Math
Holidays
Mole
Day
Mole
Day
is
celebrated
annually
on
Oct.
23
from
6:02
am
to
6:02
pm.
It
celebrates
Avogadro’s
Number
(approximately
),
which
is
a
basic
measuring
unit
in
chemistry.
The
first
Mole
Day
took
place
in
1991
and
has
been
honored
every
year
since.
The
concept
of
a
celebratory
day
was
created
by
Maurice
Oehler,
a
retired
high
school
chemistry
teacher.
It
aims
to
develop
interest
in
chemistry,
encouraging
schools
around
the
globe
to
celebrate
Mole
Day
with
various
activities
related
to
chemistry.
Fibonacci
Day
Nov.
23
marks
Fibonacci
Day,
a
special
day
that
celebrates
the
man
known
as
Leonardo
Fibonacci
who
developed
a
mathematical
concept
called
the
Fibonacci
Sequence
(斐波那契数列),
in
which
every
number
is
the
sum
of
the
previous
two
numbers.
So,
for
example,
11/23
marks
the
day
because
1+1
equals
2,
and
then
1+2
equals
3
(the
date
being
the
23rd).
It
may
be
somewhat
difficult
to
grasp,
but
the
concept
is
not
entirely
theoretical.
Square
Root
Day
Square
Root
Day
is
a
holiday
that
occurs
when
the
month
and
day
are
square
roots
of
the
last
two
digits
of
the
year:
e.g.
2/2/2004
and
3/3/2009.
The
last
Square
Root
Day
was
4/4/2016
and
the
next
one
will
be
5/5/2025.
The
holiday
was
created
by
a
high
school
teacher
Ron
Gordon
in
Redwood
City,
California,
who
noticed
that
an
upcoming
date
(9/9/1981)
represented
a
square
root.
Pi
Day
The
granddaddy
of
mathematical
and
scientific
holidays,
however,
falls
every
year
on
Mar.
14.
The
date,
3/14,
represents
the
first
three
numerals
in
the
calculation
of
pi;
so
the
date
is
known
annually
as
Pi
Day.
Pi
Day
was
founded
in
1988
by
physicist
Larry
Shaw
working
at
the
Exploratorium
in
San
Francisco.
The
event
featured
the
eating
of
various
pies,
tossing
pizza
pie
dough
and
parades
and
speeches.
21.
Which
holiday
is
linked
to
Avogadro’s
Number?
A.
Pi
Day.
B.
Mole
Day.
C.
Fibonacci
Day.
D.
Square
Root
Day.
22.
Which
of
the
following
dates
is
a
Square
Root
Day?
A.
Oct.23,
2020.
B.
Nov.23,
2021.
C.
Mar.14,
2030.
D.
Jun.6,
2036.
23.
Who
was
the
first
man
to
celebrate
Pi
Day?
A.
Larry
Shaw.
B.
Ron
Gordon.
C.
Maurice

