The Olympic Games Show
The ancient Olympics started in Athens, Greece in 776BC. Then, only one country, Greece competed in the Games. Slaves and women were not prevented from competing. The athletes trained hard. The winners could get wreaths made of olive leaves. They did not receive money but they could get presents from their hometowns. There were some events such as running and jumping. The motto of the Games was “Swifter, Higher and stronger.”The Games were held every four years, so are the modern ones.
In 1894, Coubertin set up the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. There are two sets of Games---the winter and summer Olympics. The five rings on the Olympic flag stand for the five continents, that is, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America.
China later also took part in the Olympics. China’s first gold medal winner was Xu Haifeng, who won the shooting event in the 23rd Olympics. It is a great honor for us to have held the 2008 Olympics Questions are coming…..
