Class Opening and Review
Step1 GREETING
Say Good morning/afternoon, class! Where do we live?
Step2 PLAY "SIMON SAYS"
Play "Simon Says" to review north, south, east, west, map, China, speak and Chinese. First agree on what the students will say when you (or a volunteer leader)tell them to speak Chinese.
Step3 REVIEW
Use a question-and-answer drill to review country and other vocabulary:
What color is this country?
What country is north of the __(color)country?
What country is this?(for China only. )
Step4 Canada, English, capital city.
DEMONSTRATE
Demonstrate Canada with a map. Draw attention to the big letter at the beginning of the word.
Ask the students questions they probably can already answer about Canada. For example:
Do they speak Chinese in Canada?
Where do Jenny and Danny live?
Demonstrate capital city by drawing parallels, in English, between Beijing and Ottawa. For example:
(Point to Beijing on a map.)What is this? This is Beijing. Beijing is a city. It is the capital city of our country. What is our country? Our country is China.
(Point to Ottawa.) This is the capital city of Canada.
Discuss what the students know about Canada.

Note that in Canada, they speak English and French because many French people lived in Canada when Canada became a country.
Has anyone heard of Niagara Falls? How?
Play the audiotape as the students read along.
Step6 PRACTICE
Ask for volunteers to point to the capital cities of countries on your world map that you identify by pointing or by color. For example:
(Point to a country on the map.) Point to the capital city of this country. Point to the capital city of the___ (color) country.
Divide the class into two groups. One group "lives in Canada" and one group 搇ives in China. You stand with one group, and then the other group, and lead a dialogue such as this:
Teacher: What country is this?
Students: China/Canada.
Teacher: Where do we live?
Students: China/Canada.
Teacher: (Point to the other group. )Where do they live?
Students: China/Canada.
Teacher: What do we/they speak?
Students: Chinese/English.
Teacher: We speak __, but...
Students: We speak __, but they speak
Step7 How much do you know about the U.S.?
Discuss what the students know about the U.S..