When
LeeAnn
Kriegh
moved
to
Bend,
Oregon,
in
2012,
she
fell
in
love
with
the
trees,
birds
and
flowers.
Then
she
began
to
read
nature
guidebooks
but
wasn’t
satisfied
with
what
she
found
in
local
bookstores.
“There
wasn’t
a
book
that
met
my
needs,”
Kriegh
said.
“I
had
all
the
field
guides.
And
they
were
wonderful,
but
they
didn’t
tell
me
stories
or
teach
me
the
basics
and
that’s
what
I
needed.”
Kriegh’s
book,
The
Nature
of
Bend,
which
was
published
in2016,
makes
her
one
of
about
40
Central
Oregon
authors.
And
Kriegh
wants
to
encourage
others
to
become
published
authors.
She
spent
about
2,000
hours
working
on
her
guidebook,
in
which
she
covered
350
species
(物种).
“You
should
be
ready
to
spend
time
on
the
topic
you
write
about,”
Kriegh
said,
“It’s
a
lot
of
work,
and
you
have
to
have
a
strong
liking
for
your
subject,”
she
said.
“Otherwise,
it’s
going
to
be
put
aside.”
At
first,
Kriegh
began
by
sending
a
plan
to
a
book
publisher.
Half
a
year
passed
before
the
publisher
said
no
to
Kriegh.
Central
Oregon
seemed
too
small
a
market,
she
remembered
what
they
said.
During
that
time
she
made
a
decision
that
she
would
take
care
of
all
the
book’s
elements
(元素)
on
her
own
rather
than
depend
on
another
publisher.
Being
a
self-publisher,
she
not
only
picked
up
the
check
for
printing,
but
she
also
paid
for
the
other
parts
like
marketing
that
are
paid
by
a
publisher.
Kriegh
worked
with
more
than
40
photographers
and
local
naturalists,
and
read
through
many
scientific
papers
for
the
book.
She’s
heard
a
lot
of
positive
remarks
(评价)
about
the
way
she’s
shown
facts
and
stories
about
these
species
that
“help
people
feel
connected
and
put
a
smile
on
their
faces.”
Kriegh
is
now
working
on
The
Nature
of
Portland,
a
similar
book
she
hopes
will
attract
people
in
cities.
“The
purpose
of
the
book
was
to
get
people
more
interested
in
nature,”
Kriegh
said.
“The
more
you
know
about
a
species,
the
more
you
care
about
them
and
work
to
take
care
of
them.”
24.
Why
was
Kriegh
unsatisfied
with
the
nature
guidebooks
she
found?
A.
They
were
too
expensive
for
her.
B.
They
didn’t
have
stories
or
basics.
C.
They
didn’t
cover
much
wildlife
in
Bend.
D.
They
couldn’t
provide
any
useful
information.
25.
What
might
inspire
Kriegh
to
continue
writing
books?
A.
Her
dream
of
becoming
an
author.
B.
Her
hope
of
being
successful.
C.
Her
interest
in
the
subject.
D.
Her
love
of
her
city.
26.
Why
did
Kriegh
publish
on
her
own?
A.
She
hoped
to
take
full
control
of
the
book.
B.
She
didn’t
have
money
to
pay
the
publisher.
C.
She
wanted
to
the
market
in
Oregon.
D.
She
wished
to
publish
the
book
as
soon
possible.
27.
What
do
people
think
of
The
Nature
of
Bend?
A.
It
calls
on
people
to
protect
wildlife.
B.
It
is
especially
proper
for
people
in
cities.
C.
It
makes
people
feel
connected
while
reading.
D.
It
encourages
people
to
be
creative
in
writing.

A
vaccine
(疫苗)
that
protects
against
one
of
the
main
common
cold
viruses
has
been
shown
to
be
safe
and
effective
in
a
clinical
trial
and
could
be
available
by
2024.
Respiratory
syncytial
virus
(RSV)
spreads
so
easily
that
more
than
90
per
cent
of
people
have
experienced
their
first
infection
(感染)
by
the
age
of
2.
It
usually
causes
cold-like
symptoms
but
can
lead
to
severe
illness
in
young
children
and
older
people.
All
around
the
world,
about
60,000
children
under
the
age
of
5
and
14,000
people
over
the
age
of
65
die
each
year
after
developing
the
virus.
Developing
vaccines
against
RSV
and
other
respiratory
viruses
has
been
difficult
because
the
respiratory
tract
(呼吸道)
is
a
surface
exposed
directly
to
the
outside
world,
says
Kirsten
Spann
at
the
Queensland
University
of
Technology
in
Australia.
“It’s
harder
for
antiviral
antibodies
(抗病毒抗体)
in
the
blood
to
reach
viruses
in
the
respiratory
tract,
or
even
know
they
are
there,
because
there
is
some
physical
separation,”
she
says.
In
recent
years,
however,
there
has
been
rapid
progress
in
finding
new
ways
to
improve
immunity
against
respiratory
viruses.
Several
RSV
vaccines
are
being
tested
in
clinical
trials,
including
one
made
by
German
company
Bavarian
Nordic.
Its
vaccine
is
designed
to
build
immunity
against
RSV
by
exposing
the
body
to
five
small
fragments
of
the
virus.
In
a
clinical
trial
involving
420
adults
aged
55
and
older,
a
single
injection
(注射)
of
the
vaccine
in
the
upper
arm
increased
the
levels
of
RSV-fighting
antibodies
inside
the
nose
by
three
times
and
caused
no
serious
side
effects.
This
immune
response
lasted
for
six
months—enough
to
cover
a
winter
cold
season—and
was
restored
with
a
booster
shot
at
12
months.
The
results
are
promising,
but
more
research
is
needed
to
see
if
the
immune
response
is
strong
enough
to
prevent
RSV
infections,
says
Spann.
Bavarian
Nordic
is
now
planning
a
bigger
clinical
trial
of
its
RSV
vaccine
that
is
scheduled
to
begin
in
2021
and
will
involve
more
than
12,000
adults.
If
the
results
are
positive,
the
company
hopes
to
make
the
vaccine
available
by
2024.
The
firm
plans
to
offer
the
vaccine
to
children
too,
but
not
until
it
has
passed
clinical
trials
involving
people
in
this
age
range.
28.
What
do
we
know
about
RSV?
A.
It
is
the
deadliest
cold
virus.
B.
It
is
a
newly
discovered
virus.
C.
It
takes
thousands
of
lives
every
year.
D.
It
mainly
puts
older
adults’
lives
at
risk.
29.
Which
word
can
best
describe
the
development
of
RSV
vaccines?
A.
Creative.
B.
Dangerous.
C.
Interesting.
D.
Challenging.
30.
What
was
one
feature
of
the
RSV
vaccine
developed
by
Bavarian
Nordic?
A.
It
had
no
human
subjects.
B.
It
had
no
serious
side
effects.
C.
The
immune
response
lasted
for
12
months.
D.
The
immune
response
could
prevent
RSV
infections.
31.
What
does
Bavarian
Nordic
plan
to
do
in
2021?
A.
Continue
its
clinical
trial.
B.
Offer
its
RSV
vaccines
to
children.
C.
Put
its
RSV
vaccines
on
the
market.
D.
Follow
the
420
adults
in
its
early
clinical
trial.

