Publishers of books for beginning readers are busy doing whatever they can to make children
develop a love for reading. That means they爷ll produce the books that are more colourful and more
packed with pictures. But it turns out that when it comes to learning to read books, more pictures
aren爷t always good.
In fact, simply having more than one picture on a page can negatively affects the ability of
preschoolers to learn the words from that page, according to a new study by the researchers at the
University of Sussex. 野Storybook reading is a great activity to help children increase their
vocabulary,冶writes co-author Zoe M. Flack in the University爷s School of Psychology blog.
插图
But the illustrations ( 冤can affect how well children will learn new words. 野For example,冶
Flack writes,野we know that children can learn new words better if the illustrations are realistic.冶
Also, studies have shown that adding bells and whistles to storybooks may negatively affect learning,
according to Jessica S. Horst, Flack爷s co-author for the study.野We also know that children look
within illustrations for the things they hear in the story, so if the story mentions a girl dropping an
ice cream, children will look at the ice cream in the illustration.冶
With that in mind, Dr. Horst and Ms. Flack began to wonder what would happen when picture
books showed many illustrations on a page and how young children who hadn爷t yet learned to read
knew which illustrations to look at while listening to a story. To find out, they read the storybooks
that displayed either one or two illustrations per page to 36 three-year-old children. As it turned
out, children who listened to stories with only one illustration at a time learned twice as many words
as children who listened with two or more illustrations.
28. Why do publishers produce the books with many colourful pictures?
A. Because such books help kids improve their imagination.
B. Because parents are more interested in such books.
C. Because they want to help kids love reading.
D. Because such books are easier to produce.
29. What does Zoe M. Flack爷s words about storybook reading imply?
A. It can help kids learn new words.
B. Illustrations aren爷t that necessary.
C. More words should be added to a story.
D. It helps kids improve their reading ability.

A. Reading is a very important activity.
B. Children know what books they should read.
C. Children don爷t really love looking at illustrations.
D. One page should have only one illustration for kids.
31. According to the passage, the findings can help publishers ________ .
A. choose better stories for children B. produce more types of storybooks
C. produce better books for children D. make more money through producing books

Olympic Games in Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday released
itsproposaltomovethemarathonandlong–distanceracewalkingeventsfromTokyotoSapporo.
Sapporo officials are excited by the proposal. That was not the case in Tokyo, however.
Tokyo GovernorYuriko Koike wasn’t happy on Thursday. But she didn't disagree with the IOC’s
reasoningfor the change. The IOC wrote: “In Sapporo, temperatures duringthe Games periodare
asmuchasfivetosixdegreescentigradecoolerduringthedaythaninTokyo.”TheIOChopethat
thecoolertemperatureswillreduce“stress”ontherunners.
Olympic officials have acted because of results from the recent World Track and Field
Championships, held in Doha.In the Dohamarathonevents, a totalof 46 competitorswho started
the race were not able to finish. This happened even with the races being held at midnight, when
theweatherwascooler.Thetemperaturewasstill38degreesatthetime,however.
