on Venus.
The higher the cloud is above Venus, the warmer it is.
The clouds are rich in phosphine.
If life exists on Venus, it is likely in the clouds.
What did scientists conclude about the phosphine gas detected on Venus?
高三英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 6 页
It could be formed as a result of the falling of meteorites.
It could be a sign that there is life in Venus’ clouds.
It could be caused by volcanoes and lightning strikes.
It proves that Venus is another habitable planet.

For many, public speaking especially in English speaking competitions can be quite challenging, but it doesn’t mean we can’t improve. Here is Li Aiyun, a teacher at Nanjing Foreign Language School who offers three tips to help us. Let’s take a look!
Do not over prepare.
Practicing may help speakers not feel as nervous, but over-preparing can cause problems.
When speakers over prepare their speeches, 36 . Sometimes young speakers will try
to analyze a topic from an adult’s view, using complex words they don’t understand.
Listen to the questions or topics carefully.
Though speeches can be prepared in advance, 37 . Listening carefully can help
you be an effective, focused speaker. Li gave an example. “A contestant talked about her dog’s
bravery, and I asked if she could offer an example. Instead of talking about bravery, she talked
about different types of dogs such as guide dogs and police dogs. 38 .” Li said.
39 .9861554846955
Compassion (同理心) is important for public speakers. 40 . Li gave another
example: When a contestant mentioned that hitting a snowman is fun, Li asked, “Have your ever thought about the snowman’s feelings?” Without consideration, the boy replied, “Snowmen do not have emotions.”
As Li put it, “Communication is the final purpose of public speaking.” The speaker who
shows compassion is the one who is remembered.
Put yourself in others’ shoes
Prepare in advance as much as possible
It helps the audience relate to the speaker
It was not to the point, and not an effective answer
he could have a much better interaction with the audience
there is still the challenge of answering questions from judges
they are very likely to include too much information and material

I felt so nervous. It was the day of my interview. I woke up early just to make sure I would
have time to get prepared. It felt like a normal Monday, but for me, this day was very important. There was a lot of pressure.
After showering, I put on the outfit I had carefully chosen and laid out the night before. I
looked at my reflection in the mirror. “You can do this,” I encouraged myself. I ate breakfast and fed my cat. I made my way to the bus stop and waited patiently. Aside from the rapid tapping of my right foot, no one could tell that I was so nervous.

When I arrived at my stop, I walked to the office. The building was so tall and I felt small
in its shadow. But I also felt hopeful. This will be a great opportunity, I thought. And what is there to lose? Looking down at my watch, I noticed that I was early. This allowed plenty of time to review my resume (简历) and further prepare myself for the interview.
The doors of the building were impressive, all steel and glass and very modern.
When I walked in, someone showed me the waiting area and offered me a cup of coffee. After a few moments, a man in a nice suit told me to join him. As we walked toward the elevators, I began to feel anxious. The palms of my hands began to sweat. It seemed like an hour had passed before I heard the “ding” of the elevators opening.
We got into the elevator, full of men and women dressed to the nines.
“It’s quite a large office,” the man said to me. I chuckled nervously. I could feel myself getting warmer. I couldn’t wait to hear that comforting “ding” that signaled an escape.
As the elevator climbed, I again nervously checked my watch. Just as I looked down, it
happened.

The elevator came to a stop between floors. My nervousness turned into fear at once. But I immediately realized that it was better to act than to just stand. First, I pressed the emergency button. Then I asked people to lean their backs against the wall of the elevator and adjust their breathing. But suddenly, a man jumped up and down irritably. “What a terrible elevator!” he said angrily. I rushed to stop him. “Please stop! It could be very dangerous. We should calm down and wait for help!” Fortunately, everyone calmed down then. We just waited and waited. I felt anxious and checked my watch.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. Obviously, I would be late, and I
thought that the interviewers couldn’t be in a good mood. Finally, the rescuers arrived, and as

soon as the door opened, I prepared to run to the office. But all of a sudden, a hand rested on my shoulder. I turned around and saw the man smiling at me. “Don’t worry, young man. You’ve done a good job. Congratulations on passing the interview.” I chuckled in surprise.
Version 2
The elevator came to a stop between floors. Not knowing what was wrong, everyone in it
got nervous quickly. Someone pressed the emergency button, and we were told that it would take the rescue team at least an hour to complete the repair work, which meant we had to be trapped in this narrow and hot space, waiting. Hearing this, people were anxious, and I couldn’t help worrying about the interview. With the clock ticking, I fell into desperation.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. I was so frustrated that my
well-prepared resume wouldn’t work. Just when I gave up hope, the beautiful “ding” sound set me free from those messy thoughts. A receptionist in a suit stopped me after I had stepped out of the elevator and informed me of another interview opportunity because of the incident. At that moment, I could hardly describe my excitement. Life is just like a box of chocolates, and we never know what we will get. So don’t quit hoping even in the face of difficulty.

recent years. It’s no big secret that children like sweets, snacks and fast food.Fast food restaurants make fatty meals even more popular by including toys. However, there are healthy foods that children can enjoy just as much as other choices.Apple sticks dipped in
butter are a delicious choice for midday snacks.Following the suggestions in the food
pyramid is an easy way to make sure that a child has all of the nutrition he or she needs. My second suggestion is exercise.Exercise may seem like a dull activity, but it
really can be enjoyable.Going for a bike ride, taking a walk around the neighborhood or running around the playground are all fun ways for children to get out and get
moving.Fitness for kids is very different to fitness for adults. While adults often have a
strong will to force themselves to exercise, kids usually would much rather sit in front of
the television and watch their favourite cartoons. It’s important to make things fun to get a child’s attention and peak his or her interest. Finally,it is extremely important for overweight children to stick to a healthy lifestyle. The lifestyles of overweight children can
prevent them from improving their health.Eating healthy foods and making fitness for kids
a fun experience can help get children on the right track to a healthier lifestyle.