An
Oregon
witness
at
Hood
River
reported
watching
two
cigar-shaped
objects
that
stopped
and
hovered
(盘旋).
He
was
in
a
car
driven
by
her
mother
at
2:06
p.m.
on
July18,
2018.
The
witness
stated,
“I
was
in
the
passenger
seat.
My
mom
then
pointed
to
two
white
lines
in
the
sky.
They
were
far
off
and
too
big
to
be
an
airplane.
The
lines
were
surely
not
made
by
airplanes
because
there
was
no
tail
or
wings.
These
were
just
straight
white,
cigar-shaped
lines
in
the
sky.
They
appeared
to
be
headed
eastward
before
they
stopped
and
started
hovering.”
“While
I
was
thinking
about
what
the
cigar-like
objects
might
be,
I
did
forget
to
record.
After
a
while,
they
moved
northward,
disappearing
into
a
thundercloud
(雷雨云),
in
which
an
airplane
could
not
go.
Also,
I
noticed
the
two
objects
were
flying
very
close
to
each
other,
and
I
know
commercial
(商业的)
airliners
do
not
do
that.
The
way
that
the
objects
were
flying
was
as
if
they
were
formation
flying.”
The
witness
did
not
feel
like
the
objects
were
presenting
a
possible
danger
in
any
way.
“People
in
movies
tend
to
make
UFOs
seem
like
dangerous
things
that
come
to
the
Earth
to
kill
humans.
But
these
objects
only
appeared
to
be
looking
at
the
Earth
below.
I
was
not
frightened
by
these
objects,
and
I
was
left
with
many
questions
instead:
What
were
they
here
for?
Did
anyone
else
see
them?
And
why
had
they
come
to
the
earth?”
“When
my
mom
and
I
came
home
we
told
my
dad
and
brother
about
the
strange
event.
They
did
not
believe
us
though.
And
because
we
don’t
have
any
pictures
or
videos,
this
event
will
be
considered
as
another
product
of
human
imagination
or
a
joke.
Though
I
do
accept
that
not
everything
on
the
Internet
is
real,
I
know
what
I
saw.
The
UFOs
that
I
saw
were
real,”
said
the
witness.
32.
Which
of
the
following
correctly
describes
the
two
UFOs?
A.
They
kept
their
distance.
B.
They
flew
in
a
special
way.
C.
They
made
a
noise
like
thunder.
D.
They
were
half
the
size
of
airplanes.
33.
What
did
the
witness
think
of
the
UFOs?
A.
They
were
carrying
out
a
task.
B.
They
provided
ideas
for
movies.
C.
They
seemed
harmless
to
the
Earth.
D.
They
seemed
frightened
of
humans.
34.
How
did
the
witness
feel
about
the
UFOs?
A.
Afraid.
B.
Excited.
C.
Confused.

第二节
(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Parents
and
kids
alike
love
sports,
and
it
is
easy
to
get
caught
up
in
a
game
and
become
focused
on
winning.
36
When
children
and
teens
are
involved
in
sports,
they
are
also
able
to
learn
and
put
into
practice
values
that
will
stay
with
them
for
the
rest
of
their
lives.
37
Whether
your
team
wins
or
loses,
you
should
show
respect
for
the
effort
of
the
other
team.
If
the
other
team
wins,
accept
defeat,
acknowledge
their
abilities,
and
move
on.
If
your
team
wins,
you
shouldn’t
brag
(自吹自擂)—that’s
what
it
means
to
be
a
gracious
winner.
Sportsmanship
requires
that
players
never
cheat.
It
might
seem
easier
to
win
by
doing
things
in
a
different
way
like
cheating,
but
everyone
has
to
follow
the
rules
because
they
ensure
sports
can
be
played
in
an
organized
way.
Good
sportsmen
want
to
win
because
they
follow
the
rules
and
train
hard.
38
Cheating
is
not
acceptable.
In
youth
sports,
it
is
important
to
encourage
even
those
players
who
are
the
least
skilled
to
have
fun
playing
in
the
game.
Parents,
coaches,
and
even
other
players
have
an
important
role
in
allowing
less
talented
teammates
to
take
part.
39
Team
sports
work
best
when
each
individual
supports
the
team.
Praise
teammates
for
what
they
do
well
and
encourage
them
when
they
make
mistakes.
40
Parents
should
model
this
behavior
for
children
by
praising
them
for
specific
things
they
have
done
well,
even
if
they
made
a
mistake
or
may
not
have
played
as
well
as
hoped.
A.?Everyone
should
have
a
chance
to
play.
B.
It
is
very
important
to
respect
the
other
team.
C.
Avoid
complaint,
argument,
and
unkind
actions.
D.
Respect
the
decisions
of
referees
and
other
officials.
E.
Yet
there
is
much
more
to
be
gained
than
a
winning
record.
F.
Good
sportsmanship
may
seem
hard
to
explain
with
one
sentence.
G.
Never
support
any
effort
to
win
that
attempts
to
go
around
the
rules.

Whitson

They
just
did
what
was
right
in
their
heart,

took

第二节
故事续写(满分20分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
On
a
hot
summer
day,
a
twelve-year-old
boy,
Gary,
rushed
to
change
his
clothes
after
finishing
practicing
at
a
baseball
camp.
He
couldn’t
wait
to
see
the
horses.
He
was
quite
proud
that
he
found
a
job
on
his
own.
He
saved
all
of
his
money,
hoping
his
dad
would
allow
him
to
have
a
horse.
Gary
thought
this
should
be
enough
to
prove
that
he’s
able
to
take
care
of
a
horse,
and
as
a
bonus
(意外收获),
he
said,
“I
can
pay
for
the
horse
out
of
my
own
money,”
How
could
his
dad
say
no
to
a
win-win
situation?
Gary
finished
tying
his
dirty
tennis
shoes
and
ran
all
the
way
to
the
stables
(马厩).
He
waved
to
everyone
and
shouted,
“Hello.”
and
began
cleaning
out
the
stalls
(畜栏).
As
he
finished
his
chores,
he
said
goodbye
to
each
horse
and
approached
his
boss,
Mr.
Bryant.
Gary
asked,
“Can
I
have
my
last
paycheck,
sir?”
Mr.
Bryant
took
out
the
checks
from
his
shirt
pocket
and
then
handed
him
his
checks.
He
shook
Gray’s
small
hand
and
said,
“Good
work.
Will
you
be
back
next
summer?”
Mr.
Bryant
smiled
when
Gray
nodded
and
raced
off
to
meet
his
parents.
He
quickly
took
off
his
clothes
and
put
them
in
the
worn,
brown
suitcase.
He
sat
in
the
doorway
and
patiently
waited
for
his
parents’
arrival.
He
saw
their
black
car
turning
the
corner
and
jumped
up
waving
excitedly.
